Cool! I just started my six tomato plants about 3 weeks ago indoors, they are looking good but wondering... If I trim a tomato plant in a certain way will it make more tomatoes/flowers?
@unapez Potentially, it is possible, but you need to remember that more fruits on the plant at the same time the smaller they will be. And plant will regulate itself any way, which means that at some point it will start to abort flowers. Of course, plants will need enough light, water, nutrients to support high number of fruits. More side shoots will give you more flowers, but for the plant to produce longer, it needs a balance.
@nottinmatterz2day this plant are in rockwool bags which are charged with nutritional solution and they receive water with nutrient every day. They are hydroponic tomatoes
Your garden really looks amazing and greenhouse is successful for farmers.I was planning to go with hydroponics method but somehow i came to your video.
hi plant doctor.. i would like 2 setup a hydroponic tomatoes and bell peppers green house.. would u please help me on the setup.. telling me about the medium and the nutrients that u use for the plans... thnx :)
@akkiinc I have a good book for sale where you can find all the info you need for growing greenhouse vegies. If you are interested, contact me through my site greenhouse-vegetables . com . Very soon it will be available on my site as well
Do you ever "flush" the tomatoes before you pick them? By this I mean using a final solution or plain water to remove the nutrients from the roots before consumptions.
@rach777able Genetics would have a bigger effect on sweetness. Also the ripeness will effect as well. When beefsteak tomatoes are picked they are not completely ripe, so they will not be as sweet as ripe ones. I know from tomato breeders that it is very difficult to make a variety that will give large fruits, high production and sweet fruit at the same time. But they are working very hard on that. More potassium can make fruits sweeter, but if it is not in genetics than you won't get it.
GMO pushes aside natural species, is uncontrollable as it can be eaten by other animals that suffer dare consequences (illness and death). A farmer that uses these seeds are slaves for the producer and can not easily switch (due to soil degradation). The seed producer does not take any legal responsibility for the risks the crop will pose, so the farmer is on his own in case there are some soil degradation, species dilution (organic farms), livestock / natural animal killings etc.+ lots more
@Bobster986 These are NOT GMO tomatoes. They are specially selected hybrids. This is a huge difference. And Canada does not allow to grow GMO greenhouse vegetables.
@ThePlantDoctor1 I'm in agreeance. Several GmO crops are modified with things that we already eat, such as natural antifreeze from fish in our oceans. If gmo has gotten a bad name, it is due to corporations who patent gmo mods in plants and do not allow for heirlooming. And for those who speak of "spider dna" you will not grow 8 legs and poison glands from eating a spider or ten thousand spiders let alone a tiny fragment of it's dna merged into tomato dna. :) relax
@marito001 The leaves can curl, because it can be too much of sunlight or low humidity, or both, or your variety is sensitive to these factors. Try to give them little bit of shade between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. and see how they react. It might be OK, as long as you don't see fruit damage(burn) or wilting.
Thanks for you nice video. Your tomatoes look good. We bought an old greenhouse set up for tomatoes but in the wrong way, so you can't lower them. We have 3000 plants in it at the moment. Last week a storm wrecked our plastic cover and we don't have money to fix it. Could we just grow them without cover? We're in Australia and bees are not allowed here. We have a water recycling system, and we have lots of disease problems. I wished my tomatoes looked as good as yours! Keep up the good work.
@Friederike42 Of course, you can grow them without a cover like a field tomato. And you don't have to have bees. You can pollinate mechanically, shaking plants. If you have recycling system, you need disinfection system connected to it. Ozone, heat or UV. Or lots of pesticides that I don't prefer. Thanks for commenting.
I LOVE tomatoes, I will eat them fresh off the vine, like an apple, lol. they're best when they are home grown, and still warm from the sun. I'm growing 5 different breeds in my back yard this year. Next year, I will be growing all heirloom breeds, different colors and sizes. Thank you for the tips. What are you growing the room system in? A bag of potting soil?
I grow tomatoes indoors all the time and never use insects. I rely on vibration from oscillating fans to set fruit and I have a near 100% germination rate on tomato flowers. How do bees get the pollen out of your flowers...I thought all tomato stamens were closed?
@GrowsmartHydroponics Yes, you are correct. Vibration is one of the methods to pollinate tomatoes. But when we grow them in 3,5, or 11 acres blocks, it is very time consuming (you would have to do it by hand with sticks shacking support wires). So, bumble bees are much cheaper option.
@GrowsmartHydroponics Also when bees pollinate flower they get the pollen the same ways you get that pollen out of flowers with vibration. They vibrate flowers with their wings and you would be surprised how much pollen they carry on their legs sometimes. They are very smart creatures.
They look great. Do they self pollinate? It looks like great care is taken on each plant to support it properly. It must take lots of labor. Nice video.
@SleestaksRule Thanks for your comment. No, this plants require pollination. For this purpose we use bumble bees. One of my videos shows how I release bees in the pepper greenhouse. The same we do in tomatoes, but every week. We have to introduce bees in tomatoes constantly from the time they start blooming.
@SickByBirth How many J-Hooks do you need? Where are you located? You can contact me also through my website greenhouse-vegetables . com

is the soil reuseable?

@woodrowpass we grow tomatoes in rockwool bags and they can be reusable if you have a system to sterilize them.

@ThePlantDoctor1 What is wrong with geneticly modifies crops? There is no evidence that says for definite that they can harm humans.
They are the solution to humanities food problems in the future, just remember that selective breeding is near enough GM.

@GardenCalifornia It is a plastic greenhouse. And we use rockwool slabs for our tomatoes. Some growers use coconut fiber bags.
