@The808Prophet Ha that's probably more because the label this version was released on is less assholish about their stuff being upped on youtube, and I bet if the first upload of the Remix version was still uploaded and not removed for copyright reasons, it would have more views than this. Also, view counts is not a quantifier of quality. But I agree, this version is better :)
can anyone recommend a track similar to this. i like it because the backing beat is a feel good dance/funky beat , the rapping is full of loose james brown style improvised energy.... i need more
Back when this came out my understanding was that Brand New Heavies was a group of musicians that would play the music to popular hip-hop songs while the song's usual rappers would do the vocals. I always thought this version was Pharcyde rapping with Brand New Heavies playing the instruments. That was the appeal of Brand New Heavies - they did stuff everybody already liked, but they weren't a turntable or synthesizer.
When this music came out.....it was just like yesterday to me. It's been a while since I listened their music last time, but it's amazingly still so fresh. Their music just poped in my head all of sudden without any reason... I love their music!
this one is the original, fat lips in it cus this is their first realease and when they came out with the remix he had already left the group which is why he aint in that one. it says brand new but that shit came out in 92
This is the brand new heavies version! It says it right there fool. The original had the beginning with zig zags instead its replaced by a quick verse on this version. I like this better than the original
I wrote the description and uploaded this video myself, so I know it's the Brand New Heavies version... "Brand New Heavies" is the band's name though, it doesn't mean the album or music is "brand new" fool. A quick look at the Pharcyde's debut album will show you that it is a remix on there. This is the original version of Soul Flower, performed with the Brand New Heavies. Look at zero4347's comment above for more info. And I like this version better too :)
Exactly its the bands name is the Brand new heavies, and this is their remix. not the pharcydes. It's hard to believe what zero says because I cant find that info out on the net anywhere. Whatever though. Meanwhile Ive found evidence that supports what I'm saying but who cares.
The song didn't exist before Pharcyde got together with The Brand New Heavies and wrote this song. Since it didn't exist before they got together to write it, how can it be a remix??? lol.
@niallz -- sorry dude but Agenda1988 is right, this is the original version. The Album "Heavy Rhyme Experience" was a collaboration between The Brand New Heavies, a London-based rare-groove/acid-jazz band, including Gang Starr, Jamalski, Kool G Rap, and others -- such as Pharcyde.. BNH provided the music for each track while the rap artists provided the vocals. Each track was original to the album, including this one. The Pharcyde-only version was recorded and released AFTER this version.
exactly. plus IIRC this was the kick off to the likes of the heavies and Ndea davenport having such a strong showing on Gurus early Jazzmatazz series (ntm other Acid Jazz faves like Carleen Anderson, JTQ and Shara Nelson)
It remains a fucking epic old school album to this day. Love it.
@Matty73 -- Actually this was the second Brand New Heavies album, the first being their self-titled album. N'Dea Davenport didn't show up until the third album, "Brother/Sister." But yeah, these albums all came out within 2 or 3 years of each other in the early 1990s. These cats along with Jamiroquai (before they turned into a fag-disco band) absolutely ruled the 1990s nuovo-funk-jazz scene.
@DroverChicago -- E'Dea was actually singing for that band way before that Brother/Sister album out in 94 tho.
I remember watching the video of Never Stop (she's on the video too) on VH1 on the summer of 91 and I believe the success of that particular song made the band (or their label?) decide to re-record their 1st album that features her on the whole album-level for their US debut album cos their original album released in UK the previous year (90?) only featured her just few songs.
@niallz -- in fact, come to think of it -- not only is this the original version of this song, this is the first EVER Pharcyde song released by a record label. In other words, this version of this song was the first thing the world outside of L.A. ever heard from The Pharcyde. Can't get much more original than that.
@niallz The version on The Pharcyde's album is the remix, this is the original version where The Pharcyde collaborated with The Brand New Heavies. Basically, they rapped over live instrumentation provided by TBNH, and then it was later remixed for a track on The Pharcyde's debut album.
@niallz Notice how what you refer to as the "original" has samples from the instruments in this, and there's a lot of addition post-performance editing, while this one is clearly performed with an actual band with very little post-processing. This is the original, as it came out on The Brand New Heavies album before The Pharcyde released their debut album with their remix of it.
@Agenda1988 I don't have the Brand New Heavies album, but I can vouch for the fact that the track on The Pharcyde's first album is specifically titled "remix", and this is clearly the unaltered original. Both are good, although I like this one a little better just because it keeps it chill and funky throughout, the remix is a little bit noisier.
lets just agree that they're both as good as each other, without the original there would be no remix. i do think the remix has a better beat but they both classic. enjoy real hip hop !!

for sure. My mix up on the time scale.
My other [big] favourites were Galliano but i get the impression they were only really popular in the UK?
"fag disco". Fine term, lol. :)
Matty73 in reply to DroverChicago (Show the comment) 1 year ago
@Matty73-Galliano was (kind of popular) here in Tokyo too.
Even though I don't know whether I can say
they were popular throughout the country or not,
Acid Jazz movement? from UK was a pretty big thing in Tokyo at that time also.

@DroverChicago-Thanks for backing it up!!
Other than that point (N'dea didn't show up until BNH's 3rd),
I pretty much agree with what you've previously mentioned though.
Had never heard of the group called Pharcyde before, but this song was dope enough for me to remember their name & expect their own album.
And although I never really liked the remix version that much, their 1st album was definitely a classic that time!!
