I'll give you a comparrison: Eric Clapton and Yingwie Malmstein. Malmsteen is a guy who it can be said is technically brilliant, plays a billion notes a second. Those guitar runs end up sounding like static after a while. Clapton knows how to take the right few notes and puts every ounce of himself into them. I'm not impressed with technique, I'm impressed with passion. and it seems that the only passion that the Mars Volta has is to show how many time signatures and time changes they can do.

The singer hogs the stage & wants to always be the centrepiece, violinist keeps whipping his bow, drummer is all funky and going nuts. Bassist is in the back where he cant be seen etc etc
