In Germany our government has declined to sign up to ACTA (Anti-Counterfeiting-Trade-Agreement) because it would turn internet-providers into policemen. I think it's wrong because it strengthens commerce at the cost of art. Again. And those lobbyists are just so anally retentive (in German it's better: arschverklemmt).
What you were saying about the Hunger Games is absolutely right. Author Neil Giaman was against SOPA/PIPA because the internet had lead to people downloading his books, then going to go buy his new ones. He was genuinely happy about the internet's effects on his book sales.
Read "The Shadow of the Wind" by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. Just... guh. Beautiful, haunting, a love story beyond compare, and it's a book about books. WHAT? Right?
I agree with you. The internet can be harming to sales in the future, but it really helps out a lot with exposure. And not all sales are hindered by the internet. I was reading about this one author who published an ebook and sold millions. Also, it's not all about the sales. I publish some of my stories as ebooks free of price so that people get to know my work. Side note: I know ASL (American Sign Language) and you were cracking me up because some of your hand motions were signs. lol
I agree with you Andrew, the internet is a HUGE help to authors, especially those who are just starting out (like me ;D haha). But more importantly, I love after eights which I see you do too! Haha. I'd also like to say that you remind me a little of Simon Cowell only considerably less evil. Something in the way you construct your sentences, I don't know. What am I talking about? I forgot...umm...yes...bye :D.
@Lepreas Tut tut, that's cheating mister! You have to wait until exactly 1 second past 8. You can sit there with a small clock and your box of after eights, your eyes darting between the two as the seconds tick by until the moment finally arrives when you can rip open the box and gorge! That way they are more satisfying :P.
I view the issue the same way too. And yeah and there are many things that can be added but yeah, thats the main point! So, if i had to add something i would say how important is for the author or an artist to have his work seen all over the world. Apart from profit (which you explained how internet can help) i believe that there is nothing more important than the ability to spread your thoughts all around the world. I bleieve that this desire for communication is part of an authors nature.
Now that SOPA's done for, we still have to worry about PIPA, but you also should be concerned about ACTA, being that you live in the UK. The EU (I think) is putting fourth the European version of SOPA/PIPA, and it's called ACTA.
It's a silly thing that the government would become involved with the internet. The people who are for SOPA and PIPA are old, they probably don't use the internet as much as teenagers do and it's a thoughtless thing to do that. What ever happened to citizens having say in government?
Amen. Plus, no matter what, SOPA and PIPA are not going to stop pirating. People will find ways around them. But they will stop original content from smaller users, whether they be authors, video makers, songwriters, etc., from being spread and talked about.
The ones who wrote these bills are people without exposure, and possibly skills, to use of the internet. The problem with "our" governments and politicians is that they create laws and guidelines without proper consultation. I believe in supporting the industries and business owners since they are the driving force of the economy, but in this circumstance it creates an unfair barrier to those with limited resources.
Did the bill creators ever stop to think that without internet exposure, although sometimes illegal, whatever they are creating would not be nearly as popular. Take music on youtube for example. People post songs with lyrics or pictures and others discover it. I do this all the time. I find music, listen to a bunch of songs, then buy the album. I'm not going to buy anything if I can't completely see what I'm getting first. The music business (and others) would be nothing without the internet.
You are a good example of your point. A year ago who knew you? Now thousands of people, internationally, watch you. Without the internet how could this free publicity have been possible.
@evmoneyTV What's so great about Caesar? Hm? Brutus is just as cute as Caesar. Brutus is just as smart as Caesar. People totally like Brutus just as much as they like Caesar. And when did it become okay for one person to be the boss of everybody, huh? Because that's not what Rome is about. We should totally just STAB Caesar!
I love the scarf, and I agree about artist exposure. I think some people will always find ways to pirate, but I also know people that will legitimately buy things that they enjoy after said pirating.
All these companies don't care that people aren't following the copyright laws they just care that they arent getting paid for someone downloading their stuff for free. Even though they're already rich as fuck.
it's true for light, popular music, books or movies because in a million sales you wouldn't mind losing 50.000 so yes it works as a publicity but when you have a certain audience of lets say 50.000?
@colbort but its proportionate. If 1 million people buy a book it's not the case that the first 50k will download for free and the rest will buy, it is more a case of 1 in every 20 will download for free. So if only 50k people want it at all, around 2.5k (1/20th) would download for free and the rest would buy (obviously these figures are way off but I was just going with your example!). Hope that made at least a bit of sense :)
@thatboon I don't think it is proportionate (different authors different audience), but lets say its is, we are just speculating here. What i mean is that it doesn't have the same impact. It is similar to why progressive taxation is fairer.
I agree. The thing people don't get is, if someone's going to download a movie or whatever, chances are they were never going to buy it in the first place. I'll usually download something because I'm interested in it but would have no way to obtain it otherwise, or I'm not interested ENOUGH to spend money on it. If I really love something I'll probably buy it even after downloading it, if I can.
