Unreal engine wins it all the way. It does everything better except it's tools for creating vast landscapes(which it can do, just not as easily). Unreal is focused more on closed environments. A lot of people are saying it's better for futuristic games, this is total BS. Just because people use the unreal engine to make sci-fi games doesn't mean thats all it can do. There are many realistic games on the unreal engine, they just sucked, not because of the engine, but because of the developers.

cry engine 3 is more of a compatibility and efficiency upgrade, mainly so that it may run on consoles. although im sure it will have a graphic update as well, at least for the pc, it probably wont be much.

actually no. It is upgraded on the pc, it has a few new features like deferred lighting, incredible physics, facial animation, true building destructibility (the walls break this time, no primitively welded scraps of metal simply coming apart) and the like.

Sadly though, the console versions suck...so hard. It doesn't even have subsurface scattering, and now cryshit 2 doesn't even take place in the jungle cuz of this damn console compatibility shit.

dude just because unreal made the unreal engine doesn't mean u can only make futuristic games. the unreal engine is a step ahead of all engines. with its shader detail and 3d effects and its used by hundreds of studios making all different kinds of games.

they just released a newer version of the engine which puts it well ahead of the competition

Hard to say which is better. Do you prefer the spacey look of Unreal or the more realistic look of farcry? But even Unreal can be made to look more realistic. Look at America's Army.

The more important question is which engine is easiest to work with? The Unreal engine comes with very good tools that can get you up and running with your own custom maps in only hours. Can this be done with Farcry? I don't care how good the engine is if I can't utilize it in my projects.

Gears of War is a better example of unreal engine's potential.

I'd say that Unreal Engine is far better than cry-engine. Sure you can get better results from cry-engine, but you need all the latest stuff to play it at that high graphics. Unreal Engine has a smart solution which makes it playable on most computers, so I find that one to be a winner.

if you are trying to say the fact that unreal engine is better as it can run on a much lower spec, take a look at the source engine. much larger draw distances, and although its a bit dated, its still made to run exceptionally well. crysis is an enthuasiasts game, and the cryengine is an enthusiasts engine. you cant really compare the two as unreal engine has terrible draw distances and loading times, however as you say, crysis takes a lot of power and specs. every engine has a weak spot, :)

I personally like the set of games Unreal engine has created, Gears of War, Bioshock, of course UT3, medal of honor, and army of two. Another good point towards unreal engine is that it can make movies as well. If anyone is familiar with the children's show "Lazytown" it was made with Unreal engine, no joke. Check the site for confirmation. HOWEVER, when it comes to graphics, CryEngine 2 is the best only second to the MegaTexturing of Id Tech 5, which is creating the graphics powerhouse RAGE.

The thing about Cry-engine, is it feels too nerf gun, and not enough shotgun. It looks nice, but firing weapons feels like your shooting nerf darts. It also has some texture popping but UE has that also. Overall Cryengine is one of the best out there right now, but fanboys need to get off their asses, and show some respect for the other stuff.

I DO like UE's skin better. Crysis's skin looks too flat. In fact, a lot of Cryengine's stuff looks REALLY flat. That's what happens when you use too much ambient lighting. All definite light sources dissapear.

That's not the engine's fault though.... It's the artist's fault. Huh. Unless you can get an identacle test map to run on both engines, theres to way to compare.

Crysis's motion blur kicks everyone else's ASS. MB is a very important feature when dealing with fast paced games, and it helps when EVERYTHING has MB, and not just camera movement.

I turn it down just enough to be noticable, but not impare gameplay. Besides, MB adds a nice trail to fast moving objects. A grenade with motion blur is easier to follow because there's basically a line following it everywhere. Without MB it just seeps to majically teleport to it's destination. You can't rely compare the 2. Both are good on their own ways.

The Unreal Engine 3 was made for performance and rely gory games and the Cry Engine 2 was made for outstanding DX10 graphics and well pretty much boring games.

I one can run UT3 on my 7600 GS (Overclocked to 625 Core Clock and 475 Memory clock) on 1280 x 1024 every detail set to max with VSync off and Crysis berly on 800 x 600 with details set to medium/low.

in my opinion Cry-engine is too plastic, i dont feel these weapons shooting, but in fact, it is able to show huge areas, is great for games like Crysis, but needs very tough computer... Its hrard to compare these both, each has adventages... both are good for me.

for an effective comparision you should have place both images side to side (no matter the "pressure" effect) and try to find similar situations.

All we can say is the the landscape in CryEngine is active whereas the Unreal one is "stuck"... but it's understandable for a "full metal planet" like it.
