Only on occasion does the human race do anything good. and Carl Sagan spent 60 minutes on this idea on E13 "Who Speaks For Earth?" in the TV series Cosmos. If the world did actually end on 12/12/2012, I'd be happy to die on that day. But I would also see 7 billion human beings go the same way as me. And to see the shock on their faces about it. They thought their lives and their world were perfect but in the end that saw otherwise.

I can't say that I agree, but according to Erich Fromm, one of the main ways in which people avoid their freedom is through the destruction of others.
