They are both difference styles but Steve Vai kept improving years after years, new ideas, new techniques. On the other hand, EVH seemed to drop out after the glorious 80's. No doubts, EVH has earned his status, but Steve Vai is the one actively making rock and roll better everyday! It's him that put instrumental solo matters in Grammy.

good idea yes, but ibanez is what Vai endorses for one, plus the neck radius is different,

in my opinion yes a fender sounds better but an ibanez frets easier, and fender doesn't make many 7 strings last i checked which is wat he was playing on this one >.>

im not a ibanes fan at all but they do what the're made for so they're not half as bad but metal doesn't sound metal throught many ibanesez unless you put allot of effect in front or behind the speaker.the cehaper sounding brands like sheckter esp perhaps jackson is great for you metal shre depends on wich one off course ibanes try's to be an alrounder,so you can't expect thing from it,it trys.megadeth would'nt have sounded as great on fenders.

seriously though SO many metal bands use ibanez guitars that it makes NO sense that you said they suck for metal. And yes neck through, set neck, or bolt on CAN be a factor, but ibanez's bolt ons still sound incredible. and metallica does NOT have a good metal sound sorry. not enough midrange.

@ShadowLancer128 I've tried many an ibanez, including a really nice 7 string jem, and I've come to the conclusion that Ibanez are great guitars, but strangely enough (and to every one of my friend's surprise) nothing has been better to play than one of the Dean guitars I have. In sound, they're all similar: fat active pickups (EMG/DiMarzio is just an opinion based thing), and alder or basswood bodies. Very nice paint job on Vai's Universe.

Dude guitar playing isn't all about how many licks you know. I went to the VH concert to and it was badass. Ed's solo wasn't as good as it used to be back in the beginning of the tour, but it is now. Vai doesn't own VH. You do know Ed has performed with Alan Holdsworth and that guy can DESTROY Vai technically. The fact is Ed was extremely influential and has written dozens of great songs that millions of people love. Vai hasn't and that pisses you off. By the way I can play both of their licks.
