  • Used to play this on a Tandy 1000HX

    aaaahhh Moonlight Sonata

  • Comment removed

  • was this on 5/14 inch floppy disk

  • @Gamexrakeem

For the PC it was. Amiga and IIGS versions were on 3.5 inch disks

  • I played this a lot as a kid. Never made it past the third level.

  • I'm really surprised you haven't done a review of the PSN/PS3 remake! It basically did everything you asked for, while remaining faithful to the original.

  • i got this game on my famicom

  • we need more MS DOS game reviews!

  • lol @ the part where he crumbles to a steaming pile of junk metal

  • Wow! Memories of playing countless hours on this back in the late 80son my Tandy PC. Thanks for the upload ;-)

  • i love this game specialy the psp version is epic

  • @dogeymon This review was made before that game was released, so he had no way of knowing about a remake.

  • JESUSCHRIST..!! THEXDER..! I USED TO PLAY THIS IN PERU...!! WHEN I WAS A SMALL KID. THANX FOR UPLOAD THIS. ;)

  • Does this guy know about Thexder Neo, the sequel on PSP/PS3?

  • "Thexder's feet are very sensitive" :) Great review, probably my all time favorite game right here. I have some videos of it as well. Be sure to check em out if you get a chance.

  • see entire edition with this specific film right here at avatz..net change .. to .

  • CHECK THIS THEXDER REMAKE OUT!!!...

    youtube.com/watch?v=lnA8Kf-KVbs

Graphics are amazing yet the level are IDENTICAL!!

  • i loved this game. thanks for the review

  • Somehow stumbled across this vid after about 20 years or so. Used to play it as a kid, never got very far, I thought it was ridiculously difficult! Also it's frustrating that you can't aim with your laser. Oh well, good times still. :)

  • Classic Game Room should at least go and Review a Few More MS DOS Games. This is the only Review where he's ever Done a DOS Game.

  • i wish i had this

  • THEXDER AND SILPHEED ROCKS!!!!

  • This game played best on a Tandy with the Tandy 3 voice sound hardware...

  • Dude, this game was remade. I played the demo of it on the PC back in the late 1990's. It was just as you say, pretty much the same thing: A sidescroller game, but with more weapons, a Tank mode, and backgrounds!

The last thing I remember seeing it on was a demo CD with 299 other games...But it's only on the Windows 1998 computer, which is locked up somewhere back at mum's house.

  • I hope the guys on GOG.com set their eyes on this one. Too bad Sierra (license holder) is currently not one of their affiliates. Lame :(

  • the music fading in at the very end was hauntingly good...i'm surprised. great editing my friend.

  • Agreed! Remake this thing NOW!

  • @tarview They Already Remade This Game 2 Times Man. Thexder 95 For Windows 95 By Sierra And Synergistic Software, And The Latest Remake Thexder Neo By Gust And Square Enix (Formerly Squaresoft) THEY SHOULD REMAKE THEXDER 2!

  • 5.1/4 floppy !!! Oh my God !!! Fantastic !!!

  • The PSN remake is OK

  • the tandy had a 3 channel sound system, not like the single of the ibm pc... sounded much better than this!!!

  • i love the hidden parts. and you have to time your autoaim to not use it when it's not hitting anything

  • i always wondered what the title screen was. what are the red and blue lights? the cave entrance or something below the two red lights? those three other holes or something? and something else at the bottom right???

  • @matthewdoucette i've beat this game actually... on my tandy 1000 sx. 16 stages, and it repeats. the last stages are rocky stage levels.

  • The lack of a save game was really a problem for me. I ended up finishing the game by hacking it. Each time i'd finish a level, i'd back up the file that defined it, and then copy over the file that defined the first (easy) level. That way, if I died, I could just sail through the first level umpteen times until I could play the next one.

  • hehe THEXDER NEO ps3 (remake) watch?v=lnA8Kf-KVbs

  • Mark: you should just use the internal record feature inside DosBox. I know you are opposed to emulators, but come on! Then you could use your real sound card.

  • possibly the best video editting you've ever done

  • You should review the remake that was release as a dlc on the PSN, i think is called Thexder Neo, i played the demo and it was cool and the full game is very cheap, i didnt buy it because i dont like thexder too much, but the remake looks awesome.

  • 1982 TheSuperDimensionFortressMacross

    1984 Transformers

    1985 Thexder

  • This game was gorgeous on the GS. Polished graphics, good sound, a great musical score. Can't find it on YouTube, but if you could see it the way it was meant to be, I'm sure it'd blow your flunkin' mind.

  • That's crazy that they did release it on modern consoles as DLC after this video. O_o

  • Thexder 95 was one of the best games ever made.

  • there IS a thexder remake. :)

  • Thexder, Firehawk, and Thexder Neo all are downright awesome. :) I didn't really play much of Thexder 95 though.

Hopefully if enough of us buy Thexder Neo, they'll make Firehawk Neo. We can only hope. :P

  • omg pro game was like 5 when i played but i think i played the one that came out around when win 95 was released

  • i was like 10 years old or younger when i first played this on apple II gs im 25 now

  • first game on my first computer. a tandy 1000 ex. tandy 3 voice sound was great.

  • Oh, and if anyone is interested in this game, If you have a PS3, get the PS3 version as it includes online play and the original 8-Bit game as well, and I have been told the PSP version does not offer either of these two extras.

  • Mark! Review Thexder Neo on PS3/PSP! It would be interesting to know what you think about the remake.

  • I used to play this game a lot as a kid, and I loved it. I thought it was incredibly scary at the time, as you could be overwhelmed with walls of enemies any time. I doubt any new players to the game would get the same feeling of fear though, and while the PS3/PSP remake looks very interesting it does not look like they managed to capture the athmosphere of the game (I won't blame it for not being scary though, it's understandable that it's hard to make scary 2D action games nowadays).

  • its been released on PSN as a PS3 remake

  • Cross Blaim on MSX??

Can someone give me a link so I can see the game?

Thexder Neo for 8 Euro's is cool..

    Nice Job Square Enix..

When do you make a remake of Thexder II wich is much better..

I played all the 2 versions of the game on MSX...

The sound there is the coolest of all versions..

    Grtz Jan

  • Thexder for the PS3 came out today for 10 dollars I bought and am loving it. Mark needs to sue for coming up with the Thexder remake idea lol.

  • I KNEW IT!!!! they remade this game on the PSP its a PSP minis game!!! called thexder Neo

  • Thexder neo is now on pan for download $10 I think

  • Did you play CROSS BLAIM on MSX?

It's some how similar to thexder in concept, but it has a lot of complicated puzzles.

Anyhow, thanks for bringing back my old memories.

  • Cross Blaim ion the msx s a very good shooter and has indeed some similarities with Thexder.

  • I played on MSX when I was a child..... very nice!!! unforgettable

  • In 2009, it was reported that Square Enix sent an application to the ESRB to receive a rating for a game titled "THEXDER NEO".[4] Later that year, the game's existence was confirmed by Square Enix through an announcement at the 2009 Tokyo Game Show.[5] THEXDER NEO is a complete rework of the original PC game from 1985.[6] It was released worldwide on the Playstion Network on October 1, 2009 as a download for the PSP.

  • Seems it was remade, you're just not playing it since you didn't buy a PSP because you wanted a DS rather than a portable playstation 1 with games you play on a big console, but crappier.

  • he has a psp

  • I was kinda referring to myself and any other rational person :v

  • @Makron5 actually the psp is more like a portable dreamcast with games that woul only work on next gen consoles that they try to squish into the system's memory.

  • @Makron5 there is a ps3/360 sequal to neo announced to be released spring 2010.

  • I only have a PC and a DS though.

  • I don't know what it is with Thexder, it should be shit, but it's the most awesome thing.

  • "Thexder's feet are very sensitive"

    Ha!

  • Great review. I grew up playing Thexder on the Apple IIGS which has much better sound. Check it out here: /watch?v=njOl5BaIOFk

  • I grew up with it on the Tandy 2000.

  • I just played Thexder Neo for the PSP it's awsome the only thing different is the music and the graphics.

  • There is one or two thexder sequels but probably the best one would be on the download only one on the PSP.

  • The sad thing about Thexder NEO--oh, it kicks butt, is that it is a remake of the MSX version of Thexder, not the PC version. How is that different? Well, the location of secrets are different on the MSX vs. the PC as well as there are slight differences in the maps.

Take Level 2, there is a giant energy wall halfway through... on the PC. On the MSX, there was not. Little minor things. Either way, Thexder NEO is awesome.

  • THEXDER NEOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • theres a remake for thexder neo on psp make a review!

  • i think mark owes it to himself to do a review op the psp thexder neo, right..

  • After watching the review I must say Square-Enix did the remake exactly as the author wanted, even though in 3D :]

  • this review makes me go get thexder neo for psp

  • Go get it dude, i got mine the day it was released. It's all a Thexder remake should be, very faithfull :]

  • Reason why i like this game so much as a kid (and now) was it was like playing a veritech

  • Thexder Neo getting a PSP release through PSN. :)

  • It's actually in the PSN store right now.

  • I had the Tandy version of this - 'twas quite a bit better, it had multi-channel sound, allowing for decent music.

There IS some variety on the later levels - eventually, it starts you through these really evil red-cave levels with fire bats and such. Never could get past those.

The lack of a save function on the PC version was pretty much fatal for this game. If DosBox ever implements a save-state feature, I may come back to it, just to see if I can actually finish it.

  • Tandy's 3 sound speaker was far better than the original PC's single. I came back to this 10 years after the fact, and I did beat it. And I thought the game was impossible. My bro beat it, but I assumed he got somewhat lucky, that it wouldn't be possible again. But, I gave it a shot, and on my first try I ran through it and beat it twice in a row, to prove it wasn't luck. You have to learn the AI and be cautious. One mistake means game over.

  • Just so you know, it just came out that they are remaking Thexder. Square Enix is doing it.

There's an article over at IGN about it. Not sure if I'm allowed to link it here, but its going to be remade for the PSP. Shouldn't be hard to find.

  • Speaking of transforming robot into jet, have you ever played "Guardian Legend" for the NES. Fantastic mix of a shmup in jet mode, and a Zelda 1 style dungeon game on robot mode. Guardian legend is definately in my top 5 NES games.

  • Ahh, Guardian Legend... That game is freakin' hard, you know. Serious props if you passed it! ;)

  • Back ion the day I had all the time ion the world to play guardian legend, and alas I never defeated it. Some doors I just could not figure out how to open. Never had a strategy guide or anything. There is one door I accidentaly opened, one where u gotta just wait in the room f or a really long time, then it opens automaticaly. no other way.

  • Guardian Legend's too damn hardcore... Jesus man, you even literally had to wait for the door to open Dx Like seriously wth were the creators thinking ._.'

  • Well done and I agree with you. A remake is MANDATORY! I won the game finally after 22 years and you have got to be perfect when you play and know the ins and outs everywhere. I'm creating my own portal for the game online as well as creating my own custom level music along with the video. I've posted a couple videos that contain these. Let me know what you think!

  • I played this on the PC back then and it was just as shown in this great review! I learned how to play the Moonlight Sonata as a result of this game. Sure the Apple IIGS version was better, but the PC version will always be the original to me. Eternal respect to Game Arts.

  • I actually had this game Apple IIGS and I believe the Apple IIGS version was THE definitive version. True Apple digitized music, better graphics and you can hear music and sound effects at the same time. Plus there was digitized speech! Man this was a great game but frustrating as hell.

  • I had the 3.5" floppy. Always loved chnaging discs since there was no hard drive.

  • ESRB says Square-Enix is bringing Thexder NEO to PSN! ZOMG!

  • God, it's amazing watching old pc reviews, i had these all on amiga and they looked and sounded so much better.

    Totally forgot about this game.

  • you sure got your wish sqare enix is looking to bring Thexder to ps3/psp

  • excellent

  • yo dude did u keep all these classic games and systems or did u buy them recently

  • It's a mix of the two. For example, he's had his Atari 7800 since he got it 20-25 years ago.

  • Turrican clone.

  • 4:20 xardion has a better box

  • 2:55 - 3:28

i feel the same way for xardion.

by the way you have to play that game!

  • I played this one in 6th grade, back in 1991, loved it. :D

  • man i remember this on my TANDY 1000 PC, yeah i got what i wanted so what, it was about 1988

  • I remember this game from when I played Sierra adventure games like Space Quest, Police Quest, Quest for Glory, etc. Never played it but it looks interesting from a retro point of view.

  • BTW, for a remake, check out Thexder 95

  • Comment removed

  • Awesome. I was wondering if we were ever going to get a review of this game.

  • there is a remake of Thexder called Thexder 95.

heard its not great though, but give it a try.

  • Wow, the sound on the PC version is really awful. I had the Apple IIgs port, and while it looks exactly the same the sound is a million times better.

  • anyone know where I can buy this game/

  • just google search it and download it.

  • Thanks for posting this good and relaxing review. Thexder was a very good game. I liked it's sequal Fire Hawk even more. Played them both on the MSX.

  • Why are you not using DOSBox?

  • 4:27 thxder has a dong o.o

  • I record my Atari 2600 reviews with magic too, how about that? It's the only way I can get a really clear signal

  • you should do a review of fallout 1,2 and tactics.

  • I second that notion! they are all avaliable in a 3 pack at most stores that sell pc games for 20 bucks!

  • Wonderful review and a real great trip to memory lane to games like Prince of Persia and DR. Riptide. To bad I never played TEXDER although I got my hands on allot of MS-DOS games. Oh and I read wikipedia and mobygames that there is an enhanced remake of the game in 95.

  • fun game, thank god it works with vista and xp.(thanks dosbox!)

  • mark, review ecco the dolphin on genesis!

  • I FOUND THIS GAME. it was in my brother in laws attic. lol

  • If you are going to review more PC games, could you add PC gaming to your console list on your homepage, so PC gamers can see all your PC game reviews like PS1 or 360 owners can?

  • why not type "PC" in the search bar of his homepage?

  • Why do only PC gamers only have to do that? I am fed up people telling me why PC gamers have to be second class citizens and do something different from the console owners!!!

  • and i'm fed up with people puting words in my mouth. it was just a suggestion, if you don't like it, don't do it. i'm only trying to help out

  • He's redoing his website, so it's happening so calm down. :P

  • Have you thought of DOSBox for playing and recording?

  • YAAAAA! Another PC game review!

  • what kind of Computer?

  • IBM ps/2

  • did i hear you say not much background variation? lmao! cant get less variation than one background - black. Haha

  • i want this to be remade, now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I would never have guessed that you're recording this from screen using a camera, look really smooth, and no scanlines and what not. BTW I did have this game, japanese version of it for Dendy (post-soviet version of NES) don't remember if I liked it or notm though.

  • haha dendy.... good times....

  • Can you get me some of that magic used for recording games, that would be very helpful :-)

  • Gun Metal is a remake of this game

  • Have you ever reviewed Turrican on A500

  • just tried this online... didn't love it. Could do with a remake it's the physics mainly. Bionic Commando Rearmed and Prince of Persia Classic both just feel better than the originals. Hope someone will remake this... can't see it happening though.

  • Great more PC stuff!!

  • One of the best reviews Mark has ever done.

I remember trying to play this game, along with Ultima V and Captain Comic on the PCs in the UNLV computer lab all the time, at the expense of my homework. The damn admins would keep finding the game files and deleting them from the hard drives (100 MB back then, if you can believe that, and they were among the largest on the market at the time).

I sucked at controlling this, but I beat Captain Comic and that was HARD.

  • i went to unlv

  • Wow, that game looks awesome actually. :D

  • I have a few games left on 3 1/2 floppies. They're still fun to play and much more challenging than some new games on the market.

  • i think all older games are more challenging than newer ones cos since i grew up with tekken and soulcaliber i suck at street fighter

  • Trust me its wat all the hot people play now a days

  • yeah 02

  • I think they should remake Lego Rock Raders

  • but the original sucked enough

  • It lags a lot but other than that i like the game.

  • Woah, I remember this game... I used to play it on my parents Tandy 1000 TL (I think it was a TL?) when I was a kid. Though I could never remember what the name of this game was called, and couldn't ever find it again. I always thought it was a Transformers licensed game. Great game though.

  • Old school PC game.. Sooo Cool. Thanks for the review!!

  • Posting twice, because I found there's a sequel or a remake of Thexder on MSX called Fire Hawk

  • It is a sequel, available on PC and MSX.

  • Oh sensitive feet Thexder, we love you.

  • How did you manage to run this on your pc?

Does your computer actually has a 3.5 floppy disk drive?

  • A 5.25 disk drive is required to be exact

  • He probably used a External USB 5.25 drive. I don't know.

  • Also if you use DosBOX to run this you get full sound.

  • There was a sequel called Firehawk.

  • Hey... Thexder have a remake for Windows 95

  • i promise you i shall buy the rights and remake it for 360 PS3 a variation for DS ahd PSP

  • Eh, really? Contact me then, i'll apply for your team.

  • I swear I have been trying to find this game for the past 10 years. Nice.

And yes, fucking kickass box art.

  • nice, review

  • damn i love this song

  • mangos

  • this game was also on a console...and yes is fucking hard, really challenging game--

  • This game looks fun, and its awesome that you are doing some old school PC games, those are some of the best.

And I noticed you mentioned Bionic Commando Rearmed in this review. So will you review the new Bionic Commando soon?

  • he already has :)

  • I haven't seen it.. And I watch his videos every day basically.

  • I downloaded Bionic Commando Rearmed for my PS3. If you haven't played it, then play it because it is a great remake.

  • Oh man, this takes me back. I used to play this all the time on my old Franklin PC-8000. PC games used to be so much fun before they got all fancy with CD-ROMs and sound cards and such...

  • nice

  • If he's gonna do old PC games, may I suggest Oregon Trail.

  • YOU HAVE DIED OF DYSENTERY

  • WIN. It has to be on the Apple IIe and only with the green-on-black monochrome screen.

  • Bangaio's ancestor.
