@cheapcape - Sure, Joe, but HBO might have spent a million dollars for the production of their extravaganza, while I did it for free with an old $99 '90s software program. So it's no wonder you are disappointed.. Just be glad you didn't have to pay to see it..
@orionpk - I don't either, but for a cheap and very old program, this is about as good as it will do. The external lights function no longer even works, so that is just the stock chrome-surface texture map. I can't even add any extra highlighting..
Looks good, but has HBO logged any complaints of you uploading this??? They do have their own YouTube Channel with the original video on it (not this specific version, the longer original starting from the apartment where a family is watching the TV).
You realize this open was never CGI based, but motion camera that used tons of film to design this. A nice illusion to say the least. (Reminds me of the NBC News opens from the mid to late 80s being composite drawings, and not CGI.)
I do. I watched (and taped) the HBO: Behind The Scenes special detailing its production, when it first aired in 1983. That same year, I animated on film the 'stargate' effect which I used in this clip, so although the rest of this clip is CG, that one part I made on Ektachrome.
That's probably one of the best opens - ever - for any network. Just how the whole design process and all that work - they could had cheated and done CGI at that time. It just blows one mind...
Nice Model! Now if only we could get the Fiber Optic swooshes and that "Feature" artwork, that would be awesome. But alas, I am grateful for just this as well.
Nice attempt but it's a bit too slow and lifeless.

Wow, that's neat! Great job on the flying "HBO" logo.

Thanks- I mainly wanted to see if I could duplicate some of those animation-moves on the logo as seen in the original. Seemed to work fairly well..
