omg he seriously just game to my school today hes playing with my middle school jazz band and he soloed with everyone he is so cool!! im honered to have met him and he's so cool its unbelivable
What a treat - an inspiring solo! I studied with Jeff's dad...and probably met Jeff once or twice in the studio with my head buried deep in some Arban fantasias.
A lot of people are rather dead-looking when they play...But I can tell you. As good as that guy is...He's got a love for it. You can't be that good and not love it.
Dude! I'm amazed you say that! I'm not going to criticize your opinion, but could you suggest something you reckon is good? I just want to know - if that's bad, what's good?
oh ik hes a private teacher, but i didnt think he would still be running a band. at least one of the localjazz competitions he was introduced as a free lance trombonist, maybe thats where the confusing came from on my part. my bad
jack this is just great only found this looking for stan kenton and saw the name jeff uusitallo, who played with kenton in 70s and had to have look, any more video or can ibuy a dvd of this concert, from a kenton nut in the highlands of scotland. thanks for posting.
Scotland-Beautiful country! Thanks for the note. Didn't get enough footage to put together a dvd. Too bad, it was a good show. I am also a Uusitalo fan. Great player and pal who is not nearly recorded enough. Has 2 long features on "Beautiful Bones" as does Bill Watrous (Shadow of Yer Smile)Jeff also has solo spots on "Barduhn" and Valerie Day's "I'm Beginning to See the Light". If you're a Kenton fan you might also recognize Michael Bard. Keep in touch, Jack
oh yeah JEFF!!! i took lessons for about 2 or 3 months from jeff and it as some of the best solo experience of my life!! my 2b suits me well but his 3b tone is killer!! uusitalo is the shit!!!
This concert was in November when Bill was about on his death bed. He made the decision that week that he couldn't make the trip. He sounds great on the cd. His solo on Shadow of You Smile is so Watrousesque; great ballad playing and ends the solo typical (for him) improv. Uusitalo's solo on The Horns of Jericho is just crazy studendous. Obviously I am biased. You can hear some of this at cdbaby. Thanks again for the comments.
Jeff plays on a King 3B. That size of trombone is typical for jazz players like Jeff. King 2Bs, Conn 6Hs, and Bach 16s are also common for jazz players. Large bore horns with f attachments will usually be seen in legit (classical) settings. It is difficult to get the charchteristic jazz sound out of them and it is difficult to play in the upper register for an extended time.
I was being facetious. Jeff's a good friend and we rib each other regularly. Yes, he is indeed an incredible musician and anyone who has a chance to play with him is very fortunate.
Agreed. Jeff is one of the greats. And a great guy, too. I have to wonder why I am so lucky to have had he, Watrous, Bock, and the rest of the guys on my CD. I am not even sure what is meant by "He missed the Eb". It sounds great to me. I am thinking that someone missed the point of the solo!
I think it's funny how Johnsonsohana just goes "eh" when he adds it to one of his favorite videos. Jeff Uusitalo is the man! He was THE trombone soloist for Stan Kenton in Kenton's last 2 years alive. I think Stan Kenton knew a phenomenal trombone player when he saw one, and he obivously saw it in Uusitalo.
I agree that Jeff Uusitalo is one of the great jazz trombonists. He's a great guy, as well. We had 10 tromonists on stage and another twenty in the trombone choir before the concert.

I've got that cut by Kenton with Bill Uusitalo. Jesus I miss those big bands. I'm happy that there are still some left pumping out the brass.

it can sound okay depending on what you are playing. some tones (jazz) are stuffy sounding, as some are more full sounding (like concert or chorales)

hmm thx
i havent ever had problems with getting high notes
i can hit a double d(d on the f line of the teble clef) and im a freshman
but i am more of a classical trombonist as of now
i always had trouble getting a baritone like tone out of the regular ones
so i guess i just have lips for trombone

Whew! Is that a relief! I'm glad you cleared that up.
