My brother, Bud Reneau, was the co-writer of this song, along with Doyle Marsh. It's always been one of my favorites. It was sung by many people and played by Mantivani.
@sunny56763 Sunny Thanks for that but as a big big Waylon Fan and i have heard both versions i prefer Waylons .... but i will tell you that Somebody did write to me and tell me Waylon himself hated his version and didn't wont it releasing and it was his record company that had to persuade him to do it...or something like that,
This song owns my soul..It never fails to break me down in tears evry time I hear it...Music like this...told to us from Waylons perspective..Makes this unbelievably sad but beautiful truth hurts what only my inner failures tell me is my alibi
FANTASTIC! This brings back so many happy memories. When I was young I didn't appreciate what I had until I threw it away. the only thing that I have left now is my memories. Nobody to blame other than myself.
@pigman45 ...We all have failed in most of our attemptS aT CIVILITY...OR..BECOMING WHAT OTHERS CALL .."NORMAL"..SOME OF US JUST NEVER GOT THE DRILL QUITE RIGHT..AND HENCE OUR FALL TO ..THIS..bE NICE TO YOU MY FRIEND..wE AIN'T NEARLY AS BAD AS THE SAY WE ARE
And ANOTHER masterpiece! Waylon is medicine for whatever ails his fans...LOL...I love his old "crooners" like this one and MacArthur Park...as well as everything he did since, till he went on to our Lord...God bless him...and God bless you, Eddie for these marvelous creations you share w/ all of us......................
This is the not issued version and a great example of what Waylon was talking about. RCA messing with his recording! Chet and Danny Davis added strings to this one in Mar 1969 and then released it as a single 1969, charted # 20. Released version is 16 seconds shorter and it didn't need the strings.
The other side is 'Delia's Gone' and Waylon wanted RCA to promote it to 'pop' radio. They didn't. It got country airplay and charted #37...srj
@SkidRowJim THANK YOU JIM FOR THE GREAT ADDED HISTORY OF THAT MASTERPIECE...I HAVE FOLLOWED WAYLON EVERY SINCE HE AND BUDDY HOLLY WERE PALS..I wonder..Do you have any thoughts about the other Texas rocker who was killed ..or perhaps murdered in 1966...Bobby Fuller?
No Brian your right there is so much that is missing, most of the singers coming into country these days wanna make pop records ....thx for the comment
I had to type in some lines from this song to find it, couldn't remember the name, just that it was Waylon. The first time I had this song it was on an 8-track tape that my dad made me when I was around 8 years old. Thank you for posting it. It is beautiful.
I've heard Waylon's and Bobby Vinton's versions of this song. Bobby might have had the hit recording of this song, but Waylon Jennings' version is the best in my opinion.
Whether it was the Nashville Sound days or the Outlaw Days, Waylon could forever more sing a song. Rest in Peace, Waylon Jennings. You left us all way too soon.
Great song from Waylon. I used to have it on a cassette and almost wore it out listening to this one song! Thanks for posting it!

When did Waylon write this song? I remember hearing Bobby Vinton's version in the 1960's when I was a young kid. Waylon's is much more poignant.
jimb50 1 year ago
Hi Jim the song was writen by Doyle Marsh & GeorgeReneau and Waylon first sang it on the 1970 album The Best of Waylon Jennings
