@Akhotnik I'm in the studio right now ... we are preparing series #4 ... it has a book with it and will be eight videos ... ccd, accelerrometer, etc. Details at my web site on the book.
@Akhotnik I'm doing the EXACT same thing right now! I just learned about vsauce yesterday.... But I learned of sooo many other channels like this one from vsauce already! It's awesome!
I've trashed any paper for over a year, everything goes to recycling. I actually canceled my garbage service because it would take almost three weeks to fill the container. Instead my I give my neighbor 20/mon to use his. My service was 70/mon so I'm saving 50/mon. A quick stop at the recycling center is all it takes for me.
It pains me to see engineers design disposable products out of such valuable resources and as you pointed out in your video, hard to extract from once they've been used.
building everything with screws or with ways you can take them appart is not greener at all...it would only augment production, electricity and fuel costs...
I think we should have prisoners go out to the dump and collect things that could be recycled. They wouldn't feel so depressed because they're spending their time and it's a bit of a chore that most civilians would find difficult.
@andersonxe Semiconductors can produce heat. Heat sinks used with higher power semi conductors are nothing new. Look into Cree high power LED products.
@SpooderW Thx for the words of encouragement. We are releasing a new set of vids soon - the first comes out on Tuesday about 11a eastern time. This new series isn't as, well, silly as the first ones, instead we use our camera to look at well engineered everyday objects - selectric typewriters, coffee makers, black boxes, and even pop cans - from an unusual view point. Stay tuned! (And keep commenting: I love the feedback.)
@engineerguyvideo Awesome to hear! I thought these were almost too silly anyway so less silly sounds great! I'll be sure to check out the next set of videos when they air!
@SpooderW We came to the same conclusion ... so we'll see with this next set - youtube is a harsh taskmaster! It'll be out 10a central time on Tuesday Nov. 8, 2010 the first one rolls out ... others in the pipeline.
@TheWelly888 They are supposed to last longer but eventually will wear out... I, of course, made up that trash to be representative of what the statistics show about trash. I put in the LED to show a current design that ISN'T good green design: It is very hard to take apart. In fact all that hammering did nothing: That LED is in a lamp in my living room still work :-)
@engineerguyvideo I'm kinda a dumbster diver; meaning that I often ask people if they have old junk (electronics, but also machines with motors in them) and recycle them in another projects. I love it, but I hate stuff like this; You cant take it apart and the only way to remove it is to smash it. Would be nice if people could repair there own stuff again.
@MarijnStevens I agree. Here's something interesting I learned. In a photocopier the only valuable part to recycle - in today's economy! - is the aluminum drum at the middle. Our local recycler cannot afford to hire someone to ripe these out - I did a video where I took apart copier, its real and show how hard it is ... so, he crushes them to like 1 foot square, sells them to another recycler who then cut it into piece and induces eddy currents to make aluminum magnetic & extracts it!
Selecting the Google Speech Recognition "Transcribe Audio" option (on the CC button) is an interesting addition to viewing this -- doctors make up 2% ???!
If I could take apart that light bulb I would scavenge all the working LEDs and the heatsink.

What he is trying to say, is that we should produce according the cradle-to-cradle principle.

Those LED lightbulbs are expensive! I can't bet you really hit that with a hammer, or if anybody had thrown it away. B)
Brilliant and entertaining, though!

Looks like the magic in the magic mallet is running low. Yea the humor is corny, but I don't see why there needs to be less of it.

I really like your videos, they're short, informative, and a little humorous. I wish my University was cool enough to have something like this.

why would LED light bulb have a heat sink?
andersonxe 1 year ago
@andersonxe high-power LED-s do produce heat. And it's more fragile than glass bulb and tungsten, hence heat sink is necessary.

I thought LEDs are supposed to last a LOT longer than CFLs or incandescent bulbs so why was that one trashed?
