@Nelsonwmj nop, thats a Challenger. the smaller brother of the BIG BOY, the wheel configuration is 4-3-3-4 for the Challenger and 4-8-8-4 on the BIG BOY.

bigboy - 4-8-8-4,

this is a challenger 4-6-6-4, i hink its around 40ft shorter.

both the bigboy series (40**) and challenger (39**) were designed fir heavy freight trains, so beauty was never factored into the design, unlike the 4449, however like all steamers, they have a beauty all of their own, especially when working hard

Big Boy was bigger. It was a 4-8-8-4, while 3985 is 4-6-6-4. I just did a Google for Big Boy and found a lot of useful stuff.

Both types are most impressive. Modern trains hardly attract a second glance, but steam locos have the magic to pull the crowds every time.

Its got some action, but the wind was strong that day thus the clear blue sky and bright light. Made for some nicely exposed video just turn down the wind volume a tad

@iusetano we used to have a steamer smaller than this one but pretty big sitting on the rails just on the edge of town been there for yrs ppl complaied it was an eye so so off to the scrap heap it went
