I'm a Brit. I don't wish to appear disrespectful here, but would someone mind explaining to me the significance of this event? It's clear it's a big deal. I'd just like to understand why. Thanks
@6anatolyy4 At mid-season, one team (the NY Giants) were so far back in the standings that no one thought they had a shot at the championship. But then they won 50 of their last 62 games to tie the Dodgers at the end of the season. The two teams then played a three-game playoff, which the Giants won on the home run in the video. Years later, it was revealed that the Giants had cheated all throughout the second half of the season, but at the time it seemed like they had pulled off a real miracle.
Yeah, the Giants won the pennant... because they cheated. They finished the season 50-12 after implementing a scheme where someone sitting in the bleachers would relay the opposing pitchers' signals to the batter. The players even admitted to doing this in 2001.
That's completely not true. Go back to the Greenberg Tigers in the 40s (in his bio he talks about how they stole signs all year) to say nothing of one John J McGraw of the New York Baseball Giants.
@DJX187.... pretty sure the mantra "the giant's win the pennant" gave it away....if you know baseball history you would have known that there was a) no playoffs like we see them now and b) giants and the dodgers have always played in the same division....in no way a world series matchup...
@david1986..., so in 1903 baseball had two devisions like football.... They had the national league and american league..,, in 1903 they callenged eachother..,, it progressd from there...,
@DJX187..... Yeah.... Never mention of a world series.... Only that it was a histoic come back to win "THE PENNANT"..... Learn baseballl history please....
@davd1986 dont listen to them ahaha it's actually because in 1903, they wanted to see who the best baseball team was..so they got the best team of the National League, the Pittsburgh Pirates, to play the best team of the American League, Boston Americans (Red Sox). And it was such a huge deal that they called it the "World's Series"..Boston ended up winning and they continued the World Series every year since except for 1904 and 1994 because of the strike in 1994 and the New York Giants refusin
THE GIANTS WON THE PENNANT! THE GIANTS WON THE PENNANT! THE GIANTS WON THE PENNANT! THE GIANTS WON THE PENNANT! THE GIANTS WON THE PENNANT! THE GIANTS WON THE PENNANT!
@teddsman Its almost fake..Right before the pitch, they switch to a fan and hes pumping his arm, and then the action keeps going to the fan shots while the play is still live, almost as if this was put together after the fact... Was this broadcast live this way?? Why would you swap over to fan reaction shots while the play is still developing? Thats like if you are watching "the catch" and as Montana is rolling out and being rushed, they swap over to fan shots. Silly...
I think Bill Mazeroski's walkoff in the bottom of the ninth in game 7 of the actual WORLD SERIES (not some lame-ass pennant bullshit), against the Yankees was a much more incredible home run.

@GGE47.... then stop watching baseball.... If you don't think 3 hours is worth your ticket then you must be paying $100 bucks for bleachers and then you are stupid...
@fleetfox84 I just about stopped watching it.I am tired of watching game after game draaaaaaag on where nothing much happens and the score is 2-1.Deep down inside I can feel it drag and drag and drag.A lot of people were complaining about it I get tired of watching pitchers shake off the catchers sign time end time again. It can be moving along and a couple of runners get on base the game comes to a screeching haltThey don't go all out to win anymore, they play not to lose.No confdence, just fear.
@GGE47...you complain about how long games go but lament for the old school ways ... The reason baseball plays the way it does isn't about money so much as baseball being a traditional sport... And by the way ball players get more money now than before but they also pay for relief pitchers.... Let them earn their keep...
When the contract between the union and owners expires,I hope they go on strike and stay out.I just can't stand today's game.It used to be for the fans Now it's all about money. The fans used to be #1,and it wasn't all about money. They went out of their way to treat the fans right.Today's game takes so much longer to play. It's not as bad as it was ,but still drags on longer than it should. It's just an inferior product and far more expensive.I'l never buy a ticket to this farce.
In today's game Ralph Terry would have pithched 5 2/3 innings and be called a great game.Maybe the 6th,possibly the 7th depending on the pitch count. Then there would have been 1 pitcher per inning with a closer.I guess it's cheaper in salaries to have a bunch of pitchers in the bullpen than position players in the dugout. It's all about money. They may let a runner have 2nd base on defensive indifference. No stolen base. They don't even take infield practice before each game.Lazy bums.It supersucks.
They also played the Yankees in the World Series. It was a series to remember as each game was exciting and came down to the bottom of the 9th with the Yankees leading 1-0.There were 2 on and 2 out with Willie McCovey at bat.Ralph Terry who gave up that homer to Mazeroski 2 years earlier was the starter and the manager left him in.Would Terry walk him to get to Willie Mays?He pitched to McCovey and hit a line drive that seemed like a hit but Bobby Richardson at 2nd made the catch and the Yankswon
I remember something similar in 1962 between the L.A.Dodgers and S.F.Giants.The Giants came from way back to tie theDodgers and force a best of three playoff for the pennant. They split the first two and in game three for the pennant the Dodgers led 4-2 going to the top of the 9th.The Giants rallied for 4 runs to take a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the 9th.The Dodgers didn't score and the Giants won the National League pennant. It has a lot more meaning than just winning a division and get screwed.
@SteelerGold1 I can see you are a Pittsburgh fan.I remember the 1960 World Series. There has been far more made over this homerun than Mazeroski's.In the 1975 World Series you hear more about Carlton Fisk's homerun to win game 6 in the bottom of the 12th than you do whoever won game 7 between the Boston Red Sox and Cincinnati Reds.
@GGE47 9the Inning, Sudden death, against the Overwhelming favorite Yankees, NEVER been done before or since makes Maz Homer the singular greatest hit in baseball History, hands down. Let me see now, WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP VS PENNANT? Hmmm, WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP takes all. Truly, not even an argument.
@SteelerGold1 One of the beauties about baseball is not always the World Series. How did the 51 Yankees feel after winning their 3rd consecutive World Series, but all people talked about was the Bobby Thompson homerun? How about game 7 of the '75 series when the most played footage was Carlton Fisk's homerun to win game 6 in 12 innings? You just don't know baseball. It always feels good to win the world series until it takes a back seat to something else.Don't even talk about today's game.
@GGE47 The people who made this film says Thompson's homerun was #1 I'll have to go along with that.I also remember all of those scheduled double headers on Sundays and a number of night games. They don't want people seeing two for the price of one. That wouldn't be right.Remember when they put up a screen to keep Cubs fans from seeing the game across the street? That became a Cubs tradition. If you can't understand what I am sayingyou will never know.It didbecome so embarrassing, they removed screen
@GGE47 I agree with most everything, but keep in mind, Fans are still talking about the 1960 Miracle in Oakland Pa. Also, keep in mind, the Pirates won 96 games that season, one less than the Yankees where the AL that season played 2nd fiddle in overall quality. Last but not least, in the May edition of Sports Illustrated, Page 37, they voted Maz home run #1 All time in terms of Importance. Thompson came in #2. Good enough for me.
@SteelerGold1 Depends on which source you want to believe. This one says Bobby Thompson.Fans today can't understand this one because they are still wondering what's all the excitement about. They haven't won the World Series yet?
@GGE47.... obviously didn't follow the giants because this was a team of homegrown players and castoffs... A bunch of guys who had never won it all, where home grown, or were picked up for nothing...
@GGE47.... teams don't "just get hot" in the playoffs in baseball... They play 162 to get there sorry if (I'm guessing your padres choked) but great starting pitching and a solid bullpen creates a winning team in the post steroid era...
@fleetfox84 They do get hot in the PLAYOFFS.and too often the worst team of the bunch gets a bunch of individual rings, after all that what it's all about.Guess what else I am not a Padres fan and the phrase choked is a childish expression that I could never understand in all sports.162 games gets you there but doesn't win the pennant like it should.Screw those g.d.pnoney playoffs. They are an illusion to too many people who get excited because their team wins some phoney piece of crap.UNREAL!!!
@GGE47.... I agree that this is amazing...it gives me the chills but you also have to understand that the giants winning the national west on the last day had as much excitement.... They may not have won the pennant but they did eventually and it was similar in that it wad a divisional race....
@fleetfox84 I didn't pay any attention to it.It wasn't even exciting and today if my team won,it would not be the same thing. It wouldn't mean near as much.A division race is not a pennant race and will never replace this. Not even the so called world series.Teams that finish 10 games out of first place have won and it is so unfair to the best teams that deserve to win.Being fair used to mean something.Today real baseball takes a backseat to money.Oh yeah, and ME getting MY ring however phoney.
@fredact.... It was so much a rivalry that the stupid dodgers changed over to the giants broadcast at that moment to hear the "doom and gloom" that never happened.....And comming back from such a deficet...
@fredact... It wasn't about who won the world series it was about the pennent... Both teams were in new York at the time and the giants were back 13 1/2 games...came back and beat the arch rival dodgers!!!!great comeback of history....hench..."the shot heard around the world"
Don't forget the context of this game. Both teams were from New York City. No one expected the Giants to win. As explained below by ClearFlow, they made up monumental ground at the last of the season, then won the pennant on the last hit.
@habdon yes the Giants won....you can hear it. And you see the whole Giants team celebrating after a Giants player hits a homerun to win the pennant which is why its called the shot heard 'round the world....It's not like people just make names for a random homerun. I'm kind of suprised you didn't figure this out after watching the video
Did the Giants win the pennant.? The announcer is kinda vague on who won. I guess in those days they were more laid back.Ill check it out in some record book than.. Thank you.Just curious on who won the pennant.
I never could understand why this HR is such a big deal. The Giants didn't even win the WS that year. I guess it's just because it is two NY teams. Otherwise, a pretty ordinary end of game.
@fredact On August 11, Brooklyn had held a 13½-game lead on the Giants, but the Giants turned around and won their next 16 games. While Brooklyn finished the season on a 26–22 clip, the Giants put together a streak almost unequalled in baseball history
@fredact winning 37 of the last 44 games, including the last seven in a row. Only a 14-inning victory over the Philadelphia Phillies, the previous year's league champions, on the last day of the regular season enabled the Dodgers to force the best-of-three-games showdown
@fredact You don't understand baseball at all.Back then, you played all year long to win the pennant. The World Series had to take a back seat to the drama and exitement of winning this pennant. They autimaticaly went to the World Series to play another New Yok team, the Yankees. It lacked the drama of this and if played today, the Yankees or Giants may not have gone because of those stupid playoffs.I don't watch that crap.Multible divisions and wildcards are not baseball, not real baseball.
@GGE47 I might add, this was a playoff bacuse the Giants and Dodgers finished in a tie for first place. They played a best of three, and split the first two and it came to the bottom of the 9th inning and it all counted as part of the regular season, since it was for the National League pennant.Far more exciting than a post season playoff with teams that don't even belong. It's just a playoff and nothing else.Today is not THE World Series or THE Pennant, just a three round playoff.Phony.
@SuperChivita99 Today's baseball is all about money. The players, the owners, the networks, the sponsers. Then all you hear is I got me my ring,I got me my ring.I got two of them.I got three of them on three different teams nya nya nya nyaa nyaa..It's not We won the pennant. We won the World SeriesIt was about the team winning, not me and my phony ring.I get sick and tired of half ass teams being called world champions.just because they get a little hot streak at the wrong time.
I never could understand why this HR is such a big deal. The Giants didn't even win the WS that year. I guess it's just because it is two NY teams. Otherwise, a pretty ordinary end of game.
@duster19.... Maybe....and I'm saying this as a giants fan... But the numbers still have an * by them...no one knows for sure when the steroids started...
@grabit1.... This still gives me chills... Top five ball players... Willie mays....satchel Paige....Joe DiMaggio....babe Ruth...and Reggie for his speed...
My grandpa was standing behind me ( i didnt know he was there)while i was watching this, that made him remeber what happend in that year.He lived in new york and he was at that ball game.He moved to SF a year after the giants moved to San Francisco.
Now it is done. Now the story ends. And there is no way to tell it. The art of fiction is dead. Reality has strangled invention. Only the utterly impossible, the inexpressibly fantastic, can ever be plausible again.
Don't feel bad for any dodger.... They switched over to the giants broadcast to hear the doom and gloom Only to catch the moat historic call of baseball
You have to really feel for Ralph Branca though. He said ti best right after the game, "I dont drink, i dont smoke, i dont philander around...why me?"
Soooo @doughart..... You know I'm right... There is always cheating in baseball...get caught and lose.... Don't get caught and win..... And beat the dodgers at that....
Yes they were stealing signs but they got away with it and won....if you can't keep signs hidden and let a team down by 13 games beat you then it's your own fault...
There was also the fact that the dodgers broadcasters switched over to the giants station to catch the doom and gloom but instead caught the most famous radio call of all time
Incidentally, they call it the shot heard 'round the world because the Armed Forces Network arranged for it to be broadcast to US military personnel around the world. It was the first such broadcast for a baseball game.
@Screenname8 Giant fans don't care how the Dodgers felt! yes of course they were very dissapointed but that's baseball The Giants in the early part of the 20th century held the postion in baseball that's been held by the Yankees for many years since I'm from NY and my Dad took me to a game at the Polo grounds to see the Giants play the Dodgers in 1957 I've since become both a Mets and Yankees fan but I always also consider myself a Giant fan I know that's baseball heresy but that's how I feel
@Johngmoore Um, no. You're completely wrong. The Giants won this pennant in 1951, and they then went on to play the New York Yankees in the World Series, a series the Yankees won in 6 games.
The Giants would win a World Series three years later, however, in 1954.
The shot heard round the world was in the 1951 NL playoff, NOT the World Series as the person who posted this video labeled it. A "Penant" is a league (National or American) championship.
I'm a Brit. I don't wish to appear disrespectful here, but would someone mind explaining to me the significance of this event? It's clear it's a big deal. I'd just like to understand why. Thanks

@GGE47...you complain about how long games go but lament for the old school ways ... The reason baseball plays the way it does isn't about money so much as baseball being a traditional sport... And by the way ball players get more money now than before but they also pay for relief pitchers.... Let them earn their keep...
fleetfox84 7 months ago
When the contract between the union and owners expires,I hope they go on strike and stay out.I just can't stand today's game.It used to be for the fans Now it's all about money. The fans used to be #1,and it wasn't all about money. They went out of their way to treat the fans right.Today's game takes so much longer to play. It's not as bad as it was ,but still drags on longer than it should. It's just an inferior product and far more expensive.I'l never buy a ticket to this farce.
GGE47 7 months ago
What was that? The Giants won the pennant?
Hockeyjeph88 7 months ago
@GGE47... yeah that game you are talking about is the clip you just watched.... Why it is called "shot heard round the world"...
fleetfox84 7 months ago
In today's game Ralph Terry would have pithched 5 2/3 innings and be called a great game.Maybe the 6th,possibly the 7th depending on the pitch count. Then there would have been 1 pitcher per inning with a closer.I guess it's cheaper in salaries to have a bunch of pitchers in the bullpen than position players in the dugout. It's all about money. They may let a runner have 2nd base on defensive indifference. No stolen base. They don't even take infield practice before each game.Lazy bums.It supersucks.
GGE47 7 months ago
They also played the Yankees in the World Series. It was a series to remember as each game was exciting and came down to the bottom of the 9th with the Yankees leading 1-0.There were 2 on and 2 out with Willie McCovey at bat.Ralph Terry who gave up that homer to Mazeroski 2 years earlier was the starter and the manager left him in.Would Terry walk him to get to Willie Mays?He pitched to McCovey and hit a line drive that seemed like a hit but Bobby Richardson at 2nd made the catch and the Yankswon
GGE47 7 months ago
I remember something similar in 1962 between the L.A.Dodgers and S.F.Giants.The Giants came from way back to tie theDodgers and force a best of three playoff for the pennant. They split the first two and in game three for the pennant the Dodgers led 4-2 going to the top of the 9th.The Giants rallied for 4 runs to take a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the 9th.The Dodgers didn't score and the Giants won the National League pennant. It has a lot more meaning than just winning a division and get screwed.

NO way can you compare Thompsons HR to win the Pennant, to Maz's Hr in the top of the 9th to win the WORLD SERIES against the YANKEES. No Comparison!
SteelerGold1 7 months ago
@SteelerGold1 I can see you are a Pittsburgh fan.I remember the 1960 World Series. There has been far more made over this homerun than Mazeroski's.In the 1975 World Series you hear more about Carlton Fisk's homerun to win game 6 in the bottom of the 12th than you do whoever won game 7 between the Boston Red Sox and Cincinnati Reds.
GGE47 7 months ago
@GGE47 9the Inning, Sudden death, against the Overwhelming favorite Yankees, NEVER been done before or since makes Maz Homer the singular greatest hit in baseball History, hands down. Let me see now, WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP VS PENNANT? Hmmm, WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP takes all. Truly, not even an argument.
Nuff Said
SteelerGold1 7 months ago
@SteelerGold1 One of the beauties about baseball is not always the World Series. How did the 51 Yankees feel after winning their 3rd consecutive World Series, but all people talked about was the Bobby Thompson homerun? How about game 7 of the '75 series when the most played footage was Carlton Fisk's homerun to win game 6 in 12 innings? You just don't know baseball. It always feels good to win the world series until it takes a back seat to something else.Don't even talk about today's game.
GGE47 7 months ago
@GGE47 The people who made this film says Thompson's homerun was #1 I'll have to go along with that.I also remember all of those scheduled double headers on Sundays and a number of night games. They don't want people seeing two for the price of one. That wouldn't be right.Remember when they put up a screen to keep Cubs fans from seeing the game across the street? That became a Cubs tradition. If you can't understand what I am sayingyou will never know.It didbecome so embarrassing, they removed screen
GGE47 7 months ago
@GGE47 I agree with most everything, but keep in mind, Fans are still talking about the 1960 Miracle in Oakland Pa. Also, keep in mind, the Pirates won 96 games that season, one less than the Yankees where the AL that season played 2nd fiddle in overall quality. Last but not least, in the May edition of Sports Illustrated, Page 37, they voted Maz home run #1 All time in terms of Importance. Thompson came in #2. Good enough for me.
SteelerGold1 7 months ago
@SteelerGold1 Depends on which source you want to believe. This one says Bobby Thompson.Fans today can't understand this one because they are still wondering what's all the excitement about. They haven't won the World Series yet?
GGE47 7 months ago
I'm a diehard giants fan and I just can't believe the giants never won the world series with Barry bonds yet they could win with a bunch of misfits.

@GGE47.... obviously didn't follow the giants because this was a team of homegrown players and castoffs... A bunch of guys who had never won it all, where home grown, or were picked up for nothing...
fleetfox84 7 months ago
@fleetfox84 They won it three years later, and then swept the Cleveland Indians with 111 wins four straight in the true blue World Series.

Yes, the Giants did win the pennant, this was after being down 13.5 games in mid-August to the Dodgers.

@GGE47.... teams don't "just get hot" in the playoffs in baseball... They play 162 to get there sorry if (I'm guessing your padres choked) but great starting pitching and a solid bullpen creates a winning team in the post steroid era...
fleetfox84 7 months ago
@fleetfox84 They do get hot in the PLAYOFFS.and too often the worst team of the bunch gets a bunch of individual rings, after all that what it's all about.Guess what else I am not a Padres fan and the phrase choked is a childish expression that I could never understand in all sports.162 games gets you there but doesn't win the pennant like it should.Screw those g.d.pnoney playoffs. They are an illusion to too many people who get excited because their team wins some phoney piece of crap.UNREAL!!!
GGE47 7 months ago
.......cool!:)
lampsidetable1 7 months ago
@GGE47.... I agree that this is amazing...it gives me the chills but you also have to understand that the giants winning the national west on the last day had as much excitement.... They may not have won the pennant but they did eventually and it was similar in that it wad a divisional race....
fleetfox84 7 months ago
@fleetfox84 I didn't pay any attention to it.It wasn't even exciting and today if my team won,it would not be the same thing. It wouldn't mean near as much.A division race is not a pennant race and will never replace this. Not even the so called world series.Teams that finish 10 games out of first place have won and it is so unfair to the best teams that deserve to win.Being fair used to mean something.Today real baseball takes a backseat to money.Oh yeah, and ME getting MY ring however phoney.

fleetfox84 8 months ago
@fredact... It wasn't about who won the world series it was about the pennent... Both teams were in new York at the time and the giants were back 13 1/2 games...came back and beat the arch rival dodgers!!!!great comeback of history....hench..."the shot heard around the world"
fleetfox84 8 months ago
My dad was a security guard at The Polo Grounds.
Don't forget the context of this game. Both teams were from New York City. No one expected the Giants to win. As explained below by ClearFlow, they made up monumental ground at the last of the season, then won the pennant on the last hit.
noclouds111 8 months ago
@habdon yes the Giants won....you can hear it. And you see the whole Giants team celebrating after a Giants player hits a homerun to win the pennant which is why its called the shot heard 'round the world....It's not like people just make names for a random homerun. I'm kind of suprised you didn't figure this out after watching the video

I never could understand why this HR is such a big deal. The Giants didn't even win the WS that year. I guess it's just because it is two NY teams. Otherwise, a pretty ordinary end of game.
fredact 8 months ago
@fredact On August 11, Brooklyn had held a 13½-game lead on the Giants, but the Giants turned around and won their next 16 games. While Brooklyn finished the season on a 26–22 clip, the Giants put together a streak almost unequalled in baseball history
ClearFlowLVL100 8 months ago
@fredact winning 37 of the last 44 games, including the last seven in a row. Only a 14-inning victory over the Philadelphia Phillies, the previous year's league champions, on the last day of the regular season enabled the Dodgers to force the best-of-three-games showdown
ClearFlowLVL100 8 months ago
@fredact You don't understand baseball at all.Back then, you played all year long to win the pennant. The World Series had to take a back seat to the drama and exitement of winning this pennant. They autimaticaly went to the World Series to play another New Yok team, the Yankees. It lacked the drama of this and if played today, the Yankees or Giants may not have gone because of those stupid playoffs.I don't watch that crap.Multible divisions and wildcards are not baseball, not real baseball.
GGE47 8 months ago
@GGE47 I might add, this was a playoff bacuse the Giants and Dodgers finished in a tie for first place. They played a best of three, and split the first two and it came to the bottom of the 9th inning and it all counted as part of the regular season, since it was for the National League pennant.Far more exciting than a post season playoff with teams that don't even belong. It's just a playoff and nothing else.Today is not THE World Series or THE Pennant, just a three round playoff.Phony.

@Johngmoore Um, no. You're completely wrong. The Giants won this pennant in 1951, and they then went on to play the New York Yankees in the World Series, a series the Yankees won in 6 games.
The Giants would win a World Series three years later, however, in 1954.
