when Pellew, the Admiral and General are discussing the operation in the Admiralty what is that round clock like instrument on the wall behind them 2:03?
The suggested date of this adventure implies contradictions. Cherette says he's been exiled for 5 years, suggesting 1795 or '96. They also mention restoring King Louis to the throne as their goal. Louis XVI was guillotined 21 Jan 1793, so they can't restore him. There are two other Louises: the uncrowned (died June '95) Dauphin and Louis XVI's younger brother Louis Stanislas Xavier declared "King Louis XVIII" on 16 June '95. Thus 1795 is implied by events. However...
@enscroggs The Battle of Quiberon took place starting on June 23, 1795 and Louis XVII died the 8th of June, so t'would be Louis XVIII restoring the monarchy. Which makes sense, since he helped to plan the failed invasion with his brother, the future Charles X of France.
The Admiral doesn't even go back to see if this heroic young man lived or died. Typical of those who make decisions of life and death for thousands. They keep in their own little bubbles and eat their steaks.Cheney and Bush should be forced to go to every military funeral of those they have help kill. Not that any of the families would want them there. Cheney and his money hungry friends who wanted this war for $. And I bet we're paying him wonderful benifits now that he's out of power.
@duckhunt1045 I had a french professor who told the class this "fact" but you are right. I'm not finding that it had anything to do with animals. Not like this historian professor to get it wrong but I can't track him down to see where he got his information. It isn't in any of the material I've researched so I'm sorry to have passed on misleading information. I try to never speak about something I don't know about or can't prove. It's a "thing" with me but I messed up here.
A french man would NOT look this sloverly. And, for once, I would change the script. The guiillotine. They should have refused to take it. Period. Do you know it was invented to kill sheep? What a horror of a machine. . .
@ZoSo3K its a weathervane thingymybob i suppose. probly attached to a wind thingymajig on the roof, just the job in a port if ya about to go sailin and ya want to see which way the wind is blowing
Anyone else notice, @ 3:47 when the officer is being attacked, there is a guy standing right behind them watching and tending to his horse... But he does nothing... ?
I love historical dramas but i wish i could watch them without thinking what they must have smelled like and also, I notice those long dresses dragging on the ground, and they would have been covered in mud and dog poo.
@mymagnoliatree Because it was his job, he was an English teacher, of French origin. People do not always teach their original language, that guy only kept the accent.
@CatAtomic99 That's really the use of clothing in general. Glad you've come to realise one of the world's most obvious facts that most people figure before age 10.
Nice to see Peter Vaughan alongside Robert Lindsay as they did in the late 70's in Citizen Smith i.e. Father & Son but Admiral & Captain in this series.
yay havent watched this video in ages, coz we had everysingle one of the hornblower vids, including the 2 newest ones, but we lost this one somewhere lol :(
Sorry to burst your bubble ppitm but there were no significant naval battles won by "colonists....with their natural maritime abilities" with the exception of one famous battle which had no measurable impact on the war. The American sailor was a smuggler, not a warrior. The British and French did the real fighting at sea. We also had several thousand French regulars helping us at Yorktown. Your elementary school history book was about as historically accurate as the bible.
your pretty much correct. For one thing, we didn't have the resources to raise much of a real nave, and two, our shipbuilding was always focused on providing fast ships for trade, not warships.
well, the title is (well, was) disputed; the Shia have the head of the house of Ali, while the Sunnis were divided as to who is Caliph; the ottomans however hae the best support for their claim imho.
@Minuteman351 Well, besides the handsome men, we like a bit of adventure too. Not too bloody. Personally, I love the magnificient ships! And the beautiful, beautiful photography. The scripts are so well written that it keeps you addicted. AND I want to see how far Horatio will go. :)
well now, you say that. But during the Revolutionary War, who defeated the British Army and Navy? A ragtag army of colonist who might be considered "peasents"
That's because French and German generals trained them to be good. At the beginning of the American Revolution all of the farmers and shopkeepers (middle-class people- not peasants) were pretty bad off; they didn't really become an army until after their winter training at Valley Forge. If it weren't for the help of Lafayette, von Steuban, and their respective governments, we might still be a British colony. It was not exactly a group of peasants who fought and won that war.
The middle class made up only a small portion of the populace. The people who worked for the middle class, i.e. laborers, secondary tradesman, poor farmers, etc. made up the majority of the population. (And let us not forget the enslaved who joined the army to win their freedom!) And I never said they did it all on their own, although to say that we might still be a British colony is a moot point.
Anyway, my original point was that throughout history, leaders repeatedly think the peasants will rise up and fight on their behalf for freedom. Generally, peasants do not do that. They want to be left alone to tend their fields. When someone starts taking away their traditional rights, that is when peasants start revolting, such as during the German Reformation.
That's a considerable stretch. The Royal was not defeated. More like inconvenienced. It continued to fight and win a two front war with the French in the West Indies. The colonists put up an impressive fight with their natural maritime abilities and the French were able to tie up the English fleets leading to the surrender of Yorktown.
There's a huge difference between French Peasants and American Colonist. American colonist where very well armed and far better marksman than the average British soldier. ( they got more practice, since a they where mostly hunters ) The battles at Bennington and Saratogo proved that. :)
