can you do a nice DOF on a face from a fiew feet away. in other words, can you blur the background if your subject is still a bit far from the lens? or does it basically have to be a closeup?

Really in this this shot there is a fairly shallow depth of field because it is low light and the aperture on the camera is open wide. That results in a shallow DOF. The more light, the less DOF. Really camcorders such as this don't have a shallow DOF. It has to do with their small ccd lens. So basically to get shallow DOF with this, it has to be low light.
