I had a credit card sized solar calculator in the '80s with no battery, so it's hard to believe that a calculator was considered a high-drain device only about ten years earlier. Crazy. I know glowing LEDs took more power than passive reflective LCD, but there was nothing mechanical, like a cassette player.
