I agree with you. The internet can be harming to sales in the future, but it really helps out a lot with exposure. And not all sales are hindered by the internet. I was reading about this one author who published an ebook and sold millions. Also, it's not all about the sales. I publish some of my stories as ebooks free of price so that people get to know my work. The ones who wrote these bills are people without exposure, and possibly skills, to use of the internet. The problem with "our" governments and politicians is that they create laws and guidelines without proper consultation. I believe in supporting the industries and business owners since they are the driving force of the economy, but in this circumstance it creates an unfair barrier to those with limited resources.

Did the bill creators ever stop to think that without internet exposure, although sometimes illegal, whatever they are creating would not be nearly as popular. Take music on youtube for example. People post songs with lyrics or pictures and others discover it. I do this all the time. I find music, listen to a bunch of songs, then buy the album. I'm not going to buy anything if I can't completely see what I'm getting first. The music business (and others) would be nothing without the internet.

it's true for light, popular music, books or movies because in a million sales you wouldn't mind losing 50.000 so yes it works as a publicity but when you have a certain audience of lets say 50.000?

If 1 million people buy a book it's not the case that the first 50k will download for free and the rest will buy, it is more a case of 1 in every 20 will download for free. So if only 50k people want it at all, around 2.5k (1/20th) would download for free and the rest would buy (obviously these figures are way off but I was just going with your example!). Hope that made at least a bit of sense :)

I agree. The thing people don't get is, if someone's going to download a movie or whatever, chances are they were never going to buy it in the first place. I'll usually download something because I'm interested in it but would have no way to obtain it otherwise, or I'm not interested ENOUGH to spend money on it.
