I have a couple of old guitars and this song speaks to me in many ways. I always wonder how many people owned the guitars before I did...what songs were played on them. I'm putting a note in the cases that says who I am, the years I owned them, the songs I played on them. Hopefully the list will follow the guitars over the years after I have 'taken care of them for a while' and others will add to the list and create a history for these old war horses.
I just now read, and gained immediate adoration for this concept you described for honouring, preserving & consolidating the heritage, history & legacy of these beloved, mystically endowed & spirit-bound companions of we souljahs...
I think I will like to converse & delve more with you, in time.
My husband was a guitar player and this song makes me think of him! He died in 2007! I have his old guitar he had when we meant in 83! No strings, the bridge needs work and the case was burnt from him putting it on a stove and leaning back and turning the stove on! I wouldn't trade it for anything!
The guitar is a metaphor at times, for us just plain workers that own a guitar know how to read strum the chords that are printed above the measure ahhh where am I going with this? This song is about life, is only ours for a while to keep like my guitar, I’ve had mine since the 1960’s played many a Neil song on it Oh yeah been around many a year up and down this country road just as my life still strum those chords yeah I agree this song has many meanings just like our lives Cooool song thanks
I just had my les paul studio stolen and this was just what I needed to hear :) thank you for posting this. I will miss you forever May, thank you for letting me be your player.
My mom has been gone almost 30 years now, and when I hear this song, I feel like I can be with her again for a little while, knowing how much she listened to 'this old guitar' when it was Hank's. I love this song. Playing it for you tonight, Mom!
The "Old Guitar," Neil is referring to in this song happens to be Hank Williams' 1941 Martin, which came to Neil through a few other hands, and is used to play this song and can be seen in Neil's, "Heart Of Gold," performance at "The Ryman Auditorium," in Nashville.
This song always cheers me up when I'm upset.

Isn't this song originally written as a country tradition to give a guitar to another musician that the musician thinks highly of.

Very similar to 'Harvest Moon' - a song I could play over and over again ....
