I have been a hardcore supporter of BJP from my college days.Sometimes I feel they are no different then congress or any other party for the matter, their economic policies, Agrarian policies are all same.Can any one tell me how its different (better ) than congress,I expect mature concrete answers with numbers and no theisis on BJP being a nationalist party .
Since u seem to be asking the question genuinely, I will answer you. BJP believes in cultural nationalism, which is also called Hindu nationalism. Nationalism generated by culture. Nationalism > Secularism or any other ism. So they call secularists as pseudo secularists, because according to them, there is ample proof that secularism leads to Muslim appeasement, which, according to them, is why India was partitioned in 1947.
Further, they believe that India is only secular because it is a Hindu majority country, a fact proven by the fact that neither Pakistan or Bangladesh are secular countries. In fact there is Muslim majority country in this world which is secular. And for secularism in India, India must be retain its Hindu identity, (therefore all this Ram Mandir, etc.)
Its hard to measure their success vs Congress, because they have been in power only for 6 years vs Congress's 55 years.
And so their profile in modern India is that of a Right wing party, like the Republicans in America.
They are generally identified as being tough on terrorism, believe in fighting brick with stone, believe in strong national defence, are hawks on Pakistan. They are associated with colour "saffron".
They exploded nuclear weapons in 1998, defeated Pak in Kargil and shot down a Pak navy plane over Kutch and launched the biggest highway program in India's history during their reign.
So their overall guiding principle is the prevention of Islamisation of India at all costs, creating a powerful Hindu nation, with a Hindu way of life, which, according to them will automatically be secular, as, according to them, Hinduism is a far more universal belief system than Islam.
That's their main difference with Congress.

What we need is an amalgamation of all religions by accepting good practices from all and weeding out the bad ones. For example the divorce laws of Christianity are desirable for Hindus. Hindus shun multiple marriages by the Muslims but their own God Ram's father had three wives. On the other hand it is said that Islamic women are not treated equally as their men. What we need is a society based on family values, equality of sex and equal opportunity to all without looking at one's face.
National causes and action plan are to be discussed and agreed upon by all. This can be done only if the poliitical parties rise above their own minor agendas and see the whole picture and draft the way forward. If they don't then the repurcussions can be beyond control. Kashmir is a ploy by Pakistan to divert attention of India from the burgeoning Muslim Population inside India. Naive politicians, who cannot see beyond their own present well being are trapped by the vote bank politiics.
BJP has to reinvent themselves. BJP is branded as a divisive force whereas the Congress is regarded as the unifying force of the nation. Which one is correct? Those apparent may unfortunately not be true. But let both become unifying forces rather than the Congress and others trying to demolish the BJP. Demographic changes have become significant. This should not precipitate a civil war. Therefore these parties have to identify the way to go ahead and support each other in the right causes
