You are supposed to kill the horse in a battle, they are large animals, and if not mounted by a friendly rider, they can easily stomp the wounded and kill those who would have survived. Also, horse's body mass adds to the pushing force and can demolish its way through the infantry. Its not disgraceful or cheap to kill a horse which is charging at you in a battle. However its graceful and noble to stop enemy cavalry from killing

@Titanwriter Watch the battle of Stirling in Braveheart. Infantry are at a serious disadvantage against mounted troops. The great equalizer was using the spear in mass to break charges and dismount the rider.
