I enjoyed seeing these guys at the Wakarusa Festival in Kansas a few years back. I love oteil's style and how he incorporates the lack of the slap pluck technique like most other funk oriented bands with bass players who overuse the technique. Great band.
tough crowd is right.....Those freakin geeks don't know who is in front of them. Little do they know they are hearing some of the best of the best....
that some tasty licks there from Mr. Kimbrell, nice guy. he must think they're mighty tasty too, he holds the guitar right to his face, like he's about to lick it!
I don't know the keyboard player, but the other guys in the band are the nicest, most humble players I've had the pleasure to hang with. They deserve MUCH more publicity than they have.
I live in birmingham,al where each of these musicians calls home. Each of them are excellent players and are in a national band for a reason. Mark kimbrell is a legend in town... When he plays with local Carlos Pino... musicians and guitarists flock to take notes and go to "school"
well I will agree chris dfryar is an awesome drummer, however, He is not the only reason this band "jumps". Oteil is and has been acclaimed as one of the top three Bass players in the world. Matt Slocum on Keys is no slouch and Mark Kimbrell is a hell of a guitarist!
Frankly, (though this is a drummer's perspective) the reason this piece (and for that matter this band) jumps is due in great part to Chris Fryar and the tremendous pocket he creates. I've had the pleasure to watch him at work a few times; I've also had the pleasure of seeing Weckl, Wackerstein, Rich, Palmer, Bruford, Barlow, Pietro, Williams, Roach, etc. blah, blah, woof, woof.... This gentleman can sit with them all. Great chops, independence, meter, musicianship... a wonderful player.
Does Mom have any memories of Dave and his talent back then? I've seen him play a few times...it's enough to quell any aspirations to "talent" I might have regarding my own efforts.
its nice to see music that can jam and have a great message, too bad they dont tour more though.....
