Mendelssohn is the greatest of the B composers. He never matured from his youth.
The Octet, and his Shakespeare music, and the Violin Concerto are probably his greatest works. His choral music is too under the influence of Bach and Handel to be innovative. And his ideas are never top drawer.
Bravo. Perfect tempo. Yes, the tempo is fast, but IMO that is as it ought be. So many conductors allow the brilliant 'Italian' symphony to be dragged until it is a bloody, virtually unrecognisable gob, suitable only for putting one to sleep. Well done, Herr Hartung.
aren't they? but it kinda makes sense, it's like a band, you put the deepest loudest instruments in the middle in front of the percussion to blast the sound out at the audience, it works
Wonderful image and audio quality, in addition to one of masterpieces of Mendelssohn, and the marvelous performance of the Cologne Philarmonic Orchestra. Bravo
This is an amazing version of a brilliant symphony. The orchestra I go to played this a few months back and I think myslef and the rest of the woodwind section would have lynched our conductor if we had gone at that speed!
The Hebrides/Fingal's Cave became one of the greatest orchestral showpieces. And about my previous comment; the Italian isn't underrated; the other symphonies are. The Italian was recorded by Toscanini, Karajan, Bernstein and many others. I have the Toscanini and the Bernstein.
prachtig!!!

Hard to believe that Mendelssohn was never satisfied with this piece and never had it published in his lifetime. It couldn't be more perfect.

Most likely, the russian way of arranging an orchestra. For me, it is better than the usual dispostion we know.

Ispirata dal suo viaggio presso le città Italiane :) Denominata "l'italiana" per questa ragione.

Mendelssohn IMHO, is truly one of the most underrated of the great composers.

His symphonies are. His Words without Songs and his Violin Concerto is a cornerstone of the repertoire.
