To Ali74, in response, you are flippant and without knowledge in swimming....each different stroke takes different muscles and when I, in my youth, swam on a school team, most swimmers only did one stroke. Michael Phelps has proven he IS the best swimmer in the world....hands down. And for you to casually denigrate his or any other athlete's efforts only says you post yourself as a one person authority on nothing.

If only you knew how hard it is to switch strokes the way he does....the mental preassure he is under...he is absolutely one of the best athletes ever. I see your point, it seems like they just threw him in as many races as he could handle, but its not easy to be best in the world at that many events. Its unbelievable, any swimmer knows that because everyone has at least 1 or even 2 bad strokes. I think phelps should focus on 3 or 4 events in 2012, and try and set crazy world records.

He won 8 gold medals in a single olympics. Nobody as ever done that. It may not have been the most watched sport in the olympics but after michael phelps, it might be. The man is amazing. I don't know him personally, but I can safely say that he is far from selfish. People want you to look composed when you are up there receiving your medal, so if he says that he can't sing the anthem cause he'll cry, I believe it.
