  • As a postscript - cable chutes can be made to fly a lot better by making the hole in the middle a big bigger, stops the 'kiting' effect. I once made one with six panels, 2m in diameter, 1m hole in the middle, almost a skirt! The launch loads were taken by a piece of winch cable through the parachute, same length as the 'collapsed' assembly. 10m strop to weak link. It opened with a pop!! Flew dead straight at any speed, but was a bit fragile compared to the wire fence around the field....

  • Very interesting! I've done 15,000 launches as a winch driver, launching the larger gliders. The flying parachute concerns me a little..... a better solution is one that is collapsed by tension through the line. And fitted with a much longer strop to the glider! I only mention this because of a fatal accident with a parachute carrying the steel launch cable over the wing.... not pleasant. Not on my watch though.

  • ...during that first tow, pilot swung his legs about...oscillated a bit...but good to

avoid having that nose high in case of a weak link break or winch failure...

don't want to stall if bar is in a 'pushed out' position...good to get simulator

    practice on ground first.

  • This footage is from three years ago. We use our winch every week. January tows so far=150

  • Wow, very nice Winch! Is this newly taken footage?
