I loved watching Derek Warwick race. He was a great driver. Basically due to bad luck (with regard to the form the teams he raced in were going thru, eg Renault) his success wasnt higher.-daz in oz
how ever being derrick warrick he gets right out of the car looks for a gap in traffic to get off track and gets back in the spare the man is truely unbeliveable.
to give you an insight into the force of that off the side of his car that scrapes along the ground get's so hot that it actually set's alight.
so thats a minimum of some 600 degrees reached in the space of some 4 seconds of friction. The engine cover also probably saved his life because you clearly see that the car is scrapping along basicly on the back wheel and engine cover. which is maybe a couple of inches from the guys head and without which he would have made that slide fully upsidedown.
Remember the crash he just got out of the car and ran back to the pits and jumped into the spare car. The eurosport commetator said "he wants to go motor racing " when he was running back. Derek is one tuff dude.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't this at the end of the first round, and because the race was stopped (to clear the track) within the first three rounds a complete new start of the race was made, and Derek Warwick did start in the reserve car then?
@ulie1960 The rule in F1 is that if a race is stopped in Laps 1-3, the race is "wiped off" and the spare car (now illegal; a spare tub would have to be entirely built within 15 minutes) could be used. No such luck if the incident takes place on Lap 4 or further. To prevent this the full-course caution is generally used unless it is a severe crash or they run four laps and then pull the red flag.
Era la Lotus??
