Nobody can bad-mouth Costello's voice in my opinion. But they are entitled to their opinion....however, nobody can argue he isn't PERFECT on this song.
This is a wonder Cd. The fact that Elvis can sing anything and make it sound special and unique makes him a one of a kind "Artist." I own many, sadly not all of his work.
I can listen to this everyday, all DAY,never enough and I think EVERY PERSON can relate to a relationship that's placed them into the frame thought? But at the same time, it's pleasing to the ears to hear!!! (-:
I never knew Costello could sing like this ,the whole combo is truly marvelous. So sad people never hear these sounds, although both artists at least have had success.
@deerfried When I think pop, I think 'happy, mindless music'. Like Abba or something. I certainly wouldn't put the melancholy tone and attitude some of Elvis Costello's music has in the same category as Dancing Queen.
The combination of Burt Bacharach with Elvis Costello is superb in every way; from Burt's beautiful arrangements to Elvis' melodious and powerful voice...a masterpiece.
I love this song it's from the "Painted By Memory" CD by Elvis and Burt Bacharach. Elvis is such a great singer and interpreter of these great tunes. Beautiful collaberation.
I don't think ANYone has ever quite captured the end of love like Burt has. What an inCREDible Melody- and Elvis, despite a somewhat eccentric interpretation, really
nails this song- the note he hits at 4.54 is a real heart-breaker.It seems there are
very few songs of this caliber being written today, sadly.
@GuitarMan1117a Can you show me a quote or something to prove this? And even if you can prove Burt wrote the music on this track, what about the rest of the album? Costello wrote much of the music on the album.
Well it may be eccentric but I think Elvis wrote the lyrics and i'm sure he helped with the melody. It's such a great great song either way. When I first heard it years ago I was blown away and I'd love to write something like it.
This song says so much to me. What happened to songs like this in today's industry? Burt Bachrach is a pure songwriting genious. And Elvis Costello is pure and genuine talent!
This is the only thing I have Bravo (the channel) to thank for. I remember one day during college winter break, I caught this on Bravo and I was dis-enthralled and captured by this entire album. Since then I've been an ardent fan or Mr. Costello. Now Bravo has changed and I no longer find by chance for stupid reality programmings
One of the best goddamn love-gone-bad songs ever written. What an incredible collaberation between two such diverse yet prolific song writers. "Here comes those tears again - just when I was gettin' over you." God gives you strength!
How many songs are there that make you cry every time you hear them? Bacharach is one of a dying breed of songwriters. And Costello rose far above the ranks of ordinary pop singer after tackling this piece.
agreed, I am a huge fan, but with Elvis, its not his voice, its his character that makes his work great, and the obvious feeling in his voice, he will tell you himself, he is not a natural talent, and has no great range. But he is great at what he does.
Oh My God!!! I love this song....NO one sings it Like ELVIS!!! I can watch the whole movie Grace of My Heart just to hear him sing this song during the credits. I can never get enough of it.

Paul McCartney and Burt Bacharach are two of my very favorite songwriters. And how costello got to work with them is beyond me. Because costello SUCKS. he really does. i just don't dig hm AT ALL. i've explored lots and lots and lots of songwriters and artists throughout the years, but after about 10 songs of costellos i was crying uncle. couldnt go anymore. diana krall must be a dummy too if she's married to him. jesus.

I hate just about everything there is about Costello. He's just a dumbass. A follower. I've given him a try because I thought if he worked with Burt Bacharach and Paul McCartney that he MUST be good. I've found that that's not the case. Not even in the slightest form. He really sucks.
How very subtle and intelligent of you!! a follower???
