you know it is my theory that despite what the song proposes that the Master would let the Doctor live. partially out of a desire to make him go on suffering but partially i think because he doesn't really know what the hell he'd do with his life without the Doctor in it. also i think theres this complex relationship as they had a friendship which went sour

(Kismesis is a relationship in which two parties hate each other, but can't live without each other. This one is seems to be rather parasitic, The Doctor gains nothing from this relationship and The Master needs him.)

@safranek115 I think the Doctor does sort of get something out of it. i think he still holds out a tiny bit of hope that one day he and the master could be friends again and truth be told if the Doctor and the master hadn't been rivals and pushed each other as far as they have the Doctor would arguably not be as capable a hero as he is. by the same token the master wouldn't be as good a villain. i think thier rivalry and battle is however destined to go on forever

If you look at the master over time you can tell he was slowly going insane, Delgado, Pratt and Beevers played creepy and menacing masters, Ainley played a campy but still menacing master then Roberts and Simm went all out on the flamboyance. Jacobi was a bit of an odd one out though, still he was only the master for 2 minutes so it's hard to say.

The reason why is that the episode overran by about 6 minutes. They got special permission from the BBC to allow extra time in the schedule, but it still had to be edited down for overseas sales. A few other scenes got the chop too.
