Why didn't you guys set the choke before you cranked it? Remember, carbureted engines "start" differently; hit the gas 2 or 3 times, go off to on for 5 seconds, shut off, repeat about 2 or 3 times, then start it. I had a 1985 Lincoln Town Car that I used that trick to start, and I NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS. It sounds like you guys flooded this poor Volvo on purpose......
But they did Volvo 340 diesel, that was 1.6l unit and _very_ slow.
I have never had car that had failed starting if there just have been enough power in battery. If all basics are in good condition engine will start even there will be -35C :)
Yep, the 340's had Renault engines. And most Volvo fanatics would agree thad the Holland Volvos were never real Volvos, but DAF's. The quality in these cars wasn't even close to the real Swedish Volvos.
Thats untrue. The Car was planned as a Daf but Volvo made the car. The 1.4 engine is from Renault. But Volvo only used the best quality engines. I have a Volvo 340 (later model than 343) with 192.000km and its a really good car. I know Volvo 343's on Liquid Petrol Gas over 200.000kms with no problems.
I own a Vauxhall Corsa and it started first time when it was -15C! In fact it always starts first time cos it's RELIABLE and MAINTAINED! This Volvo on the other hand, well....
It sounds like a skoda starting from cold???

A fresh battery and it would have gone - it tried SO HARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The car's problem isn't that it's old. It's just a very cold diesel that needs nothing more than some glow plugs or a pre-heater.
No diesel likes the cold. Some are more sensitive than others.

Diesel!! lol, Volvo never made this model with diesel engines.
Jobergg 4 years ago
Fair enough. Saw the temperature specification and figured it must be a diesel.
Nevermind. Thought it was a 240 I guess.
