an untrained raven is still smart enough to figure out how to crack a nut open with their surrounding. the only reason why trained ravens are used is because a wild raven will most likely not attempt to do this.
Awesome video! I've spent the last year looking after a family of crows, and they visit most days for tasty treats. It's a total honor to feed them and enjoy their company. I've watched them many a time take their treats and hide them with debris...normally leaves; for a food source when I'm not around. Respond to this video... Actualy,i saw a simular vid,(about 10 years ago) were INDEED the ravens figuered out to put things into tubes to raise the water level and get at the meat, proving that they where aware of displacement/boyancy
@luigiperso yeah that was kind dissapointing hearing that. But that on it's own still says a lot about their intelligence or more specifically their ability to learn.
not even a human would guess that the two tubes were connected at the wooden base, and that dropping stones in one would raise the waterlevel in another.
@luigiperso thought so what with the 'stones' being all in the same colour combination. Still pretty cool, though; I doubt most non-corvid birds would be able to be trained in this way.
@luigiperso There are other tests on wild ravens/crows which show a lot of intelligence like when they want a container with food, but the other crow steals it, the first crow will grab the wrong container first to trick it, then go and get the real one after.
@luigiperso training is just learning by being taught. yeah its not as impressive as if they figured it out themselves but, it is still rather impressive. it shows they are intelligent enough to do this.
@umidontno040394 not really intelligent, you can condition most animals to learn that doing one thing (e.g. dropping pellets in the tube) = reward (e.g. food in the other tube).
@WhatsHappening783402 sadly no but in simpler tests they are proven to show logic, even when untrained. i just watched a video where some guy tied meat on a long string and hung it on a branch. this would never happen in the wild, so neither experience nor instinct would help the raven out. it hadnt been trained and it had never watched another raven solve the problem. it stood on the branch, and started pulling the string up, holding it down with its claws until the meat was high enough for it.
@WhatsHappening783402 there's a suggested video also by bbcworldwide which shows wild ravens in japan dropping nuts on roads for cars to run over and crack them. they also do it on the stripes and wait for the red light for cars to come before they go and eat the bits of cracked nuts, so they don't get run over in the traffic. you tell me that's not clever.. and those are wild ravens without any training by humans
IronMercenary, parrots are essentially more tame ravens. Ravens would be a bit too aggressive to make good houseguests. This is an interesting test, wouldn't expect for them to be able to solve this. This reaffirms ravens as one of my favorite species.
I mean if you walk into a party with a pet parrot, their all like "Oh okay, cool he has bird with him" but if you bring a pet raven to the party people will be all like " This dude is one badass son of a bitch!" I envy those who have a pet raven... or a pet eagle :3.
@viniciusvrd Yup, it does those. The only time i see those ads is when im using internet explorer (i always use Firefox) and i havent downloaded ABP for IE. No adds on youtube or sites like gametrailersdotcom etc... read up on it its really good. :)
If you can replicate a solution to a problem, you can figure it out by your self. it's just a matter of when, not if. very intelligent birds. Awesome creatures.
When I was a tiny kid my dad handed me and my brother each a bb gun and said, "Don't shoot robins" (Michigan state bird). So we looked at each other and went down a horrible path of shooting birds for "fun." If only that mindless fool had talked to us about respecting God's creatures and maybe taken us to a library to learn about them or taught us how to photograph or draw them, I wouldn't be having the flashbacks I have of these sensitive, smart, beautiful creatures dying horribly at my hands!!
@guyNbluejeans There are way too many of certain animals. You probably helped to feed other animals. What is MUCH, MUCH more terrible is the people who allow their cats to roam outside killing anything that moves for fun! The U.S. Dept. Of Fish & Wildlife calls it a wildlife conservation dilemma. Cats kill hundreds of millions of wild animals annually in the U.S. just for fun. Then the ignorant cat owners complain when a coyote gets their cat AFTER they allowed it to kill all the coyotes' food!
@3Mudbone1 I appreciate your valid insights on the subject. I guess there's a lot of truth when people say, "What will it matter a billion years from now?"
As for myself, the philosophical onion rings extend as far as my memories of needlessly shooting these beautiful creatures that were in one moment singing and loving their lives, and in the next hanging upside-down and bleeding where their beaks were blown out the back of their heads!
I'll never forgive myself for being so incredibly stupid
@guyNbluejeans HA ha! (No offense) You MUST forgive yourself! And I doubt very much if they were ever doing what you said. Does an owl, hawk or eagle regret that they killed? I don't think so.
@3Mudbone1 I have no idea if an owl ... regrets killing. I just know I regret what I did. I can only speak for myself and hope that parents take to heart my comments and think real, real hard about getting their boys bb guns. I'm not against guns at all, but little kids running around with 'em? ... you might as well give them the car keys.
There are millions of wonderful and positive things parents can do for their kids, such as teaching them to paint or play a musical instrument. ....
@3Mudbone1 Also........ if we're going to be honest about it, one can easily make the argument that it's the human animal that's causing the most harm in the world and to the world. Therefore, would one cry tears of pain or tears of joy if it were to happen that some great pandemic were to come along and wipe-out a significant portion of the human herd?
hey birds aren't bird brained that's just ignorance(no I don't mean rude) birds just have compact brains size doesn't really matter with them as much.. I've seen budgies playing fetch and retrieve and they're pretty small birds.
So who watched the whole video thinking these birds were super genius birds, only to be disappointed when dingle nuts tells us that these birds have been trained to do this? Shoulda spilled the beans earlier.
Looks like from the comments people have not listened to what was said - at the end the voicover explains that the ravens were trained to do this and did not figure it out for themselves...
But (the other's) mind imposed on him the killing of his brother, so he slew him and became one of the losers. (30) Then Allah sent a raven scratching up the ground, to show him how to hide his brother's naked corpse. He said: Woe unto me! Am I not able to be as this raven and so hide my brother's naked corpse? And he became repentant. (31) Qur'an ......
Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls?
Well she says at the end that they have been trained for this, so obviously they have. They're still more intelligent than what you'd expect from a bird though, there's a bunch of other fancy tests to watch ^^
If'n U think, that all we know, Is to roll down slopes, made white with snow, Then looky here, you slandering brutes, We'll soon file class action suits, From your myth & poets jest, Targets grew upon our breasts, Your laws say black's same as white, Tho chapels' skies show doves in flight, Won't be long now mark our caws, Til you're hoisted on ur own petards, Our counsel soon will file our tort, For Poe's ass astral hauled to court...
Gee, the cameraman was standing by each one looking at it - "find" isn't exactly right word. Clearly the humans were guiding the birds if not outright training them
Recent studies by Bird and Emery (2009) have shown that given experience of the idea of raising a water level (or a pressure released trapdoor with a worm inside) rooks (and evidence suggests other corvids too) will use stones(real ones as opposed to bright coloured ones) as weights, as well as using sticks to push things etc. They are remarkably smart birds showing problem solving skills beyond those of the great apes (our closest relative)
On top of that they can manufacture simples tools.
ravens, crows, jays, jackdaws, and magpies belong to a familiy of super intelligent birds called corvid and if humans were to go extinct like dinos, they will be the next in line to be the master of this planet
@LBTennis Remember what ur momma said, "dont say anything that would hurt someone elses feelings" or something like that, whatever. Just cut me a break brah
If man kind ever discovers the secrets to creating a time machine to go back to the beginning of the world, likened to when we sent a monkey as the first in space may I suggest we send a raven or two first, life preserver and food.
The narrator is honestly the stupidest women alive. Here she is trying to prove avian intelligence, and she can't tell the difference between a stone and aFUCKING KINDERSURPRIZE CONTAINER!!!!
@Ultimategrid That is Dawn French genius. And of course they're kinder surprise containers.... that have obviously got a stone inside them! They've used the containers so the birds can find them quicker and so we the audience can see them clearly.
well actually there are youtube videos where guineapigs do comparative things, ignoring for a moment that they can't climb that well, but fetching things and putting it into a container is very straightforward. Now that I think about it, there are videos about goldfish doing something like this!
at the end for doing the reward the raven gets the kinder egg toy

There was also a study conducted at University of Oxford where 2 birds got a piece of food out from a tube using a hook-wire in 9 out of 10 trials.
My statistical analysis of this study (z=2.21, p=0.027) indicates "fair evidence" of animal intelligence....

They use "Pascal's law".
RollingPotato02 11 months ago
Well she says at the end that they have been trained for this, so obviously they have. They're still more intelligent than what you'd expect from a bird though, there's a bunch of other fancy tests to watch ^^

Gee, the cameraman was standing by each one looking at it - "find" isn't exactly right word. Clearly the humans were guiding the birds if not outright training them

Perhaps we could use ravens to balance the budget. They seem to know what they are doing.

@CBCOlympics I know right?! they should at least put useful and important ads like animal conservation....
juanarruti 6 months ago
@CBCOlympics Google a thing called "adblock" if you already have not. It's a browser add-on that gets rid of youtube ads.

On top of that they can manufacture simples tools.

sawokli7 1 year ago
ravens, crows, jays, jackdaws, and magpies belong to a familiy of super intelligent birds called corvid and if humans were to go extinct like dinos, they will be the next in line to be the master of this planet

Ultimategrid 1 year ago
@Ultimategrid That is Dawn French genius. And of course they're kinder surprise containers.... that have obviously got a stone inside them! They've used the containers so the birds can find them quicker and so we the audience can see them clearly.
mojododo85 1 year ago
@mojododo85
Regardless of who she is, she called them stones the whole damn time.
Ultimategrid 1 year ago
well actually there are youtube videos where guineapigs do comparative things, ignoring for a moment that they can't climb that well, but fetching things and putting it into a container is very straightforward. Now that I think about it, there are videos about goldfish doing something like this!

they have to be trained. How else would they know dropping stones in another tube would cause the food to rise?

@bananian They see with there eyes

@jammingwithmarley
how do they know in the first place that they have to drop stone into one tube to cause water in the other tube to rise?
It's a moot point anyway, the video said at the end that they were trained.
bananian 1 year ago
I know some people that probably would not figure that out, unless you told them how to do it.

@completetvnut2 There are way too many crows and I shoot them. The crows harrass the ravens. I would never shoot a raven.
