Atheists mostly follow the theory of evolution because it is the most relevant and likely AT THE MOMENT based on how everything works. There are still things that aren't understood by scientists and they don't just make random guesses. They make educated guesses based on empirical evidence. A theist simply blames god and then tries to find proof. Some sort of higher power IS possible but it is definitely not the god of any holy book.

I think you'l find scientists change their mind - the earth was flat, no its round, no its elipszoid etc..
And actually they have to fill in alot of blanks (unknown).
They recently found super black holes - which has shattered their understanding of the origins of the earth and solar systems etc..
In the same way as a Christian I have many answers, but also many unanswered questions too.
If you believe there is a G-d then why not ask him, to reveal who he is?

Science is natural observation. It's how much we know. We'll never know everything. At the time they thought the earth was flat because that's only as much as they knew. It is the quest for knowledge. Religion goes against that quest and says that God is the reason for everything. Either believe there is a god that loves you and cares for you, or accept you are insignificant, when you die you're dead, and that you don't know everything. The truth hurts. You're obviously too weak for it.

Religion doesn't go against science - Michael Faraday, Isaac Newton, Louis Pastuer, Lord Kelvin - were all christian pioneers in science. And Einstein (believed strongly in a God).
I used to be athiest/ or agnostic like you, but have seen the light and have a relationship with my maker now - he's very real and as you say loving.
