haha i used to live there, and I totally agree with you, and Death Cab.his description of LA is the most accurate i have ever heard. I really dont even like LA County in general, the nice places are Santa Barbara County north along the coast, and also San Diego County. It's funny the line where he says "Do you ever have trouble breathing, and he said it varies from season to season kid" It's totally true, Fall and Summer = Worst air ever. Late spring sometimes, and sometimes January too..
Dang, he sounds sort of out of breath. It's not a bad thing, just an observation. He must be playing really hard or it must be really hot in there or something.
on the record, he does say "i might explode someday soon," the sunny day in june is just something that i've always seen him do live, so no, you are not going bonkers, that is what he says.
I live up in the northwest and I'm an aspiring musician. I live in Tacoma And I must say that these guys inspire me so much with their music, and it inspires me so much more knowing that they grew up in the same playgrounds that I did.
Ben wrote the song at least six years before this performance and he meant no hard feelings after . I will admit they have a lot of hubris for performing that song in LA but it's a good song either way.
living in southern california all my life, this song rings true in every way. Those that fight for LA take a closer look at the lyrics. Tell me that the 405 is not constantly full of traffic, tell me can you see the skyline of LA from Pasadena on a normal day, tell me, does everyone have to have the best luxury car, and the biggest house? Hollywood is not what they make it out to be in the movies. And the population still continues to grow. Dont take it personally but he is telling the truth.
The song isn't about Los Angeles, rather a love song about a close friend of Ben's wanting to move there and Ben making up reasons why she shouldn't. Not everything is so straightforward.
Ben was trying to start a north/south indie rock rivalry, too bad it didn't work. If I were older I would definately record some songs about how it's so darn cold and dreary in seattle
I'm from Seattle and moved to LA a year ago. It is more smoggy and dirty, but I love the look of those huge palm tree lined streets and the huge Santa Ana and Santa Monica mountains. I love all the things to do here and I've found that most people in LA are great. I loved things about Seattle as well, but I don't regret moving down here. I guess Gibbard can't see any of this, but it's all good.
Talk to people who were there in the 70's and 80's.. the orange sky with brown horizons and smell are nothing like it used to be.
It takes time, LA doesn't have the constant rain to help scrub the air, but it's definitely improved while Seattle's gone a bit the other way with it's population growth.
LA IS dirty and smoggy. You can't get around that. "You don't have to take it personally" means he's not calling THEM dirty and smelly, but the streets. It's pretty simple.
When you live up in the oregon/ idaho/ washington area and thats where you grew up, LA does seem really bad. He's not saying that it's the worst place in the world, like he says at the end don't take it personaly.
That's one song. Have you heard anymore of their stuff? They're a good band, and this, even though it may offend you, is a well-written song. Ben Gibbard could write a song telling me that my mother is a whore, but if it's a lyrically tight song, I wouldn't care.
I actually like death cab I just don't like this song. I spent a lot of time out of state when I was in the army and found there is a lot of people who hate L.A. The part that really annoyed me was that almost all of these people had never been to L.A.
My only question to you would be if you had heard this song before going to that show? If so you had prior knowledge of his apparent disdain for L.A. through the tune's lyrical sense. If this is the case then why should he feel guilty for taking your money when you're just giving to him. The joke is now on you.

I was there when they filmed this. He told the audience, "This song is about you guys," and then the whole song talks shit about L.A. What a prick. He wouldn't wanna live in L.A but he'll take the locals money.
Your town's a dump-don't take it the wrong way?. No disrespect but your hometown's such a shithole they should put a toilet seat over it. That was a love comment.
Try coming up to Bellingham. You might understand where he comes from. It is completely different from LA, and I think this song is totally true, which is why I avoid LA and that entire area as much as I possibly can.
You can't swim in a town this shallow.

If you think about it, Death Cab/Ben Gibbard has so many songs about leaving or trying to keep someone from leaving.
This song, Lack of Color, We Laugh Indoors, Blacking Out the Friction, Cleveland (All-Time Quarterback), Title and Registration..
I'm sure there are more. I just thought that was mildly interesting.

well usually californians only get told how shitty and restrictive and shallow their state and cities are by people not a part of their society
hearing an artist say it is something entirely different

It sounds like he's sick, not that he sounds bad, you can just kind of tell his nose is stuffed up.
It must suck being sick on tour, and he still pushes on! It's like he's some sort of unstoppable train of terror.
