You don't need to be great at drawing. Some fundamental principles carry over from 2D to 3D though (like squash-and-stretch, anticipation/follow-through... etc).
Kind of depends on what area of 3D animation you want to get into.
For modeling, artists give the modelers images to work off of.
For texturing, I'd consider drawing an essential skill.
In the end, I don't think drawing great is necessary, but it certainly helps.
@tomiatoe Those are great animations! I just started using flash yesterday, i can't really do it much because of all the homework, but it's coming out pretty smooth. In total, i have about half an hour to work on it every day unless I stay up late. Were those animations created in flash? I mean, did you draw them and then scan them onto the computer or just draw them on the computer? I have to draw mine on the computer, it's going to take a lot to get use to, without a grahpics tablet. Good luck
@Rs2006REMAKEVids thanks, nope i don't draw and scan. i draw all on with a graphics tablet! =) my first animations on flash were so bad it was unbelivable haha, keep practising and your animations will become perfect! =)
@tomiatoe Thanks :) I will, i have a graphics tablet, but its so old that it won't work, and it is probably gonna take a while to get a new one, so i gotta deal with what i got, and i have to draw on the computer, because a photocopier is miles away, and i don't prefer going all the way there just to scan my drawings :/ so i guess i will have to learn how to draw with the computer for now :) Keep up the good videos, i look forward to more great videos!
i would like to study animation after high school and im unsure on just how much talent is needed in both art and in the programs used. i like to draw but i wanna make sure this is a career i want to follow, and advice or suggestions?
First, make sure what you want the animation to be, by laying out a quick storyboard. It doesn't have to be detailed. It just helps because it keeps your animation from going off on a tangent.
2. Animate
I found keyframing to be really helpful.
a. Draw the major poses throughout the animation (keyframing)
i was under the impression that because of the density of the core of a bowling ball. Even though it is heavy. Is so high that it bounces in very much the same way a golf ball or bouncing ball would when it hits a hard surface.
Hey, you're right. I just now looked at some reference videos and saw some that bounced pretty high like normal. I guess it depends on what surface you bounce it on.
I found this, which was similar to mine: youtube 2nLlsdAZZHs
@chocobosROK Indeed. Though I guess that's because of the thing it bounces on bouncing aswell. Nullifying the bounce of the ball. . . . I can assume that bowling ball you drew was dropped onto a carpeted floor then XD.btw no hard feelings? I'm just a science geek =/
So for these animations are you just drawing on multiple pieces of paper and then scanning them and putting them together? What program do you put them together with if this is what you're doing? If you could reply back to me in a message or on here that would be great.
you animate really well :D. Im kinda young, but i got into the anime stuff a long time ago and started drawing. now you can find me on the computer watching my fave show while attempting to animate. XD. i officially think that you r like probably the TOP traditional animator i have ever seen! :DDD... keep up the good work. im gonna try traditional stuff too sometimes soon.
NIce work. . .Your first semester seemed cool. Mine sucked. Of course I was at a community college, not a University. All we did our first semester was watch old cartoons like Betty Boop and Popeye. . .Your school seems good. You are doing well. Keep up the work and master those skills. :D
Good and amazaing animation kinda tutorial :P the things you had to understand for traditional is like what i'm trying to learn from by Walt Stanchfield's lecture books, a pastime Disney animator: he a gr8 teacher there
you inspire me :D I'd like to be a 2-D animator myself and I was absolutely stunned at your artwork! Keep up the good work! :D Question... How did you manage to put this on a computer?
I really enjoyed this, it was nice seeing how you started from the classic bouncing ball all the way to something with a bit of a story to it. Keep up the great work!
can you do some tutorials on how the process works? i'm planning to do some just for like practice b/c i'm getting into utd this year and hope to major in arts and tech and some tutorial vids would be awesome!
Well, i'm not much of an instructor. I'm sure there are some videos floating around somewhere.. The professor I learned 2d animation under was pretty good. He's a cool guy, too, so he'd definitely help/critique your work if you ask.
im still getting into animation. I've done alot of flip books, and have been considering starting a traditional animation project. I've read books on animation, and i was just wondering the method on how you did yours with the background
do you mind me asking how old you were when you started your first year? I'm really interested in this video because I want to study animation in college but i have no idea if you have to be experienced when you start the class so I want to find out so i could start early :) the video was really nice by the way i didn't think any of them were bad at all :D
I was turning 19. Our instructor let us use stick figures, so long as we stuck to the principles we learned. As long as you have an interest/passion for this stuff, I'd say go for it, with or without much experience. If you work hard at some thing, it'll show.
i wish i could draw and animate like you! well i can anime draw and stuff but im bad at body and hands and keeping the height of my character thats why i mainly do cats and not humans but i cant keep the size of those either etc etc. i cant even keep one body part the same length or height.
hey nice vid, me and my fiancee are have applied, for animation uni. just waiting to hear back but. this vid is really insightfull at the processes thanks for posting we really enjoyed it and i liked your animations :) (Y)
I do find it interesting that you did a lip sync before the leaf fall...The way I was taught was we had to learn basic things before moving onto a person. Like a ball bounce, then brick, followed by the leaf and a flower sack. Then if the class was ready we would move on to walk cycles. I'm not criticizing the way you were taught, if I come across like that I apologize. I know everyone is taught differently, just like I said earlier, I just find it interesting.
wow nice video, really gives an insight into what is being in an animation course would be like...for the first week anyway :P and on that note, one week! that's quite a lot of assignments! O.O
@Jahursai There are more places than just Disney you know. I've been looking around myself and I found lots of other studios(though some are not as well known as disney, but some are just the same length as disney).
Oooh...your female character has the same hair one of my OC's do on deviantart xD
Hey, I've been curious about this for a long time but you don't have to re-draw the backgorund for each movement, right? Because it's the only thing who's lines don't suddenly turn thicker or thinner at any moment.but then how do you keep the background like that? and do you scan every single picture?
hi, hehe, i should take a look at your deviantart. I've got one too! But it doesn't have much. Anyway, the animation program I used allowed me to scan images into different layers. That way I can just scan in one image for the background and have it run for as many frames as I want. And... unfortunately you have to keep scanning in pictures. The ability to layer helps a lot though. Keeps the work of redrawing down to a minimum. Hope that helps!!!
@chocobosROK: Oh wow, so that's where the function of layers in photoshop came from xD but then that leaves the coloring sound complicated. If you had to color it, the background probably stays but every frame for each character movement?
Oooh and what's your DA name? I'd like to check out your works, please? =3
hey mate this is awesome, are yu particularly only for 2d? i think uve done much more than we did here for 2d altho im mainly for 3d. yu did realy great work for ur first year

Yeah! Just keep striving to reach your goals! I've yet to figure out what I really wanna do, but I'm taking different classes to figure just that. I'm liking it a lot. It's fun to dive into this kinda stuff. :D
wow, good stuff. loved the story/ storyboard. I'm in an animation coarse myself at Bristol UK. we haven't advanced nearly as fast as that, but are covering many different types of animation simultaneously.. A lot of things on our coarses are actually identical- flag cycles, bouncing balls, walk cycle.. hope to put up my own video soon and compare coarses, should be interesting!

I was worried, too, but here's what I've learned.
Hardwork, dedication, and passion exceed any ounce of talent.
If you like drawing and want to pursue it, give it a try.
Just be prepared to practice.
You can always change career paths if you end up not liking it.
It might delay graduation, but the important thing is finding what you love.
