I watched this hoping to find out if Kingston was a good brand of RAM to stick in my computer but you said nothing about it... Is it just as good as the Mac's RAM?
Do you find that the fan noise becomes very noticeable when editing video or working in a DAW? I ask because you mentioned using both Logic and FCP. I'm looking into a new, quiet, secondary Mac and the 2011 iMacs interest me most.
Hey was just wondering if you could mismatch ram. i have a mid 2010 imac 27 i7 and it came with 4gb standard (2x2gb) and i was wanting to buy more ram, another 8gb (2x4gb), is it okay to install the two 4gb with the two 2gb for a total of 12gb or do the four ram slots have to be filled with the same amount of ram, either all 2gb or all 4gb. thanks
currently using a 2010 macbook pro 13 2.4, thinking of upgrading, should i go for a 27 i5 6970 iMac or the 21.5 6770 iMac, or should i wait and get the 2012 ivy bridge macbook pro?
i just want to know if it will make applications lag less? because when i run FCPX and i am working on a huge project it lags like no other will upgrading my RAM help this?
Actually i just bought my iMac (2011 model, 3.4ghz i7) a couple of days ago and was able to find RAM (Model KTA-MB1333/4G) on amazon.com for a really good price. Free shipping for purchases over $25 and it was sold by Amazon.com. I paid $126 for 16GB made by Kingston which is a reputable company. Thanks and your welcome :)
I need more RAM for my computer. My Mac came with 2 gigs, and with a few fullscreen apps open, my tabs need to start refreshing when i leave them alone for a long time. But DDR3 ram is pretty expensive.
@tldtoday I want to upgrade the hard drive to an ssd on my 2011 13" MacBook pro and I desperately need some help. Should I go with an intel 510 series, a Kingston, or an intel 320 series. thanks!
@legobrickfilms1 The new 2011 iMacs support 32gb. It is only upgradable to 16gb through Apple but through something like OWC, you can order and use 32gb though it will probably cost more than the iMac itself.
@Bullit163 they dont make 8gb modules for consumer desktops yet but yea sandy bridge does support 8gb sticks once theyre out....my sandy bridge system can so i bet mac sandy bridges can
I have 8GB on my 2011 MBP, and it runs Final Cut Pro, After Effects like a charm at the same time, i really don't think you are going to need i16 gigs of ram unless you throw something like Red Cine or something like that in the mix lol..
I almost died when you said. "to upgrade your ram to 16gigs it is 3-4 hundred." it is way cheeper to upgrade for pc anything well besides their win tablets from Dell. They cost just as much as my iPad.
@bfudge85 The price is EXACTLY the same to upgrade the RAM in a Mac or a PC, it's the exact same hardware. iMacs use laptop memory to save space, just like the other all-in-ones on the market.
@manbornsoldier I'm pretty sure he needs what he gets most of the time, like this. He's a musician too and edits a lot of audio and video, so this 16GB will surely be used. Not too long ago people were saying you'd never need 4GB of RAM, and Bill Gates famously said you'd never need more than 640KB (allegedly lol).
@TalesOfWar Have u ever asking him how many Macs he have at home?..He even bought the Apple Cinema Display for god sake..hahaha..all that macs he have at home not enough to do his own production? i bet u this year macbook air 2011, he will buy one..prove me im wrong..hahaha..
@manbornsoldier He likes Apple stuff. So what? He actually uses the stuff too, and he gets a lot of things just to show us. Don't be bitter because he can afford stuff you can't. Also the Apple Cinema Displays are great fir colour work thanks to the IPS panel.
@TalesOfWar So What? Soyabean. Bean What? Mr.Bean...I like Apple Stuff too, and i dont feel any bitter at all.. I can afford just like he did..i didnt say he is wrong in buying stuffs he wants or needs.. i just say my opinion..so dont get me wrong bro.. He make good unboxing videos thats for sure..
When you get your iMac does it come with four 1GB cards in each slot? If it does would it be possible to take two out and replace them with 4G making your total 10GB.
I use A LOT of FCP, Ps, Ai, Ae, and Lightroom so I will definitely will upgrading my RAM. One questions though: You say it's good for multitasking and not necessarily for speed, but will it make a difference in rendering and exporting in FCP? And will it make compressor convert the h.264 files faster?
@Enited Hmm, not really. Those are affected by CPU and (in some cases, if the software and hardware support it) GPU and the speed of your drive. RAM is just like giving it a "bigger desk" so to speak. It doesn't make you work "faster", you can just do more on it at the same time. You do notice it though, you can be sure of that lol.
@TalesOfWar awww, I see. Thanks! I wish I didn't have to spend hours on just converting movie files. So is there any way I can make my iMac run faster? Or should I just save up for the new models?
@Enited I think there's some USB device you can connect to your Mac that's a dedicated H.264 encoder, so it offloads the strain from the CPU (it might do it combined, not sure). Check the Apple Store website, I'm pretty sure they sell them on there.
@JW2010fool Get a MacBook Pro now, if you really want one. They wont be updated again until either the end of this year or some time next year. My guess is when the Ivy Bridge CPU's come out, which is panned for early 2012, so some time after that. I could very well be wrong, but they only updated them fairly recently so you should be safe from a "oh damn, I just got a new system and now another model is out" for some time lol.
@Vx2x2 Spend the extra money on the faster CPU, then buy the RAM after market. Apple tend to charge stupid amounts for RAM, so go with the standard amount that it comes with and upgrade it yourself. AppleCare is recommended too, but you can put off buying that until just before the 12 month warranty runs out (just don't forget!). If you buy you Mac directly from Apple they'll actually send you an email a couple of months before it expires to remind you to buy it, if you want it.
will it steed my gaming up? ive got the new imac 2011 27 inch 2.7ghz with 4 gb ram, if i went to 16 gb will i see improvement in gaming? like playing eve?
I'm curious when You will have only 100MB free. I have 4GB and after two days it's only 10MB free. Weird becouse I only listen to music via iTunes and use Safari, with occasional use iPhoto, iMovie.
I always see people upgrading to 16 GB. Isn't it possible to install just 12 GB of RAM, so that you don't have to remove the already installed 4 Gigs of RAM?
Awesome!! I'm running the 2010 MacBook Pro, so I'm topped at 8GB.. but the OS, really knows how to work with it! I use PhotoShop, AfterEffects, Encore and Final Cut Pro, on a near daily bases.. I love my mac!
Hey Jonathan! I dint know I you remember, but just a little while ago you helped me decide on a new 13" MBP. I'm going to buy an SSD and put it in myself to save money and get some more speed. But will that along with the stock 4gigs of RAM be sufficient if I mainly watch YouTube videos, play some N64 emulators and do some occasional photo editing? Thanks a lot for the help!
@thefuf99 Your MBP will be plenty sufficient for the things you want to do. I have 1GB of RAM on one of my computers, and I can watch YouTube videos fine. However, I have a MBP with 4GB RAM and it can easily play Portal 2 and watch 1080p YouTube videos in multiple windows with other things running in the background. No need to have more than 4GB of RAM unless your doing some more powerful things such as frequent hardcore photo editing along with After Effects and other intensive programs.
@Smeire1 Thanks a lot! I just wanted to know from someone of experience. My first computer I got was this crappy Dell laptop I'm using now, and wanted to make the most out of my first "true computer" :P
Hey, Jonathan! Quick question. Why didn't you just configure your iMac with 16 GB RAM to begin with? You must have bought it recently, so I'm just curious as to why you didn't configure it that way in the first place.
Great video! I know a lot of people, even computer teachers, that say more RAM significantly speeds up a computer, and I just wanna tell them the truth, but I don't wanna come across like a nerd, lol.
so i do a huge amount of cinema 4d editing, would more ram increase the time it takes to render, or if not what do i need to upgrade to get faster render speeds?
@xRBCSx Most probably shall still use all of it an still take a while, I mean it's for 3D modelling so maybe even more than after effects, 12 is still a pretty good amount though to run it, just you'll have to patient with some high end stuff and rendering times.
@xRBCSx Yeahh would be helpful, i mean don't get me wrong it'll still run and everything, but if your going to be using the program a lot, then more ram will make things much easier. You're welcome :)
@CharlieMcGoldrick i use the software everyday for about 2 - 3 hours, during the day im a work doing other modelling, thanks again, okay now time to see the best i ca get for £1400 for whole mac, thanks
@lysolcoke2HD If I used 1.5GB of RAM with ONE virtual instrument in Logic, How do you think multiple instruments, VSTs, plugins, ect aren't going to use more?

@Vx2x2 depends on what you use it for. i'd recommend apple care.
also depending on what you use it for you may not need 8gbs of ram (which would be cheaper to replace yourself at a later date).
also depends on which graphics card you think would best suit your needs.
remember ram can be upgraded later for cheaper and apple care can be bought up to a year after the purchase :)

Anyone on here can answer this for me, Does it void your Apple Care warranty if you install more RAM?
DeRockProductions 8 months ago
@DeRockProductions I have no idea, but I seriously doubt it.

You don't need special "Apple memory". Any DDR3 memory will work. :)

so i do a huge amount of cinema 4d editing, would more ram increase the time it takes to render, or if not what do i need to upgrade to get faster render speeds?
xRBCSx 8 months ago
@xRBCSx The number of cores (quad core, dual core) is what makes it faster. The more cores you have the more "render box things" you have.

upped mine to 12GB as soon as i received my unit. multiple apps do run smoother!

Nothing utilizes 16GB of RAM. Plus it costs $66 a stick. I could get 4GB DDR3 1600 for $20 less for a PC.
lysolcoke2HD 8 months ago
@lysolcoke2HD Dude adobe after effects eats up my 8GB of RAM, it would still eat up all 16GB easily.
CharlieMcGoldrick 8 months ago
@CharlieMcGoldrick As I said, ignore that. I was thinking in gamer terms and posted before I finished the video. Games only utilize just about 4GB.
lysolcoke2HD 8 months ago
@CharlieMcGoldrick what about cinema 4d? r12
xRBCSx 8 months ago
@xRBCSx Most probably shall still use all of it an still take a while, I mean it's for 3D modelling so maybe even more than after effects, 12 is still a pretty good amount though to run it, just you'll have to patient with some high end stuff and rendering times.
CharlieMcGoldrick 8 months ago
@CharlieMcGoldrick so i am curretly 4gb ram, so i should upgrade, thanks
xRBCSx 8 months ago
@xRBCSx Yeahh would be helpful, i mean don't get me wrong it'll still run and everything, but if your going to be using the program a lot, then more ram will make things much easier. You're welcome :)
CharlieMcGoldrick 8 months ago
@CharlieMcGoldrick i use the software everyday for about 2 - 3 hours, during the day im a work doing other modelling, thanks again, okay now time to see the best i ca get for £1400 for whole mac, thanks

@lysolcoke2HD If I used 1.5GB of RAM with ONE virtual instrument in Logic, How do you think multiple instruments, VSTs, plugins, ect aren't going to use more?
