this song sucks....hes a rambling maniac, just because you can play "unique" things doesn't make it a good song, no structure whatsoever, i just heard noise.
Michael Hedges never had a Facebook page before. So I decided to start my own. Just go ahead and type in "Michael Hedges" in the search box and you'll see the page: "Michael Hedges: The Guitarist from Another Planet". I want to see if Hedges's fanbase is still out there somewhere. Long live Hedges!
Just because the structure of the song isn't formal or easy to pick out, doesn't mean the song is bad. Open your ears. This song is free and beautiful! With the background image of the tornado, this song becomes even more powerful!
I remember seeing Michael in concert, and he stated this song was about watching a tornado come in from the distance - the silence anticipation before the storm - the frenzy at the end bring the image of the tornado rolling right on by. This is a musical painting, and follows a visual structure more than anything. Love this piece...
I clicked on your name thinking I would find what I normally do...somebody talking shite but can't play. All cowboy hat and no cattle, you know what I mean? So imagine my surprise...you DO play. A YouTube first for me!
actually, this song starts out fairly disorientated and without without structure for a reason. we all silently anticipate the awkward rhythm to come.
I actually stumbled upon this artist as well, thanks to youtube. I am can tell you that I'm glad that I did. I will have to do some research but I am almost certain that he is quite the pioneer. Certainly impressed.
hedges is the master. i've seen him about nine times as well. for years i couldn't listen to the music because his death affected me on a deep level. it hurt me. he is so good to watch and admire that words are useless. his legacy is amazing and those that have come after have only ripped off his techniques but lack in soul and creativity. hedges has all. i miss you, michael hedges. you helped shape me.
I know what you mean - I missed seeing him play, but was an ardent admirer of his. I have almost every note of all his albums memorized, and it nearly killed me when I heard he'd died. All i can say is thank god for YouTube - his memory will live on.
music is supposed to be positive. why must people be negative? he's expressing himself through his music. be respectful. this is actually the first time i've heard of michael hedges and i'm glad i stumbled upon this video.
Ive been a fan of Hedges since about 1985, seen him live 9 times. While I dont consider this a great song in general, its a great musical recreation of the chaos of an approaching tornado, which is what he wrote it about. Please dont let this tune of Mikes be the tune you gauge his playing and composing by. As a starter I would suggets his first 4 releases, Breakfast in the field, Aerial boundries Watching my life go bye and Taproot. You might just find a great tune in one of them.
the actual track breakfast in the field, although not too technical, is sheer genious. i seldom have more fun playing something on guitar. ragamuffin is one of his most creative pieces i think, from aerial boundaries.
michael hedges was a great man and great musician, why are people arguing on the comments for his videos? grow up you silly children and listen to the music
I really agree w/ your comment . I know you posted awhile ago, but I noticed alot of youtubers engaging in these moronic exchanges about alot of talented artist's . I expect better , but am usually disapointed . peace
Well, there are actually some people out there that likes to listen to Britney Spears also... Allthou I can't say I fully understands the works of Spears. Think I prefer Hedges.
i heard this man was a GREAT guitarist... he uses alot of harmonics and i said i grow uninterest... i wanted to hear something great that this guy apparently has done! ffs... did i say i could do better dumbass?
whatever... "IS"... well... considering English is my 3rd language out of the 5 i speak... yes... i should've corrected that before posting, but my mistake.. i thought a smart guys like you would figure it out... i guess i was wrong... i am looking for a great song of his, GREAT.. and this in my opinion isn't one of them... did i make my self clear.. d-u-m-b-a-s-s
00kalm.... You're an ignorant twirp. Can you give me an example of a song that is great? He,Michael Hedges, states in interviews that the guitar to him is a medium for music ."I'm not trying to play the guitar. I'm trying to play music." Get a grip and get a life. Go and play with your PS and leave music appreciation to those who appreciate music.
The bass is so massive! The alternate tunings are totally wretched! Awesome!
