Hey, I met a man who are 6'3" on a dating SITE-- Tal l H’U‘B. c○ m --.while, I am only 5'6" and I love tall guys. He said to me that tall girls on that site are seeking fun with tall guys...Are you tall and like tall people, if so, go and check here~
Cause if the scanner sees only darkly, the way I do, then I'm cursed and cursed again. And I'll only wind up dead this way, knowing very little and getting that little fragment wrong too.
this is one of my favourite reflective character speeches; Dr. Manhattan's reflections in Watchmen, Leonard's reflections in the Memento bed scene, & the brilliant lines of Vincent Freeman in Gattaca are but a few examples of dialogue so wonderfully composed, it's as if they are works of art themselves. this is definitely one of the best one's though; 5 stars to Phillip K. Dick for putting these words together in such amazing fashion.
I'm still shocked as to how Phillip K Dick tied the secret corrupt agenda of a fascist future government and the life of an average drug-addicted Californian together so beautifully...
kick ass fucking movie i am going to read the book, a book with this kind of subject must be hard as hell to wrtie and then to make a movie of it holy damn five stars with a thumbs up anyones ass who thinks otherwise
i have always criticized keanu reeves as an actor stating that he can't pull off even one adequate performance and that anyone who likes him is stupid. when i got round to seeing 'A Scanner Darkly' i ate a dinner made of my own words followed by a big dessert of humble pie. he is INCREDIBLE in this film
Yeah he really is great in this and it's mostly responsible for me warming to him more and more in recent years. I mean that detachedness he has through i suppose lack of range just works here and gets across the mind-fuck that D causes. It goes from him being bob to an empty shell too quickly but there are still such remarkably sad moments.
@MichaelLeroi I agree I really think i the right role he is one of the best. I think it's because it's not acting, it the real thing, given all the loss he has experienced in his life.
@MichaelLeroi when he plays that role, usually that of the anti hero, soe of his lines, the bitterness it feels so sincere like he can't just be acting, like those are his real emotions.
@MichaelLeroi when he plays that role, usually that of the anti hero, soe of his lines, the bitterness it feels so sincere like he can't just be acting, like those are his real emotions. 3.34 - 0.36 you can practically feel it
One of the best movies ever. I watch it again and again and I love it everytime. I also notice the more subtle details about the plot that you wouldn't notice at first.
Through a glass darkly is a shortened phrase in the New Testament and refers to a mirror and not a lense - a mirror that reflects an imperfect perception of reality, humans not having a clear perception of reality, to put it simply. A Scanner Darkly is a play on that phrase and the D that Bob takes has f**ked him up so much that he can no longer perceive his true self. He hopes the holo scanners have the clarity to do better.
I don't really think a movie needs a message, I take it as dick's catalogue of a period of his life, a period of drug use, paranoia and of corruption and betrayal. I think it's an ode to the friends and family he lost to drugs .
@politeruin That's kinda how I perceived it. I'm a little more of a simpleton but I saw it basically as he's lost himself in the craze of the drug addiction. And though he knows he's a good person he can't see how anymore and hopefully that the scanners can prove it to him. Because if no one else can see it then he is truly lost.
"For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known."
Keanue's character leads a double life where he knows everything but at the same time is forced to block everything he knows. the quote describes one who knows all but reaches a time when they subconsciously "forget (so to speak)" everything they've already known. now include this all into all aspects of life and prepare to be blown the fuck away.
Yeah and i guess the core of Phil K Dick's work is this - through a glass darkly. This scene really adds to the book rather than takes away, the music is so sad.
dude i saw this movie a month ago and have been reciting the quote that it derives from since. it finally fucking hit it. this movie is nothing short of genius.
This is the only scene from this movie that really stayed with me. The dialogue is very powerful. As good as Reeves is, though, I think it is much more a testament to the brilliance of Phillip K. Dick than anything else

Is this the actual audio? It doesn't sound like Keanu for some reason.
akathasamurai 10 months ago
@akathasamurai It's because he's speaking lightly, which most actors are supposed to avoid 99% of the time.
ClaytonOT 8 months ago
@ClaytonOT No, his voice is higher in this clip. I watched this film recently and his voice is much lower in this scene.

@politeruin I've always liked Keanu...it just seems like some of his biggest parts have been the victim of bad writing.

A little late, but you're right. Most how I can think as, his most UNWOODEN performance.

Many eyes, and one big one..the source.
And yea...I never really understood this part-until I had a personal experience.

One of the best book, and movies for a book, EVER.
This movie was so well done, rotoscope animation could not have been put to a better storyline.
