If I were to run a vehicle off this gas, I'd want my balloon protected inside a metal or plastic cylinder. Could put balloon inside cylinder, then fill it, maybe. Big plastic drum might work.
You guys are doing awesome work. I'm signing up for the email list. I have a question though on the natural gas. Is this the same gas coming in from my local utility company and can I tap in from that? Also, what's the cost of natural gas compared to gasoline prices (currently around $2.75/gallon midwest ) ? I guess I don't really know how much natural gas is going for at this time. Thanks for any help.
@BrutusJones yes, its the same stuff going to your home for your furnace. Its natural gas which is methane. You can drive on natural gas anywhere from the same as paying $1 to $2 per gallon. - Steve

knowpub, I am looking for the woodgas generator plans or kits you said would be available in 2009. For some reason I can't find it on your web page. This looks very much like something I'd like to try. Thanks for posting such great ideas.
@Maci333 well we have an entire section on wood gas generators. just go to USH2 (dot) com and CLICK on the HYDROGEN BUTTON and scroll on down... you'll see all of the books on wood gas, get the one called Hydrogen Generator Gas for Vehicles and Engines: Volumes 3 and 4, that is the best place to start, its a step by step plan, with photos, drawings, parts lists, exploded diagrams and everything needed for making a wood gas generator that will work on a generator. All parts are 'home depot' par
I know this hasn't been posted on in a while but I wanted to post a word of caution.
Starting a generator or shutting it down with a load on it (like these lights) is very hard on the generator.
In many cases it will eventually cause a rotor or stator to fry (especially in lower quality generators). This is a very costly repair some times exceeding the price of a new generator. When a generator slows down the voltage drops and the amperage spikes which damages the windings over time.
@BugsBMD umm...its a Honda EU2000i, its computer controlled, you can see it turn on the lights (clearly) AFTER it starts running, and a honda is anything but a cheap generator. So I don't think I'll have to worry about those spikes....
@timcat100 I give ALL those answers in the Fuels Video - Gaseous Fuels at USH2edu(dot)com How far you can drive, how many bags or balloons, or how many propane tanks with natural gas compressed in them. I do this for 3 different sizes of vehicles, and for ALL of the gaseous fuels. Hydrogen, natural gas, propane, methane, producer gas, wood gas etc.... its an excellent 98 minute long video. see USH2edu(dot)com
Ya know. I get written to ALOT, and there is a great deal of people who are lazy & comforatable being stupid. They want everything given to them and done for them. They could not find their rear end with both hands, let alone read the previous posts from MANY good people, or type in "Methane Digester" into google or YouTube. In fact, there are MANY EXCELLENT Methane Digester videos on YouTube. To a fair amount of you guys, WELL DONE. i see you thinking and doing. To others, WAKE THE HELL UP.
I wonder how many KWH's could be produced by an average human fart. After Taco Bell. Or perhaps elephant flatulence. Interesting vid, Now if we could refine large quantities of those gases efficiently without the use of large electrical loads, etc
Static only forms on exterior surfaces...NOT internal, plus..there is no oxygen or air in the balloon..its all natural gas. There is no explosion risk. If you took a torch to the side of the balloon it'd rupture and give you a nice flame and upward moving fireball for a few seconds and then it would be gone. the gallon of gasoline you keep for your mower is by far more dangerous.
Absolute simplicity. This is almost as simple and basic as it gets. The next step, is we'll show you how to produce a variety of fuels that you can store in balloons or items like balloons (very inexpensive) and have a reserve of energy. For example, if you were in 'nowhere' and you made that gas and had it in that size balloon, and ran the same generator and put the energy directly into a battery, w/ an inverer, a laptop would run for about 5 days, 24 hous a day from that energy.
Low atmospheric pressure,NG,might as well be a drunken weekend's worth of "beer farts" producing serious electricity but we are still paying BP and OPEC for fuel? Good Work Guys!
natural gas is OURS...comes from the ground, lots of wells all around the USA...huge methane hydrate deposits off the coast. I have two books at USH2 (dot) com that show you how to make methane at home. Biogas 1&2 and Biogas 3. You can start in a 55 gallon drum !! So you can make it, drill for it, nature makes it all the time.... so yeah.. it works and it screws OPEC... thanks for writing.

@mangyscavenger I DID run my vehicle off this gas, from the balloon !! see my other videos, the blue truck. Its a funny video too. :)

I want to power the lawn mower by this. Imagine the neighbor watching you driving the mower with the balloon attached (:

you should show that to nasa

could you hook up a propane tank to that generator?

@windoes98se yes...just as easily, but it would not float of course

Great idea....How long will it run on a full balloon and how many ballons full can I fit in my honda Civic trunk.

Hi Steven,
How can you exactly make the biogas yourself in your backyard and fill up the balloon with it ?
Can you please do a video about this ?
Many thanks.

Doesn't filling a balloon with gas present an explosion hazard?
Balloons seem to generate a lot of static & one tiny spark could cause a massive explosion.

Question: If you were to fill that balloon from say, your Nicor gas pipe, how many "therms" would it take?
tdetogne27 3 years ago
Right now the balloon is holding 0.73 therms of natural gas.
