This is worlds away from Challenger 2, which is what I command. Shame the MoD wouldn't allow them a straight diesel, would have been better than the L60, which is an adaption of the JU88 bomber engine, or so I've been told.

This has always been one of my favourite tanks to watch. The noise is so distinctive and it is just such a large vehicle. A paint for any private owner who needs to do mechanical work on it but a joy to watch.

Drove these in Germany in the eighties. L60 main engine H30 genie, always broke down and spent many a happy hour upside down with the gearbox changing the pads. Major good point was that the engine stayed warm for days when broken down so gun over the back decks, cam net to lie on and tent over the barrel. Nowt but a yellow hand bag and cherry brandy for solace.

Crap engine and hydraulics, but lot's of fond memories with 9/12 Lancers in Germany driving them. Ripped a searchlight off one when my steering started leaking. Due to the camber of the road it go closer and closer to some big trees.

You can only pump those long sticks so fast!

this is a great mashine my dad was driving the chieftain tank at 1983- 1989 this thing is huge ;-)

@djraven2007 Leyland L60 wasnt it ? Trained on them at Catterick and then drove them in Berlin during the cold war, But yeah dam right about the steering. always had to bleed the hydrolics, Saw many tree, fence and BMW get taken out in Germany lol ...

I don´t know but my father was in the 3rd royal tank regiment they drove the chieftain tank at the rhinearmy in Paderborn (Germany). My Father told me this tank was are awesome vehicle to drive it.

All i remember was the L20 engine design flaws that lead to a 90% breakdown rate and and it was it was badly, badly underpowered. Because of major vibration issues it leaked oil onto brake/stearing pads/disks making stearing an almost impossible pig of a job. It also used a machine gun to get the correct range for the 120mm main gun, in short we shot them with a machinegun and hoped they stayed still while we fired the 12mm gun. I'm told Dafy Duck had a role in the design.

5-stars fantastic!...you don't want to ruin your jeans outfit...by some army surplus tops and bottoms woodland cammo or olive drab...tanks get dusty and grime etc-(milwaukee/m-60a3tts company commander 84th div )
