  • Yeah, I recognize this song. Must have heard it somewhere before. U2's unreleased songs and b-sides are better than most band's top-shelf material. U2 is so prolific that a hundred years from now people will look back on them with the same reverence they'll have for The Beatles.

  • like it, but it's too close to "All Along the Watchtower" to be comfortable to release. U2 did All Along the WatchTower during Shake, Rattle, and Hum days...

  • reminds me of xtal by aphex twin. beautiful haunting music. love it!!

  • no,worries, hony, rond middag terug,ik moet gaan tydlove you grapje i did jy had nodig

  • buenaaaa!!

  • Blessed is the spirit that overcomes...

  • U2 drives me through a crazy and funny trip

  • joshua tree should have used this song in place of "trip through your wires" can you imagine what an awesome album the joshua tree could have been if they used some of these awesome b-sides!

  • One of U2s very best. They should have kept it for an official album. It's that good. Awesome seeing them go back to songs like this and Disappearing Act and finish off songs like this for their deluxe albums.

  • So, where can one find this song? Is it on a b-side or something?

  • @TheInfiniteDepth its on the 2 disc set 1990 - 2000

  • @MJLU280 Why, thank you!

  • @TheInfiniteDepth I think its on re-released version of The Joshua Tree, the 2nd disc has all the b-sides and this is one of them. Amazing.

  • I miss songs like this from U2

  • This lyrically is great. Who has heard this, not, comparatively a wide audience. OK, it's a song, but a song that should have been next to their greatest in the Joshua Tree album. So good. So meaningful. So what a story to tell. So relevant in tnis selfish unwielding world. So it should have been... On the Album. But alas, conversely one of those rare gem of a song that is better rejetced from mainstream to have more impact as one "that never made it". Peace. U2. U23, Hype, Feedback.

  • "The Sweetest Thing" was thrown over their shoulders too rather than make it on the Joshua Tree.

  • Paused at 0:33 to type that this is my first time ever hearing this, never heard or knew of it before...

  • @KenfromDublin Forgot I heard it before, this is my second time hearing it for the first time...

  • 20 años para escribir esta cancion O.O y simplemente una obra de arte (Y)

  • @Romulus14

100% of a truth! I'm so in fuckin' good mood, this music make me feel great!:)

  • 3 words : Best Band Ever.

  • @laboloche You are so right! They are just amazing. Followed them since "Boy" came out back in the early 80´s

  • Beautiful! This song deserves more recognition!

  • I love this song but what happened to THE JOSHUA TREE? what a bummer its dead? those tree lives hundreds and thousands of years...ok who tore it down? leave it to humans to screw up a beautiful tree..what a BUMMER....DAMMITT

  • @longshotz40 That's why U2 never told where it was

  • I'm not sure if this makes me melancholy or inspired

  • so beautiful

  • a Wave of sorrow , was what Bono wanted with this song

  • I love Bono and his message but this video does not relate to what he is singing about. He sings about Africans and their plight. The whole song is about refugees from an on-going war. Please don't confuse our nation's deserts with the African plight. He was singing specifically about the refugees from the Congo and Rewanda and the civil war there. Civil war in Central Africa. A very horrible thing......

  • awesome

  • Magnificent :D

  • tthanks

  • this song was from the joshua tree sessions 1986, where as dirty diana was 1987-1988, so i think mj was copying u2

  • @boxpine69 well if it was from the sessions of the joshua tree it never came out, if it was only released in 2007 michael coudl'nt hear it in 1986. But i love this song too i'm a huge of U2 too^^. But i think bono's voice is a little bit different of his voice on the joshua tree album no? like in where the streets have no name she's not really the same

  • @greatMJforeverN1 it was from the joshua street sessions, winter 86. it never made it on the album, but they re- recorded it a couple of years back, which is why bonos voice sounds different. but its still the same sounding song from back then.

  • I don't know if you notice it but the piano sounds very like Dirty Diana I think.

  • @greatMJforeverN1 I noticed that too

  • un des morceaux les plus mystiques de U2, chair de poule assurée. Un de leurs meilleurs titres!

  • from what album is this song.

  • @fvvzr the joshua tree deluxe special gold edition, (or whatever) didnt make the original album release

  • Piano is awsome. brilliant song! need to make more tunes with keys in more though :)

  • Eu comprei hoje a versão com 2 CDS sem saber que tinha esta música, se soubesse teria comprando antes.

Se ela fosse um "Lado A", teria dado ainda mais brilho a The Joshua Tree, que pena.

  • Great song....however the ending chant sounds like the oompa loompas! U2 has a tendency to screw up a perfectly good tune!

  • Incredible that was a just a "B-side"!!! Viva U2

  • U2 always gets me in a good mood, because their music is so full of hope

  • @Romulus14 U2? Me 2 :)

  • Great song. Felt really touched.

  • che bella questa canzone --------mi piace tantissimo Grandi u2

  • With all those unreleased songs, they can compose their best album ever. Amazing !!

  • how could this song have possibly been an "afterthought"? its magnificent! these lyrics are some of the most deep lyrics i have heard in a long time

  • great song!! really amazing!

  • and The Playboy Mansion

  • Yeah, I didn't know this U2 song neither. I like it a lot. Recently I discovered Heartland, Spanish Eyes, Ground Beneath Her Feet as well. And I thought Im U2 fan. I'm ashamed...:-/

  • could'nt agree even more.. there are so many great songs like this one out there by u2 that if you are not a hard core fan you poperly would'nt have heard them...

  • Amazing... This is the first time I have come across this song by them. I need to listen play it over.

  • Leave out Bullet The Blue Sky? Are you NUTS? You ever seen that performed live on the Zoo Tv Outside Broadcast Tour?

But I agree, this song should have made it onto SOMETHING - even released as a single with no connection to any album.

But I think they just finished it a few years ago. Sounds more like current U2 then U2 circa Joshua Tree.

  • AchtungBaby79 is right!

  • u2 the very best

  • It's on "The Joshua Tree (Remastered)" Track 11 or " Medium, Rare & Remastered" Track 4 and was played once live at London, Union Chapel "Mencap's Little Noise Sessions" 23th Nov 2007

  • waves...

  • Oh my God!!!!! wooow....never heard it before i just stumbled into it!! I don't know how I missed it (hardcore u2 fan) man this a master piece...

  • Wow i just stumbled on it to whata powerfull song.Great to see bono sing justloveee his voice where is this song from?? want it .

Have you seen there 360 tour? i did in toronto great concert i hope this isnt there last tour i have a feeling it might be there are getting old might want to retire i will miss them sooo much

  • fantastic ! they are the kings of music !

  • what a fucking powerfull song

this is why after 23 yrs i still love u2

love and peace from a scottish u2 fan

  • i adore this song.

    magnificent.

    looove bono <3.

  • I love this too !

  • Love this!

  • What b-sides Joshua has.Their bests b-sides and the achtung's follow

  • both released and unreleased songs the Joshua Tree album surely the best album ever made.

  • magnificent.

  • instead of removing songs, they should just add more songs

  • Not me.But is time for U2 to make a double album

  • Comment removed

  • Not ¨bullet the blue sky¨ but maybe ¨I trip Trough Your Wires¨

  • i disagree this song should have just been added and they would have an extra song. Bullet the blue sky for me is amazing song i love it.

  • u2 is the best. this is a human tragedy that us weterners so conveniently seem to ignore, simply because there is no monetary interest or national one either. It makes me wonder if christianity is all that is is advertised to be.

  • tnx so much for the info.

people from Germany are always polite and answers to me everytime???

you should won WWII, not those comunists

  • what album is this ?????

    it's not Joshua tree

  • It's on the 2007 Re-issue Bonus Disc

  • Not me.

  • I R-E-A-L-L-Y miss the Joshua Tree era:(

  • Here's what separates U2 from the other "greats": some of their best songs are b-sides; songs they do not even perform live. Name the other groups in history that have that in common with U2.

  • beautiful

  • LOVE IT

  • my new u2 favorite

    I LOVE BONO

  • Yeah, it BLEW ME AWAY too the first time I heard it and became one of my favorites as well.

Can you imagine this song was "shelfed" and is essentially an "afterthought" as far as U2 are concerned?

  • can we buy this song o iTunes? becuase i totally would

  • Yes, I found it on iTunes; search for "U2 Wave of Sorrow (Birdland)".

  • Fantastic song..

  • The words are from one of the few noble things you find in a mankind's heart: COMPASSION

  • this song is a gem. you dont hear songs like this anymore.

  • @recobalegend20

I just heard it right here on youtube

  • you cant hear music like this its just u can hear it with u2 amazing

  • this song you cant always hear music like this amazing by u2 thanks

  • You never hear anything this heavy and moody on the radio.

  • wonderful song and video

    Thank you rattleU2

  • good/solid song

  • I watched the video of Bono explaining this song and singing it along with a rough demo. I had chills. This is a beautiful finished product. So no I have to go buy the Joshua Tree Deluxe edition!

  • This song was originally written and recorded during the Joshua Tree sessions. But U2 couldn't finish it in time so it didn't make the album. They thought about it being a b-side but decided it was too good and release it on a later album. This never happened as U2 was rushed to finish The Joshua Tree. In 2007 Bono and U2 agreed to do a re-recording which they did and now this song is on the Deluxe Edition of The Joshua Tree which is available on iTunes.

  • U2 peut se permettre "de coté " cette chanson sans en parler plus que ça, c'est dire le potentiel.....Beaucoup de groupes aimerait juste faire des tubes comme celui ci. Bref! Super zik, meilleur groupe, à faire partagerrrrr

  • A little similar begining with "Because the night" of Springsteen. I guess this song is on The Josua Tree bonus from the 20 aniversary

  • I thought the same thing, the beggining is very similar to Because The Night... They're both great songs so no matter :-P

  • Wow, 20+ years as a fan and I've never heard of this song. Thanks.

  • I got chills right from the start of this song.

  • Brividi!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I wish there could be band like U2

  • OMG this is amazing. What a great song, and they can afford to discard it. That says it all.

  • Tough to see the Joshua tree like that...

  • Fantastic song, mighty, makes you fly in thje best U2 tradition.Out of time, full with emotions and...if the rain came now.....

  • No way you could take out Exit, imho.

  • This is a gem aka Birdland. Not the kind of gem you find opening a brand new CD/download of your fav artist, (Coldplay, Lady Gaga, J Morrison) this is mind blowing genius. Cosmic near "One" Status. Don't break the mould. Cast the die, don't break the mould. New album, 11 tracks from a pick of a tasty 60. Say no more. 5 out of 5. TC

  • I think this song would've fit well in the end of The Joshua Tree album. To replace Exit or Mothers of the Disappeared with this one would have made the album even better in my opinion. Didn't really care for those two.

  • i agree

but not with "the exit". watch the live version of rattle &hum

  • Comment removed

  • oh man, Mothers of the disappeared is a brilliant song, one of their best and so emotional about those poor people that were stolen in the night.

But this song 'wave of sorrow' is amazing. I've never heard of it? How has this been discovered and what era is it? Is it from Joshu tree era?

  • Monetary, this song was written about Bono and his wife Ali's (unpublicised) trip to help with famine relief in Ethiopia in late 1985 or 1986) which was when The Joshua Tree was being written. The lyrics all tie-in with what was happening in the deserts there at the time and the hopelessness and struggle of the people. It almost made the album apparently - not sure why not but there's an interview on YouTube where Bono talks about it. Its great song, would have fitted very well on the album.

  • thanks for the info on 'wave of sorrow'. I'm stunned by this song. Both in its sad melody and profound words. Why is this world one of such extremes? What can we do for the poorest of the poor? I want to help but am so frustrated by my own lack of ability to do what appears to be a meaningful way.

Blessed are the tin can cardboard boxes

Blessed is the spirit that overcomes..

  • one clothing drive for the homeless during winter, one canned good for the food shelter, one Red Product item on ur next motorolla or gap or apple purchase... or one dollar a month pledged to unicef relief agency... saving the world doesn't have to be dramatic. dramas are generally the explosive effect of many small roles. let bono and gandhi take the big reigns, we can simply be the legs of the horse. one little step at a time. help where u can. that's all-

  • powerful words from you there my friend, and good advice. Thanks.

  • This song is awesome. U2 rock

search this song and see bono's account for this song. pure brilliance

  • Jesus the actual Joshua Tree form the album cover is dead

  • Really???

  • How did it die? Natural causes or was their foul play? A lot of foul play nowadays. There are so many divils around! Just waiting for that right moment to arrive when they can pounce and destruct. A frightening world!

  • le falta la fuerza del ZooTV, por ejemplo, me gusta mas rockero

  • Wow, what a gem.

  • Why This Song Was Not In Any Disc? It Is A Very Great Song.

  • joshua tree aniversary!

  • 3:41 Bono reminds me of the vampire guy from Van Helsing... lol he looks just like him.

  • The image of the boys at 3:41 would make a nice framed photo in my living room!! Great shot.

  • This has such beautiful lyrics.

  • My favv U2's song!

  • nice tune, but as a huge U2 fan, I can understand why this was cut from Joshua Tree, it seems sort of unfinished. But still a song most other bands would die to have written.

  • this song is pure soul...this is bono.

  • I'm suprised at that.

I always thought ATYCLB was their best album and that was afterwards.

It's good to see someone appreciating Pop though, although I wouldn't say their following albums were anything other than brilliant.

  • awesome:D

  • Awesome Lyrics. Awesome Song. Awesome Band.

  • Best live version of "Bullet the Blue Sky" is on the Boston Elevation Tour DVD. Best live version of "The Fly" too. Check it out.

  • Does anyone know when this song was released???Or any details of this song??

  • it's from The Joshua Tree [Bonus Disc]. i have it in Remastered / Expanded Super Deluxe Edition (2CD/DVD)

  • HaHaHa. Is all that what it's really called?

  • actually i only liked a couple tracks off of pop like staring at the sun and please. well, actually, mofo and last night on earth too. nevermind lol.

but after pop i totally lost interest. but maybe i just moved on to other music. the last album which i liked EVERY track is achtung. that album was amazing! amazing in studio and more amazing live. poptour 1997 soldier field. too young for zootv.

  • I loved POP too... I mean, I also loved the following albums, but POP was more independent from the artistit point of view...

  • byox

    terrible song?

    lol

    great song i love u2

  • What sort of dumbass U2 fans killed the tree :-(

  • I don't think this was a fan!

  • Great great song ..

  • was that Bono in todays era during 3:09?

  • that's the edge at 3:09.

notice the hat cuz he's balding even back then

  • poor Edge started going bald right after Boy!

  • I meen the voice:-P

  • i really love that song aw!! thats cool!!! u2 is the best!!! XD

  • magnifica

por isto amo u2 e muito mais

    u2 amaor de uma vida

  • Ah! How the voice trembles...

  • I can't believe a song this good wasn't put on an album, released as a standalone single, used as a b-side, or even included in the Complete U2. I wonder what other gems they have in their vaults.

  • i love this song

  • This song is brilliant

  • I can tell in a few places where bono's voice is from now, but when is it from the 80's?

it's a bit hard for me to pin point

  • good song

  • i love this song. it's full of do much passion and meaning...

and bono's voice is sexy. it's like.... wow.

maybe i'm crazy but i think it is.)

  • and if the rain came and if the rain came

would it wash us all away on a wave of sorrow

  • Having much isn't a sin. It is a sin to deny others that which you demand for yourself.
