it's not that this excerpt is taken too quickly - it's that way too many liberties are taken with the tempo at inappropriate times. you have a nice sound and obviously great technique, but this probably wouldn't hold up in an orchestral audition. unfortunately, uniqueness isn't generally valued in those environments.
@musicactually Agreed - I play it much straighter in auditions. Fortunately, when I've played it with orchestras and bands , the conductors have been great about following my phrasing decisions!
Thank you for both a beautiful performance AS WELL AS standing behind your own music. You're the essence of a musician, for the music's all that matters!
This is very good! Is it OK to do the tempo changes though? I mean, is it allowed, especially for college auditions? I like it very much, but I don't know what judges would say.
echo-ey rooms are for people who don't have good tone. Yours however is very robust! i wish i could hear your sound a little better. Great playing though!
Your amazing!!!!! I really love your playing and your style. I have a long way to get as good as you, i have some videos of me playing flute on my channel. check them out if you like :)
i was wondering if you ever had to audition on this excerpt? because most recordings i've heard are at 8th note=76 to 90(rare) i know the music is marked 126-132; have the auditors ever gave feedback about the tempo?
I have played this excerpt in quite a few auditions, and I have only received positive feedback in the regard to the tempo. Personally, I find the slower interpretations excruciatingly boring! The theme of the movement needs motion, and I think it's unfair for conductors to slow down the whole movement for the "comfort" of the principal flutist!
I don't know what Hindemith was thinking makring this sucker at 126. This must be around 112 and it still sounds insane (though you've managed it well), so I can only imagine...
What Bernstein recording recording are you speaking of? I'd like to find it.

thanks for the advice!
i played it at around your tempo, albeit with alot more wrong notes =p, but i still won the audition! this video helped me alot

Wow! fantastic!! You have a beautiful sound and brilliant control.
My only suggestion would be to do more with dynamics. Adding more crescendos and decrescendos will naturally give it much more movement.
But really, great playing!
