Awesome song, but am I wrong in thinking that the line sung just once - "I believe when i fall in love THIS TIME it'll be forever" gives this song a slightly jaded tone? I'm sure I can hear "with you" in the background vocals at the same time, and to me it suggests a barely whispered hope that maybe this time it might not die.
Of course, the funky bit at the end might blow my theory out the water... but still, whaddya think?
For what I can see this is a song about mature love, not about total surrender, but proceeding cautiously but in good faith and with a hopeful heart; and is all the better, and more true for it.
@Ainocorrida81 Yours sounds like a perfectly valid reading of the song; my understanding of it was similarly uplifting for most of the time I've known it.
My point was simply that the words "this time" alter the meaning by suggesting that the author has felt in the past that his love was eternal but it turned out not to be, and he hopes that maybe *this time* the love will be forever.
@tecciztucatl What I've always found odd about this song is that he speaks of falling in love in the future tense, as something that hasn't happened yet but that inevitably will. Is it possible to know that you'll soon be in love without already being in love?
i was just watching high fidelity and it prompted me to look this song up. its one of my all time " top " films and this song is a credit to the ending
Not many people understand me when I say that I want to dance with my husband to this song at my wedding. And to be whimsical, "God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys. Mostly because I'm only 17, and people my age have no musical taste. But this is definitely my favorite Stevie song. <3
i need help. i'm starting to have a collection of the greatest of all time. stevie wonder is obviously on my list. i bought songs in the key of life. and i was thinking to buy his greatest collection. but i don't know anymore. should i buy all his albums?. but that's really expensive for a 14 year old girl. what should i do?
@Svartermetalisk High Fidelity is one of the greatest films of all time, as well as having one of the greatest soundtracks of any film in existence. The Big Lebowski is the only other film to hold the same achievements to such high standards.
@DankFlyer -- I might respectfully add Walk the Line, among recent films that capture the heart of music so authentically (in this case, that of Johnny Cash). T-Bone Burnett did an incredible job producing the music on that film.
Wonderful song - many years ago an Australian singer Colleen Hewett recorded this song and it's a wonderful version if you can ever hear it. Love this too of course.
@queenslanddiva I'm an American and I love Colleen's dreamin my dreams with you. How can I find her version of this song if at all possible? I could hear her tearing this song up.
@shahbahranks Hi, sorry I can't help you with the Colleen Hewett recordings. I did find one on Australian ebay recently though, you could try that. Glad you enjoy her - she has a great voice. All the best.
high fidelity turned me on to this song, too! had to go research it once i heard it during credits. i wrote it down on my wedding wishlist immediately. :)
this is stevie it his best. a dreamy love lyric. this man can touch your very soul with his writing and singing. God has truly blessed this man with a langage that is universal---------------------LOVE. i love you stevie wonder, and thanks for sharing your beautiful gift with the world. peace out.
@Finleykj I always liked the song...but then it was used to such great effect at the end of "High Fidelity" that I totally fell in love with it. What a beautiful piece of music.
As I hear it, it's about a perfect girl he hasn't met yet. A perfect love not yet found. But then I could be wrong. Still makes my eye wet though.

@perfectsoundzforever That's a good point, it is a bit weird to think about a partner like that.
