I loved Farner and GFR's (early) music. But now Mark wants to be the new Engelbert Humperdinck. What a LOUSY song. WTF. This is what cheap did to him. Watch out Tom Jones
My dad grew up listening to GFR and got me listening to it. We saw Mark playing at Hippie Fest back in August here in San Diego. My dad has known him personally since 1988 and they're in contact. I am so lucky I got to meet Mark at the sound check before the show. He's such a nice guy. To him we're his friends more than his fans. My sister was born on Mark's birthday in 1989 and if she was a boy, my dad was going to name her Mark. lol I hope to see him again.
I listened to Grand Funk in junior high and high school. This is my all time favourite song of theirs. I saw them live in 1996 and again in 2003 and was very disappointed that they did not play this song at either concert. All of their songs were great and true to their 70s greatness. Not hearing Bad Time was disappointing.
@NickInDetroit Did a tour in Indy, about 1997 or so, and it wasn't an enormous venue, but big enough. We had great seats, I could feel my ribs shaking from the bass, they were doing all the other good ones, but in between songs, I was screaming at the top of my lungs "BAD TIME"!!!! They finally did it!! I would have been so disappointed like you!! I love this one!!!!!!!!!!!!1
i loved GFR but what the F*** is this song? How do u go from Heartbreaker, I'm Your Captain, I Can Feel in the Morning, etc.... to this freaking dreadful song?
"We became a commercialized band. We're coming to your town. We'll help you party it down coz we're a commercialized band."
This is definitely one of my all-time forever favorite songs. I have been searching for this and, at last, I found it. I loved this song immediately upon hearing it. It is just a super song. Everything about this just appeals to me...what can I say?! I LOVE THIS SONG. Thank you for this wonderful post.
Boy! When I was 17 this song hooked me and dragged me down every dirt road in town. For a band that became famous for its long versions, I always felt this song ended much too soon. Still do.
Haha, I saw Mark a few months ago. He explained about how he came to write this song. He told the story of his crazy ex wife and how she chased him with a butcher knife. I guess that would make it a bad time to be in love, huh?
Buenos tiempos aquellos.
That started me thinking about getting a Trans Am . . . as time went by, years and years later . . . I eventually owned a few of them . . . and still have a warm place in my heart for the venerable Buick GS -- the fastest muscle car of all time, enhanced in performance and fun by listening to Bad Time by Grand Funk Railroad.
While the song continued to play, I chased the two speeding cars, they were going over 100 mph in almost no time.
We slalomed through the Kettle Moraine area on the way to West Bend . . . .
The next day, I went to pick up my girlfriend Mary Jo Eberle from her job at the Northridge Mall. A co-worker needed a ride home and lived near me, so she rode along in the back of the Gran Sport.
Again, this song comes on the radio and we all liked it -- the co-worker said she would love a Trans Am!
I loved the song and when it came out I really enjoyed hearing it on the radio. I went down to the local shopping plaza, Capitol Court in Milwaukee, and bought a copy of the 45 rpm record.
One day as I was driving my '69 Buick GS, the song came on the radio, WOKY - The Mighty 92 AM, just as I was merging onto the expressway at the end of the ramp.
Suddenly, woosh - woosh! Two speeding Pontiac Trans Am cars zoomed past, one blue and the other one white!
@aimeemannfan2010 4 months after that day we broke up. The previous 9 months we always talked to each other every day if only just to say hi. The pain of not seeing or talking to her was hard. A week later I swallowed my pride and decided to call her. What was odd was when I reached for the phone, it rang and it was her and she was feeling the same feelings I was. There is a lodge in that state park . 6 years ago we watched our daughter get married there.
@cannine57 I got choked up reading your story--no joke. That is beautiful, man! Music is such a powerful, wonderful gift, and so much of it is interwoven in the thread of life. May you and your little family always be blessed!
This song reminds me of the day after prom in high school 1975. My girlfriend and I spent the day hiking in a state park. I was a getting ready to graduate with big plans of my own. Being with her was as close to heaven as it gets. Needless to say my plans changed. I'll never forget those beautiful green eyes, dark hair and that sweet voice.
My God I Love This Song!!!!!!!! Peaked at #4? i was there listening in 1975 and it should have been #1!!! maybe because its too short...should have been much longer!
@januarypeace YOU ARE SO RIGHT JANUARY MAN! WHAT THE HELL IS WITH THAT SHIT?! I MEAN, LOOK AT ALL THE DUFOUS' WHO GET CREDIT DAY IN DAY OUT IN THE MUSIC SCENE AND MARK IS ALL OUT IN THE COLD SIMPLY BECAUSE THE CRITICS HATED HIS SONGS...THE FANS SIMPLY DIDNT COUNT!
Here i am at my pc with my grandson whos 5 years old playing the drums with a couple of #2 pencils on my desk singing right along with grandpa..Is that cool or what. Just goes to show you a classic for all ages!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just can't put my finger on what exactly amazes me about this song. He sings "I'm in love" in four successive phrases of the song and each time the stress sounds different ... as if some clever rhythm progression is taking place. Then it culminates in the completion of a musical thought. I find it delightful every time, and wish I knew exactly what is going on.
I'm 56 years old and it's hard to believe so much time has passed since these songs were new.Do they sound just as good to young persons as they still do for us?What I still cannot get quite used to is that when these songs are currently taped being performed by the origional artists ,they're all old guys singing them. There was "THEN" and "NOW",and what happened in between seems to have never ocurred at all.Yeah...a long strange trip indeed !
@DANGITPEPE I'm half your age and loved this song from the first listen. It just sounds amazing. Music today just doesn't have this kind of feeling and emotion.
i cant listen to this song without listening 10 or 15 times in a row. wow memories and oh yea, dont play this song in front of any woman in yer life hahahahahahhaha
@gerkins1 There was also someone named Dede in my life; to say she was special is an understatement. While she was married and nothing ever happened between us, I'll never forget her. There's never been anyone like her, before or since.

Wow what a GREAT SONG!!!!! Brings back lots of fond memories....how come todays music doesn't have bands like Grand Funk anymore???. Mark Farner is the MAN!!!
I had a girlfriend who loved this song back in 75 or so....I was a GFR snob and would only listen to their early stuff, i.e. "Inside Lookin Out" etc....then I fell in love with her....she should have been the poster child of girls of the 70's.....god I love this song!!

@hants21 -- We had a DJ once who (morning show, no less) played "Funk #49" twice in a row. After the first play, he said, "I just gotta play that record again!" (This was when "Funk #49" was a brand new song.)
@2009Denisem First time i have heard this, but wow i do love this, love the lyrics as well, terrific post Jmoore75860, and thank you Denise for sharing this hidden gem.
I don't like today's music but then i was livin in the G.f.R. era so i don't understand what kids see in rap and other stuff thats bin done today, but music crosses all barriers so i say rok on
I was in my early 20's then wen i think back if we as young adults wood have looked at the big picture things wood have bin totallt different we never listen to our parents or for that matter anyone who has bin thru live every generation is basically the same, take it from a old man and try to look down the road 20 yrs things have a tendacy to work themselves out.
wow...ill be 49 in october and when i was younger (in the army overseas) i listened to GFR and i didnt recall this song til one day playing on you tube i came across this song...what a great song and its easy to follow...anyway my gf heard me playing this song and of course gave me a ribbing saying "you picked a bad time to believe in love huh" lol...ya see, were getting married in sept...i told her no that i just like the song lol
A classic, a great band, What has happened to music??? What has happened to "real talent" ??? It seems they allow anybody in recording studios these days...it's sad.
I seem to be alone in this, but this is my favorite song by GFR. I was about 10 years old when I got "All the girls in the world beware" album and this song was the soundtrack of my life back then.
una cancion unica en su genero que me trae nostalgias del pasado, alegrias en el presente y seguramente q en el futuro me seguira haciendo sentir cosquillas enel estomago al escucharla...lo maximo.hoten33
@50Emerald I know the feeling50EM, riding hard on 59...The music we had does hold up, sad to fall in love with the rubbish I hear banging out of cars at a stoplight.
Wow this must be the reunion site for 48-year-olds ... I'm in lol!!, I ran across this and had to listen to it, brings back a little of that first real heartache...Joyce - hope she's doing well!
@Jmoore75860 Grand Funk were one of the Biggest bands of the day and consequently had millions of fans back then. This was their Last chart topping song and album though.

This song has it all: Tremendous vocal, outstanding guitar riffs, and a mesage that is universal. It hits dead-on. Keep rap, gimme rock!

Why can't we have this type of music dominating the airways instead of the "CRAP" played now? BABY BOOMER MUSIC ROCKS FOREVER!!
