I have to take exception to the idea that Johnny Ray came up on his own with his so-called animations. Howling Wolf [Chester Arthur Burnett] was 17 years older than Johnny Ray and had been doing his animations quite awhile before Ray came along. When Wolf played his guitar, he would turn it over backwards and forwards, and throw it around over his shoulders, between his legs, throw it up in the sky. He also crawled across the floor playing the guitar and/or his harmonica at the same time.
I think he look a lot like David Bowie in several of his pictures and some of his 'over the top' gestures are a lot like David Bowie's 'in your face' kind of performances from his youth.

probably the first pop star I saw. Blackpool early 50s. What a wonderful performer I remember him well. 71 now. How time flies. Best wishes to all his fans.
Around 1976 or 1977 I worked for a liquor store (Danny's) that sat next to Barney's Beanery in West Hollywood. I made a delivery of booze and some groceries to Johnny Ray. He was very friendly and was a very good tipper. Very nice. I didn't know who he was but my boss said he was huge in the 50's.
I lived in Buffalo in 1950...but was only 7 at the time...I loved all his songs...finally got to see him at Hi-Teen Club, a few years later, it was hosted then by Bob Wells...some of my fonder memories of the city and growing up there.

Not bad eh, considering this great artist was tone deaf. Wish , some of todays artists could sing like this great man. Thanks for posting this track, it was a very favourite one of my late dad's.
@1RomanticSoul This is a fantastic song, and I've loved it since it was first released. I don't care if Johnny liked to make it with chickens, he was a superlative entertainer. So what does Brokeback Mountain have to do with ANYTHING?
@1RomanticSoul - I became a fan of Johnny Ray because he was my father's favorite singer. Homosexuality will always be evil. It is a mortal sin a grave offense against the natural law which God instituted. Sadly the only way society has come a long way is by distancing itself further from the Lord by society's acceptance of sin. Truth is truth and no matter what you or others say, evil can never be good. Hell is a long way to go.
@1RomanticSoul I don't need or want your sympathy. You should give your sympathy to all the homosexuals you encounter by telling them how much they offend God through their abnormal actions. You do not have the slightest clue who God is and what He demands from us. I doubt that you have ever read His eternal truths found in the Holy Bible. You insult God by insinuating that He creates such an abomination. He is all
@1RomanticSoul ---A commonly held false idea in our day is that God creates some people homosexual (or that homosexuality is a result of some sort of “psychological” problem). The truth is that God doesn’t create anyone with a homosexual orientation and that all those who are truly homosexuals (even those who are not engaging in homosexual acts) are homosexuals because of a demonic takeover and mortal sin.
@1RomanticSoul ---Those who scoff at this statement are simply faithless liberals who don’t want the truth and have no concept of the supernatural world. Romans 1- “Because that, when they knew God, they have not glorified him as God, or given thanks; but became vain in their thoughts, and their foolish heart was darkened... who changed the truth of God into a lie; and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
@1RomanticSoul -For this cause God delivered them up to shameful affections. For their women have changed the natural use into that use which is against nature. And, in like manner, the men also, leaving the natural use of the women, have burned in their lusts one towards another, men with men working that which is filthy, and receiving in themselves the recompense which was due to their error...
@1RomanticSoul --they who do such things, are worthy of death; and not only they that do them, but they also that consent to them that do them.”
Romans 1 clearly teaches that because these persons “worshipped and served the creature rather than the creator” and “changed the truth of God into a lie” God gave them up to homosexuality, which is described as a SHAMEFUL AFFECTION.
@1RomanticSoul --Further, Romans 1 clearly teaches that homosexuality is “against nature,” which means that this orientation is foreign to man’s nature, that is, it is NOT INSTILLED BY GOD.
Lastly, judging others is wise and prudent, for then how are we to discern the evil tree from the bad tree or the good fruit from the bad fruit? Judging is necessary, for without it man will say that there is nothing that is evil and no one needs repentance or salvation.
@1RomanticSoul -When I look into the mirror I see a sinner who begs Jesus' forgiveness each day and I ask for the grace not to offend Him anymore because His Majesty has already been greatly offended.
I apologize for all the separate responses, but YouTube only allows 482 characters for each reply box.
@loverofgoodmusic23 hahah, you really are koo-koo my friend. religion has completely brain washed and diluted your ways of thinking. You say homosexual s r against nature, to me (an atheist) nature created these humans, to be attracted to people of the same sex and that is completely natural. you want me to tell a living human being they offend "GOD" ?? a non existant IDEA that humans created over thousands of years while lacking the knowledge we have today? You're a sick person. go to "hell".
@ryanneglect -No, you are the one who is DELUDED. You cannot even spell correctly, the word is deluded, not "diluted" which means-Make a liquid thinner or weaker by adding water or another solvent to it. But I doubt that you ever picked up a book to educate yourself, let alone read the Holy Scriptures. It seems all you can do is name call and insult, which shows a lack of intelligence on your part. I had previously explained why homosexuality is an UNNATURAL,UNHOLY act and you still don't get it.
@loverofgoodmusic23 yeah it was a typo. i have not insulted you at all. actually, you just doubted that i ever read a book to educate myself. do you think i came to the conclusion that god does not exist out of the blue? everything in life is based off of fact. tangible proof and accepted theories. god is nothing. god is an idea you have wired your brain to believe is true. there are thousands of gods in the world, how can you be sure your god is THE god? if you were born in a different part
@loverofgoodmusic23 of the world, you would most likely believe in a different "god". religion was created to make people comfortable with death. the idea of eternal life sounds pretty tasty. but once again, it is only an idea created by man
@ryanneglect --- But that is no surprise because atheists have no truth within them, so how can they ever be right? They make up their own rules and beliefs as they go along in life.
You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and he stood not in the truth; because truth is not in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof. John 8:44 .
@ryanneglect -Did it ever cross your feeble mind that if it wasn't for "Hetrosexual" relationships meaning like your parents had-YOU would never have been born, neither would all the other six point eight billion have been born. Ponder that for awhile!
But as long as you have the breath of life in you, it's not too late for your redemption.
@loverofgoodmusic23 us atheists do not make anything up. infact, you're the one playing make believe. we don't spread lies of an eternity of hell, or heaven either. we know that this life is the only life there is. you live, you die.. like a tree or a flower. your threats of hell mean nothing to us, because we know hell is only an idea created by man. by the human brain. we are merely animals walking this earth. You can have your fairy tale, but don't accuse us of lacking truth.
@AntaresInScorpius fag? are you calling me a homosexual? lol, because i'm not. and even if i was, your insults mean nothing to me. it only proves your stupidity. atheism* is far from a "religion". let's define religion: a strong belief in a supernatural power or powers that control human destiny - now let's define atheism: a lack of belief in the existence of God or gods.
@ryanneglect -Simply humble yourself, ask God to show you His truth and pray the Holy Rosary. With time you will see a shining new person, one who will be on the path to eternal life!
@loverofgoodmusic23 atheists have no truth? you think you are a better person because you suffer from the delusion of an invisible man in the sky? written in a book by ancient tribesmen who lacked the knowledge we have today. this is 2010 my friend, and you are still too ignorant to open your mind. it is 100% fact that we evolved from primates. approving of homosexuality doesn't mean there won't be any heterosexuals left to pro create. you are the one with a feeble mind.
Its about time you all got an education and learnt the facts about the bible and stop talkin shit about the way you believe it ! you all seem so stupid because of your narrow way of thinkin its unbelievable. The Bible is so full of truth most people run scared and talk the crap as you all seem to be doin.
@1THARNEY i have an education. education has nothing to do with religious beliefs or lack their of. the bible is bullshit! (in my opinion). you're narrow thinking, not me. i've considered all options fairly and have come to the conclusion that god does not exist. if you were born in a different part of the world, you would believe in a different god all together. there are thousands of "gods" in the world. it's very ignorant of you to claim that YOUR god is THE god.
@ryanneglect You have a right to that opinion! But, many scientists believe in some sort of intelligent engineer, or call it a God. Because all matter is made from "identical atoms" the point being, how are the same atoms, made to become flesh, blood, steel, wood, stone, etc.? This is a fact! So, before you give up on a Greater Force, or what some people call God, the Master engineer, yo should think about this! Until we can force atoms to behave a certain way, we must zip it!! Peace!
@clevelandphil ~ You're entitled to your Opinion but that was not the opinion of most critics or of most people that saw both films...
Over 45% of Academy Voters (All Academy Members can vote for Best Picture) refuse to even go to "Free" screenings to watch Brokeback Mountain because of the Movie's Theme..
As liberal & as Tolerant Hollywood "PRETENDS" to be it's still under the control of the intolerant Homophobes just like SAG(Union)..I'm a member so I should know!!
@1RomanticSoul Brokeback put me to sleep. Crash did not. If gays don't like SAG, maybe they could form a new organization for gay actors. The Film Actors Guild. Because gays make films, not movies.
Well I will never forget lining up to see Johnny Ray at the London Palladium UK. We were told all the seats had been sold but we could stand up in the gods. When he sang this song the girls in a balcony box at the side put a rope ladder down and asked him to climb up it. He did not of course. I stood outside to get his autograph but never did.
I was led to this song by the article on the death of ("Sing Along With") Mitch Miller this week. "Cry" was one of the many big hits produced by Miller at Columbia Records in the '50's .
My brother, Pat, still does a great rendition of this song at the piano bar and the crowd always loves it. Terrific song. Thanks for posting it.
One song that brings memories back of riding in a 1949 Chevy club coupe. Jim used to sing this to me....I loved it so much. Enjoy what the 50's generation loved!
Later I'll put out "The Little White Cloud That Cried." another great and beautiful song to dance to and to fall in love.
This is the best Johnny song!!!! I put comments in earlier, but they disappeared... He puts a lot of soul into at the middle to the end... No one can do it better!!! I think that he is partly deaf, and so, he makes more of an effort that others to sing this great song!!!
I remember this song... This was Johnny Rays best song!!! He had so much soul in the middle to the end of the song.... It was fun to hear and watch him sing this song!!! No one could do the song like him!!! I think he was partly deaf, and so he would put more effort into the song than others!!!
One great song, i love it. x

I would wait until my mother went next door and I would play this on the record player. The flip side was the little white cloud that cried. I loved Johnny Ray. He could really belt it out.

Not bad eh, considering this great artist was tone deaf. Wish , some of todays artists could sing like this great man. Thanks for posting this track, it was a very favourite one of my late dad's.

Johnny was far & away ahead of his time as a Performer.
The conventional critics did everything they could to find fault with him but he stayed true to himself through it all.
It wasn't easy being "openly Gay" as a Singer/Performer or Actor in Hollywood in the 50's no matter how good you were @ your Profession.
Executives would avoid you like you like the plague.
We've come a long way Baby from then but there's still a long way to go..
Brokeback Mountain's snub by Hollywood proved that..

@1RomanticSoul This is a fantastic song, and I've loved it since it was first released. I don't care if Johnny liked to make it with chickens, he was a superlative entertainer. So what does Brokeback Mountain have to do with ANYTHING?

@1RomanticSoul
Critics always do that. Trying to gain fame by downsizing people.

@loverofgoodmusic23 ~ You have my sympathy that you've never learn the true meaning of what God expects of All of us.
It's not our place to play God & judge others but to learn tolerance & understanding of all God's children no matter how he chose for them to be born.
Yes we were born the way we are.
It's wasn't a choice on our part to have to constantly listen to people like you judge us & to look @ us like we're God's abomination.
Evil is what you'll see when you look into the mirror.
1RomanticSoul 1 year ago
@1RomanticSoul I don't need or want your sympathy. You should give your sympathy to all the homosexuals you encounter by telling them how much they offend God through their abnormal actions. You do not have the slightest clue who God is and what He demands from us. I doubt that you have ever read His eternal truths found in the Holy Bible. You insult God by insinuating that He creates such an abomination. He is all
pure and perfect.
loverofgoodmusic23 1 year ago
@1RomanticSoul ---A commonly held false idea in our day is that God creates some people homosexual (or that homosexuality is a result of some sort of “psychological” problem). The truth is that God doesn’t create anyone with a homosexual orientation and that all those who are truly homosexuals (even those who are not engaging in homosexual acts) are homosexuals because of a demonic takeover and mortal sin.
loverofgoodmusic23 1 year ago
@1RomanticSoul ---Those who scoff at this statement are simply faithless liberals who don’t want the truth and have no concept of the supernatural world. Romans 1- “Because that, when they knew God, they have not glorified him as God, or given thanks; but became vain in their thoughts, and their foolish heart was darkened... who changed the truth of God into a lie; and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
loverofgoodmusic23 1 year ago
@1RomanticSoul -For this cause God delivered them up to shameful affections. For their women have changed the natural use into that use which is against nature. And, in like manner, the men also, leaving the natural use of the women, have burned in their lusts one towards another, men with men working that which is filthy, and receiving in themselves the recompense which was due to their error...
loverofgoodmusic23 1 year ago
@1RomanticSoul --they who do such things, are worthy of death; and not only they that do them, but they also that consent to them that do them.”
Romans 1 clearly teaches that because these persons “worshipped and served the creature rather than the creator” and “changed the truth of God into a lie” God gave them up to homosexuality, which is described as a SHAMEFUL AFFECTION.
loverofgoodmusic23 1 year ago
@1RomanticSoul --Further, Romans 1 clearly teaches that homosexuality is “against nature,” which means that this orientation is foreign to man’s nature, that is, it is NOT INSTILLED BY GOD.
Lastly, judging others is wise and prudent, for then how are we to discern the evil tree from the bad tree or the good fruit from the bad fruit? Judging is necessary, for without it man will say that there is nothing that is evil and no one needs repentance or salvation.
loverofgoodmusic23 1 year ago

You're a sick person. go to "hell".
ryanneglect 1 year ago
@ryanneglect -No, you are the one who is DELUDED. You cannot even spell correctly, the word is deluded, not "diluted" which means-Make a liquid thinner or weaker by adding water or another solvent to it. But I doubt that you ever picked up a book to educate yourself, let alone read the Holy Scriptures. It seems all you can do is name call and insult, which shows a lack of intelligence on your part. I had previously explained why homosexuality is an UNNATURAL,UNHOLY act and you still don't get it.
loverofgoodmusic23 1 year ago
@loverofgoodmusic23 yeah it was a typo. i have not insulted you at all. actually, you just doubted that i ever read a book to educate myself. do you think i came to the conclusion that god does not exist out of the blue? everything in life is based off of fact. tangible proof and accepted theories. god is nothing. god is an idea you have wired your brain to believe is true. there are thousands of gods in the world, how can you be sure your god is THE god? if you were born in a different part
ryanneglect 1 year ago
@loverofgoodmusic23 of the world, you would most likely believe in a different "god". religion was created to make people comfortable with death. the idea of eternal life sounds pretty tasty. but once again, it is only an idea created by man
ryanneglect 1 year ago
@ryanneglect --- But that is no surprise because atheists have no truth within them, so how can they ever be right? They make up their own rules and beliefs as they go along in life.
You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and he stood not in the truth; because truth is not in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof. John 8:44 .
loverofgoodmusic23 1 year ago
@ryanneglect -Did it ever cross your feeble mind that if it wasn't for "Hetrosexual" relationships meaning like your parents had-YOU would never have been born, neither would all the other six point eight billion have been born. Ponder that for awhile!
But as long as you have the breath of life in you, it's not too late for your redemption.
loverofgoodmusic23 1 year ago
@loverofgoodmusic23 us atheists do not make anything up. infact, you're the one playing make believe. we don't spread lies of an eternity of hell, or heaven either. we know that this life is the only life there is. you live, you die.. like a tree or a flower. your threats of hell mean nothing to us, because we know hell is only an idea created by man. by the human brain. we are merely animals walking this earth. You can have your fairy tale, but don't accuse us of lacking truth.
ryanneglect 1 year ago
@ryanneglect yes you do fag, atheistism is as much a religion as islam.
AntaresInScorpius 1 year ago
@AntaresInScorpius fag? are you calling me a homosexual? lol, because i'm not. and even if i was, your insults mean nothing to me. it only proves your stupidity. atheism* is far from a "religion". let's define religion: a strong belief in a supernatural power or powers that control human destiny - now let's define atheism: a lack of belief in the existence of God or gods.
ryanneglect 1 year ago 3
@ryanneglect -Simply humble yourself, ask God to show you His truth and pray the Holy Rosary. With time you will see a shining new person, one who will be on the path to eternal life!
loverofgoodmusic23 1 year ago
@loverofgoodmusic23 atheists have no truth? you think you are a better person because you suffer from the delusion of an invisible man in the sky? written in a book by ancient tribesmen who lacked the knowledge we have today. this is 2010 my friend, and you are still too ignorant to open your mind. it is 100% fact that we evolved from primates. approving of homosexuality doesn't mean there won't be any heterosexuals left to pro create. you are the one with a feeble mind.
ryanneglect 1 year ago
Its about time you all got an education and learnt the facts about the bible and stop talkin shit about the way you believe it ! you all seem so stupid because of your narrow way of thinkin its unbelievable. The Bible is so full of truth most people run scared and talk the crap as you all seem to be doin.
1THARNEY 11 months ago
@1THARNEY i have an education. education has nothing to do with religious beliefs or lack their of. the bible is bullshit! (in my opinion). you're narrow thinking, not me. i've considered all options fairly and have come to the conclusion that god does not exist. if you were born in a different part of the world, you would believe in a different god all together. there are thousands of "gods" in the world. it's very ignorant of you to claim that YOUR god is THE god.
ryanneglect 11 months ago 2
@ryanneglect Totally agree with you. If there is ONE GOD he is not a very nice person.
skipper8257 10 months ago
@skipper8257 thank you for the comment :) it's true. he isn't a very nice person at all!!
ryanneglect 10 months ago
@ryanneglect You have a right to that opinion! But, many scientists believe in some sort of intelligent engineer, or call it a God. Because all matter is made from "identical atoms" the point being, how are the same atoms, made to become flesh, blood, steel, wood, stone, etc.? This is a fact! So, before you give up on a Greater Force, or what some people call God, the Master engineer, yo should think about this! Until we can force atoms to behave a certain way, we must zip it!! Peace!
geetarnut 9 months ago
@1THARNEY I agree with you! But you can't force people to see what is around them! Just pray for them, and us too!

@1RomanticSoul Hey remember Richard Pennyman aka "Little Richard" he didn't hide the fact he was a homosexual

@1RomanticSoul Brokeback Mountain was "snubbed" because Crash was a better movie.
clevelandphil 9 months ago
@clevelandphil ~ You're entitled to your Opinion but that was not the opinion of most critics or of most people that saw both films...
Over 45% of Academy Voters (All Academy Members can vote for Best Picture) refuse to even go to "Free" screenings to watch Brokeback Mountain because of the Movie's Theme..
As liberal & as Tolerant Hollywood "PRETENDS" to be it's still under the control of the intolerant Homophobes just like SAG(Union)..I'm a member so I should know!!
1RomanticSoul 9 months ago
@1RomanticSoul Brokeback put me to sleep. Crash did not. If gays don't like SAG, maybe they could form a new organization for gay actors. The Film Actors Guild. Because gays make films, not movies.

@1RomanticSoul If you are so sure of yourself then explain how and why Midnight Cowboy (1969) walked away with so many Oscars???!!!
melodyangel1 8 months ago
@melodyangel1 ~ Midnight Cowboy was NOT a Film about a Love Relationship between 2 Men.....
It's theme was about a Male Prostitude that went with men & women for MONEY only....
Entirely different script & theme....
Jon Voight played a Male Hustler & there was no Love relationship in the Film ..
Just a friendship between Jon & Dustin Hoffman...
1RomanticSoul 8 months ago
@1RomanticSoul , Brokeback mountain was just a crap movie, Just because it had a homosexual theme does not make it relevent.
