  • Way to go fricking high!

  • I played this song and this solo! I sucked! YAYYYYY!

  • I've got that cut by Kenton with Bill Uusitalo. Jesus I miss those big bands. I'm happy that there are still some left pumping out the brass.

  • Marvelous! What a neat sound. What neat ideas. Me likey!

  • I want that sound now!!! Sounds great!

  • What a treat - an inspiring solo! I studied with Jeff's dad...and probably met Jeff once or twice in the studio with my head buried deep in some Arban fantasias.

  • Jeff is a great trombonist and tells great jokes also!

  • Beastish!!!

  • WOW!!! Not that's what I'm talking about!

  • Excellent soloing! Does anybody know what chart this solo's from?

  • amazing :-)

  • beast-like

  • aswsome im going to solo in my winter concert i play trombone 2

  • nice, its about time i find a good tenor vid

  • he's got love for the horn. trust me, he lives/ judges/teaches/ plays in my area. i've met him, and he loves bone.

  • It's a Great AMAZING solo,this man is a MONSTER TMB......BRAVO JEFF!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great solo. He has love for it

  • Awesome solo !!! I love that .

  • A lot of people are rather dead-looking when they play...But I can tell you. As good as that guy is...He's got a love for it. You can't be that good and not love it.

  • OMG! I think this is the Mr. Usitalo that was my 5th grade band teacher! Loved that guy!

  • Does this guy give lessons in Seattle?

  • great stuff. love this guy

  • I graduated from West Seattle HS with Jeff. We were in stage band together. Glad to see he's still around!

  • it's good jeff

  • Wow he sounds great!

If only I could play like him!

  • I took lessons from Jeff when I lived in Washington. What a great guy and an amazing player.

  • Great bones player! Thanks for posting!!

    14

  • i've been playing all sorts for 3 years of trombone, and heard a lot of trombonists live, but this guy's just awsome

  • Bravo!!

  • Dude! I'm amazed you say that! I'm not going to criticize your opinion, but could you suggest something you reckon is good? I just want to know - if that's bad, what's good?

  • Yet another trombone player that I've never heard of until now and yet will be playing catch up to the rest of my life...

    Beautiful playing.

  • No argument from me! Jeff is certainly a great player.

  • Ugh..too short! Awesome though!

  • Uusitalo used to play in the Kenton band back in the 70's. He solos on Granada Smoothie from the Journey Into Capricorn album!

  • trumbone isn't hard to play at all ^^ the slide confuses some people, but it's an awesome instrument if you try it out :)

  • that was awsome, im gonna try to plat that.

  • Man, I would love to play the trombone, there is something elegant in that slide, don´t know but maybe it is a personal feeling. And the sound...

  • I play trombone, and it's not that hard to learn or play. I think you should..you won't be disappointed.

  • Well, thank you for the support, maybe I will sometime get to it, I truly hope. Thank you on the comment.

  • Yes, his ass is a teacher! fool geebeeterupper

  • This is really good stuff! I was so surprised to hear Usitalo play as much as he did on the Beautiful Bones CD. Always playing it.

  • This inspires me to go so far with the trombone.

  • Sound like john fedchock.

  • omg the trombone soloist is my jazz band teacher.

  • MY ASS HES YOUR TEACHER!

  • Actually, Jeff is a teacher. He directed the

jazz band at Clark College for a few years.

I took lessons from him when i was in high school, and again when I was at Mount Hood CC.

  • oh ik hes a private teacher, but i didnt think he would still be running a band. at least one of the localjazz competitions he was introduced as a free lance trombonist, maybe thats where the confusing came from on my part. my bad

  • I love the trombone (the way it looks) but i HATE the sound :( sorry just my opinion

  • it can sound okay depending on what you are playing. some tones (jazz) are stuffy sounding, as some are more full sounding (like concert or chorales)

  • great solo indeed ! one of the best i've heard!!! anonymous bonehead

  • Took some lessons from Jeff, he's a rock solid player

  • wow, nice silky smooth sound and some excellent chops

  • very nice..sound fine..

    pozdrawiam

    Pablo

  • jack this is just great only found this looking for stan kenton and saw the name jeff uusitallo, who played with kenton in 70s and had to have look, any more video or can ibuy a dvd of this concert, from a kenton nut in the highlands of scotland. thanks for posting.

  • Scotland-Beautiful country! Thanks for the note. Didn't get enough footage to put together a dvd. Too bad, it was a good show. I am also a Uusitalo fan. Great player and pal who is not nearly recorded enough. Has 2 long features on "Beautiful Bones" as does Bill Watrous (Shadow of Yer Smile)Jeff also has solo spots on "Barduhn" and Valerie Day's "I'm Beginning to See the Light". If you're a Kenton fan you might also recognize Michael Bard. Keep in touch, Jack

  • What's the name of that tune in the vid?

  • This is the solo section of Sammy Nestico's "Switch In Time".

  • oh yeah JEFF!!! i took lessons for about 2 or 3 months from jeff and it as some of the best solo experience of my life!! my 2b suits me well but his 3b tone is killer!! uusitalo is the shit!!!

  • This concert was in November when Bill was about on his death bed. He made the decision that week that he couldn't make the trip. He sounds great on the cd. His solo on Shadow of You Smile is so Watrousesque; great ballad playing and ends the solo typical (for him) improv. Uusitalo's solo on The Horns of Jericho is just crazy studendous. Obviously I am biased. You can hear some of this at cdbaby. Thanks again for the comments.

  • Jack

enjoyed the clips..any chance of more?? how about the Bill watrous??

  • Well Nah557, it sounds like you have some pretty decent chops. Keep studying and practicing. Good luck!

  • WOW

    good

y is he using a regular trombone though?

for me ftriggers always have better play and tone

i just like bigger bores i guess

  • Jeff plays on a King 3B. That size of trombone is typical for jazz players like Jeff. King 2Bs, Conn 6Hs, and Bach 16s are also common for jazz players. Large bore horns with f attachments will usually be seen in legit (classical) settings. It is difficult to get the charchteristic jazz sound out of them and it is difficult to play in the upper register for an extended time.

  • hmm thx

i havent ever had problems with getting high notes

i can hit a double d(d on the f line of the teble clef) and im a freshman

but i am more of a classical trombonist as of now

i always had trouble getting a baritone like tone out of the regular ones

so i guess i just have lips for trombone

  • Whew! Is that a relief! I'm glad you cleared that up.

  • I was being facetious. Jeff's a good friend and we rib each other regularly. Yes, he is indeed an incredible musician and anyone who has a chance to play with him is very fortunate.

  • Definately

  • Agreed. Jeff is one of the greats. And a great guy, too. I have to wonder why I am so lucky to have had he, Watrous, Bock, and the rest of the guys on my CD. I am not even sure what is meant by "He missed the Eb". It sounds great to me. I am thinking that someone missed the point of the solo!

  • I think it's funny how Johnsonsohana just goes "eh" when he adds it to one of his favorite videos. Jeff Uusitalo is the man! He was THE trombone soloist for Stan Kenton in Kenton's last 2 years alive. I think Stan Kenton knew a phenomenal trombone player when he saw one, and he obivously saw it in Uusitalo.

  • Eh. He missed the E flat.

  • I agree that Jeff Uusitalo is one of the great jazz trombonists. He's a great guy, as well. We had 10 tromonists on stage and another twenty in the trombone choir before the concert.

  • Uusitalo is chill! How many trombonists are in the Jack Quimby Band?
