It varies from person to person. as you already do Diabolo you should have the fine motor skills that will allow you to pick it up relatively quickly (a few months should have you confident enough that you won't burn anything :P), but it also depends heavily on who you have teaching you. if you have friends who spin poi already, that's a great place to start. Or a local fire gathering. People there are always willing to share their knowledge as i learned when i first started :)
