  • i have to give it to lauryn, she worked for this one! love the nod to the curtis mayfield arrangement/version. i like curtis' version but the one that grabs me by the heart every time and never lets go is the gladys knight & the pips version from the "claudine" soundtrack. lauryn's is excellent as well.

  • this is very nice i did not know she sang this song, curtis mayfield sung the original song as well as gladys knight on the same soundtrack everybody should check it out there all good but curtis shut it down

  • @tribe1964 yeah, this is good and the instrumentation is definately on point, I'd love to hear a properly recorded version of her doing this but nothing compares to Curtis doing it.

  • beautiful beautiful beautiful

  • lauryn we miss you ...i def wish u could come back out...i bet u you'd sell!

  • I love you Karol.

  • The Love of All Man Kind!

  • Im waiting for Lauryn to come back, such a talent

  • Curtis, man, we miss you!

  • when was this performance?

  • Out of all of them and they are all great but Gladys made it personal I know, I was there.

  • This is a song of beauty that she turned into a sublime performance. She imbued this song with a muted solemnity that distinguishes the effortless nature of the performance and the way it sounds like it just bubbled over from her soul and on to the stage. What a lovely and pure gesture.

  • "Almost impossible to do reciting the makings of you" What an apt expression given the circumstances of the performance. It is all the more poignant given the vast vacuum Mayfield's death had left. I wish they had the introduction she gives at the beginning. Then the listener can hear the pain in her voice as she tries to find comfort in the scripture she relays to the audience. Shes opened up this song and allowed it to be a testament to the sheer enormity of this man's talent and presence.

  • the perfect rendition of this...

  • 30 years later, I think Lauryn does a very good job! Her version is very close to the original and very souful. But 3 totally different artist. But 3 great versions..And Aretha's version is very good as well. Probably because it's a great song...PERIOD. Last comment - For me, This is Glady's song, and her voice is just drenched in soul. Much respect to the Curtis Mayfield.

  • my take on this "debate". I love Lauryn's version as I do the Curtis and Gladys versions. However, they are 3 different artist. Curtis is the originator, a musician who wrote a beautiful song. Gladys is arguably one of the greatest vocalist in R&B history. I think people are comparing Lauryn to Gladys's vocals. Thats just not fair. Aretha, who I think is the greatest R&B vocalist ever didn't sound as good as Gladys did on that song. Curtis Produced Gladys's version. 70's soul at it's BEST!!

  • i think Lauryn killed it!!! i absolutely love the way she sings and i think she sang this song beautifully!!

  • Wow opinions run hard here I see. but I do want to interject that Lauryns versions s a cover of the original version that Curtis sang himself. Gladys was slightly different for the Movie.. The song has elevated to a R&B "Standard" much like a My Funny Valentine" in Jazz. MUsic starts with the song and there will always be different interpetations of them. Everyone just be easy.

  • Exactly. Gladys version was different from the original with some elements added. Lauryn's is pretty much an exact cover of Curtis' original. Moreover Lauryn's version is live. So comparing a LIVE performance to a professional studio recording intended for release is impossible. Had Lauryn done this in the studio it may have even better. But for this to be live, I think it's quite perfect. Thanks for pointing that out. The comparisons were quite weird to me.

  • And Lauryn does a better cover than both Curtis and Gladys. But then again, THAT'S JUST MY OPINION!

  • @MsLadybug41 Who cares about your opinion, obviously you're the only one on here who doesn't like Lauryn's version. You defend yourself saying you're entitled to your opinion and then go on to say that Lauryn should've stayed away from that song. For all you know Lauryn would also have an opinion that would probably tell you to prove your vocal abilities... otherwise SHUT UP AND PISS OFF. If you wanna judge her performance make sure you can back it up.

  • MsLadybug41 You do protest too much. Who are you trying to convince? Lauryn sang this song in honor of the man himself at his famililies request. She does a beautiful job. Lauryn is not in competition with anyone. If you prefer Glady's version please feel free to go take a listen. We are here to enjoy Ms Hill and all her glory and pay tribute to the lyrical master Mr Mayfield.

  • If you are here to enjoy the glory and the essence I assume and there of your time should be spent doing as such and that only not posting comments to me lead by example and not by only talk a foot never taken is a step never a path never paved enjoy lauryn's work and not this post .

  • I think this version is just as good in some ways as the Gladys and Curtis version vocally. Musically, as far as the instrumentation behind her it doesn't compare, but people need to keep in mind this is a LIVE PERFORMANCE. I believe this performance is equal to the Gladys and Curtis' version. And as is the case with Lauryn Hill, had she done a STUDIO version she may have surpassed the originals, as she usually does with covers. For a live performance this is EXQUISITELY wonderful.

  • Glady's knight did this song live and it is still not the same it makes lauryn sound green at singing when she's not I am a lauryn hill fan always have loved her style and vocals ,she has a unique style of vocals singing songs from that era does not fit her voice neo soul is more her speed and sound she lays it down completely .

  • But you are not comparing Gladys live to Lauryn live. You're comparing Gladys studio-recorded standard version to Lauryn's live version. Obviously one is a professional studio version while the other was a live performance. There is no comparison. She doesn't sound green singing to me. She sounds like she's singing a relatively simple but beautiful song. She's always sung songs from older eras, so I still don't see the complaint. But to each his own.

  • @BreezyGraffiti It's not a complaint it's my opinion to me she sounds green singing this song in other words she didn't add to it in my opinion and I have seen glady's sing this song live so you do not know what I haved based my opinion on ,however like you stated to each its own .

  • She did nothing for this song glady's knight &pips laid it down so did curtis mayfield RIP brother .

  • Come on, behave yourself.

Lauryn Hill is as much an Icon as either Gladys or Curtis. And considering its a live performance...

I suppose your entitled to what you think,

    But I love it....

  • This is not a matter of behaving it's my opinion ,she has a neo soul type of voice every singer has a landmark sound she did nothing for this song I did not say couldn't sing it's your opinion thats she did I respect that and it's mines she didn't so your right I am entitled it's called freedom of speech .

  • I did not mean to cause you offense btw.

I use the expression behave yourself all the time for so many occassions, but I certainly dont think she did nothing for this song. She did it a credit.

It was a live version, not a studio production.

Listen to the tone and the subtle variations in her voice, its pure soul music.

  • What ever I said what I had to say I'm done with it ,I have better thing to do than debate about MS HILL .

  • How awesome. I love both this song and Lauryn Hill. Curtis Mayfield was the man.

  • Curtis Mayfield wrote and sang the ORIGINAL "The Makings of You".

  • I love...love Lauryn. she needs to come back and share that beautiful voice . I can listen to her all day everyday. Lauryn we miss you !

  • Lauryn is great, but Glady Knight's ORIGINAL version is truly extraordinary!!!!!

  • Seriously, ARETHA's version is such UNIQUE. Live's interpretation and piano is SOULNESS.

  • @ujuanka

actually the ORIGINAL is by Curtis Mayfield on 1970's "Curtis" but it's not on this site..Gladys' came out in 74 and Curtis produced that version..Gladys' is so much more soulful than his..is great too..

  • Curtis Mayfield was the original of this tune my friend.

  • Lauryn seriously gets me through. I miss you, woman. Please come back to us.

  • I hope some day she makes a successful comeback, she loved the worng men and it did her in but the voice is still the best. South Orange's own.

  • Yes she deserved so much better than what she got I would love to see her come back.

  • true to form

  • Lauryn Hill sounds good singing this one!

  • Lauryn come back to us, we miss good music....

  • AMAZIN....she is EVERYTHING....she is the greatest artist our generation has seen...easily

  • well said i miss her very much i could really cry rite now

  • This is how beautiful!!!

  • Year? At least tell me if it's pre-Unplugged or after Unplugged...

  • This is on a mixtape called The Re-Education of Lauryn Hill. gooogle it. Man the songs are AWESOME! They have brought me closer to God. God Bless.

  • WOW! i'm not sure which one i like better the curtis version or this one

  • Gladys Kight has a good version...

  • You should never put the word "Good" in the same sentence with Miss Gladys Knight.

  • BEST.

  • Ms. Gladys Knight version is the best i've heard.

  • PLS Tell me where you got this song?

  • i miss you lauryn

  • U betta sang...I love u lauryn! The makings of a true singer.

  • Voice-lessons can be taught..but Soul-lesson could never be taught--either it's in you or it's not. Lauryn, your soul-stock stay swoll! I love you! U done Curtis proud...Gladys too.

  • well done Lauryn!!!

  • no one can make me melt like lauryn...i love her voice

  • I'm sorry, I like both Lauren and Gladys's version, but Curtis Mayfield's version was the best.

  • Curtis Mayfield wrote this song.

  • When was this?

  • I like the song but Gladys version had more feeling and emotion in the song. That comes from being part of the era and the struggle on the period. Good cover though

  • TRUE!!!!!!

  • i agree gladys version is the best for the remake. but i love lauryns voice. well at least the voice she used to have, just like whitney used to have the best singing voice period

  • The TRUTH! Ms Lauryn is who she IS, PERIOD. And I Thank her for being WHO she is. Peace and continued BLESSINGS to you and your loved ones, EricSean

  • Damn, I miss Lauryn.... =(

  • Man she freak this song I wish she would come back to yall :(

  • Now officially my favorite version of this song. Thanks for uploading!

  • Curtis put his foot off in this one right here..... the lyrical structure of this song is amazing.... truely!! THE LOVE OF ALL MAN KIND?!?!? r u serious? droppin that GAME ON EM!!! lol lauryn doin a good job doe...

  • I love this version Go Lauryn!!!!, but Gladys Knight's version is the bizzness!

  • This is my favourite Curtis Mayfield song, and up there as one of my favourite songs of all time. He was such a wonderful lyricists, it's as if he wrote words in color.

  • swat19- couldn't agree with you more.

  • Comment removed

  • Actually, this is the way it's supposed to be sung! He wanted us to know what made us who we were as Black people! Curtis went through those turbulent times of Blacks, and he was all for Black Power and self expression. In this song Black children at that time, he felt were the new generation of Blacks, you really have to know about Curtis! Fortunately I grew up in the 70's!

  • eeew monicas version is wack, are u serious?this isnt supposed to be a "happy" song.

  • i like monicas version just because i love her and i love the original version

  • so beautiful, my fav version

  • this was good, but I'm sure all can agree ain't nothin like the original with Gladys...it was more soul behind Gladys' voice and delivery. She felt it more. This was pretty good tho...

  • Actually there is none like the Original by Curtis Mayfield. Gladys was nice too but not even close.

  • I didn't know Curtis made the original. I have to look that up to hear it asap! Thanks!

  • yup yup. she is singing this live at a Curtis Mayfield tribute concert, which is why it sounds so somber. there is another recording where she gives a little speech in the beginning of this performance in tribute to him. i wish i could find it :(

  • naw man ...the best version is the ORIGINAL version...and that would of course be CURTIS' version...the cat what made up the tune.....sadly , i can't find it on here or i'd lay it on you , man

  • Gladys & Aretha!

  • Yes I agree this is a song lauryn should have stayed away from ,but she is still a awsome singer with great style and great creativity it's like her original style ,not many artist can remake her song and do it justice.

  • one of the best to ever do it... L-BOOGIE

  • Nice rendittion.

  • I wish she would come back spittin some rhymes

  • I MISS HER!

  • Wow...so soulful...blown away

  • Gone, GIRL !!!

  • This is the best cover I heard so far of this song..Gladys killed it and Lauryn followed up nicely!!!

  • Love it girlfriend. Do U boo.

  • Greetings loved ones....Lauren you did a loveiy job...Father Mayfield wolud be proud...come back queen...we need you!!!!!!

  • nice.

  • Lauryn is exceptional!!!!!!!

This is just a beautiful song. Mr. Curtis Mayfield is an exceptional singer and songwriter!!!!!! I've never heard anyone not do this song justice. Although Gladys' version is the sweetest one thus far. RESPECT!!!!!!!!

  • I normally don't like Curtis Mayfield covers, but Lauryn makes it her own. What a great post!!

  • Awesome, Lauryn knows how to do it!!!!

  • I'm glad this performance is back up. She sounds amazing here!!!

  • thanks for the upload. i remember a while back someone had the actual video of her singing. i think their account got deleted. anyone happen to have it?

  • No, that video was just composed of clips from her performance at Dave Chappelle's Block Party (which is now on youtube if you never saw it). This was recorded at a Curtis Mayfield tribute concert.

  • This was amazing!

  • i really like this versiob

  • I think she honored his memory very well. No one could ever touch his style but, she captured his soulful presentation

  • It's true. Only Curtis could REALLY sing this. Like missayawk says: His version is truly "2nd to none". But it is of course always an honor to have someone "recite" you.

  • I know Lauryn did her best, but Curtis doing it in his falsetto style is "2nd to none".

  • I don't think it was ever Lauryn's intention to outdo Mr Mayfield. I don't think you realize this actually a live performance at the "Memorial Service of Mr Curtis Mayfield". Before she started signing she read from the Bible and she how honored she was to be performing that day.

  • such a beautiful song
