  • Only one man can do such a thing as that. One could spend a life time...patiently waiting for such a one to return. The memory of such a one lingers in the atmosphere and captivates the moments. It is the perpetual essence of one's soulmate. A man like that can never be replaced. He's the kind of a man that you meet up again with in your next life. This is a treasure.

  • Thanks for sharing, reminds me of my younger days...wow

  • absolutely pure class

  • There was some serious dipping in the basement lol!

  • i have always loved this song. always wished i had a woman who loves me the way her voice expresses her love. well now i do...took most of my life, but i found her.

  • I have loved this song since I was A little girl. Ms. Theola sings this song like it's coming from her heart and soul. God Bless Her!!!!

  • Evolution of music! You'd have to be really smart, & live a 1000 yrs, to understand language accent evolution. Watched POISON FIRE. CEO of SHELL OIL spoke to the protesters, with a Nigerian accent! We have ENGLAND English, American & Australian! This song was 1st THE LOVE OF MY GOD. Maybe by REV JAMES CLEAVLAND. Then THEOLA. Then the 1st Blue eyed Soul Sister, TIMI YURO, (THE LOVE OF A BOY).

  • thnx for that great song

  • Ruby Johnson gives this song a slow but not easy-going treatment. It's up on YT.

  • Great voice, great song. Her downfall poor PR, poor management. sounds to much like Legendary-Icon ETTA JAMES

  • a damn classic

  • Somewhere, there exists a live version of TG doing this song, and it's even better. She just goes wild at the end.

  • @unclealand Yeah, that version is by Venetta Fields, who toured with The Ike and Tina Turner Revue. It is here on YT, with only 44 plays so far; posted by xdarling7

  • love that song.

  • I remember hearing this when i was 12 and fell in love with her voice, I'm 40 now and it still gives me chills, amazing song.

  • One of THE MOST beautiful songs ever!! Thank you for this classic gem Theola!! I NEVER tire of hearing it and always find myself playing it over and over AND over again!!!

  • @carolyrrh OMG, I had the same reaction as you did when I heard this. It brought back my 1st real love as teens and slow dancing to this. It still makes me smile today.............

  • I remember hearing this on the Hal Jackson Sunday morning classics when I was 15 and was like wow! I'm 40 now and i'm still feeling Wow! Thank you for posting! :)

  • Miss you so much Aunt Thee.

  • Oh my gosh, I love this song. It is a true classic! I remember when I was a little girl my mom would play this song and many others. I knew then I wanted to be a soul singer. Eventhough I really didn't understand what the real meaning was behind the lyrics at such a young age. But the soul in soul singing touched my heart and my life from that point on.

  • gives me shivers, soooo soulful

  • I had never heard of this song or artist until i was going through some 45s I obtained from the flea market, mostly because i wasn't born then and well the oldies and classic r&b stations play the same 100 songs over and over.I'm really loving this song. Youtube is one of the few places to hear this song and songs like it anywhere unless you just happen to be a record collector like me.

  • niceee

  • This a classic song, I love to hear it anytime anyplace .. I `m playiing the hell out of it right now . Thank you Theola. peace .

  • This a classic song, I love to hear it anytime anyplace .. I `m playiing the hell out of it right now .. peace

  • Classic R&B stations should be embarrassed and ashamed for continuing to play the same 75-100 songs, when songs like this are out there just waiting to be relived in our memories. Thank you Theola.

  • WOW...amazing! And I just hear her the first time.

  • @BytomGirl Dear Luba, specially for you a song

  • @jazzforrum Thank you my friend!

  • I played this for my Auntie in Jersey, She loves this song. ...

  • I Love this song.. I'm from New York and I was in love with this italian girl.. she song this song to me when we would meet.. I forgot to say that this was an interracial affair and not santioned in the 1960's in New York..This song still has strong feelings in my heart... I'm still waiting for another girl to say these words to me....

  • @r16727 Isn't that what Jungle Fever by Spike Lee was about?

  • @billchew450 Actully, that movie was about NYC in the early 1990s, believe it or not.

  • the love of my woman

  • WOOOW MY MOTHER USE TO PLAY THIS SONG OVER AND OVER I LOVE YOUTUBE R.I.P MOMMY

  • @pk06511 god bless you and our moms they are probably playing cards or have bumped into one another in heaven!

  • @THRILLAKILLA187 thanks

  • @pk06511 ur welcome

  • this was my favorite song, back when, 1960/? what a voice,

  • My favorite song since i was 15 OMG Youtube finally has it!

  • Ms. Kilgore proves that the Angelic Choir is also arrayed with alto and countra-alto Muses! If not for a mid-60s Soul compilation LP album by legendary DJ Frankie Crocker, and then years later by Felix Henandez's "Rhythm Revue" radio programs, I and many "young people" of that period would have never heard of Miss Theola. but then again, i do remember my parents did have a 45-rpm record that I used to play also, amid literally hundreds of others.

  • Oh man this is friggin awesome! Corey I love you!!!!! MY MAN!!!!

  • When this song came on at a party everyone got up and grabbed someone and it was on!!!!!!! This Lady had such a powerful voice and the only two songs she made were just beautiful. It just brings back memories of growing up as a teenager!!

  • It was A song By A Guy And Girl Sining a song I Found A Love Oh What A Love 64 ; 65 this is the only song icant find out who sings it

  • Thank you for sharing this with us..love the song!!!

  • This song still gives me goose bumps when I hear it. Miss Kilgore was a great artist. Love this song. I still can't get over what great music we had.

  • I know her nephew. She was a beautician at the time of her death here in Los Angeles. Great song in the tradition of Ruth Brown, Etta James and Mittie Collier. RIP Ms. Kilgore

  • miss your sound theoal

  • A 1963 classic..R.I.P. Theola...we love you

  • @arizonaghost1

This was another one of my favorites when I was in the 6th grade

music was my thing as still is

  • WOW,..My last name is Kilgore too! Powerful singing.

  • Might be "I Know" by Barbara George

  • one of my FAVS...........she was discovered by Ed Townsend

they don't make them like this no more!

  • omg!!!

    i love it!!

  • It's so nice to be reconnected with this song...Thank you SO MUCH.

  • ...ANOTHER PURE CLASSIC...LAWD HEP THESE YOUNGINS'.....THIS IS MUSIC...YEP I HAVE THIS ON A 45...SOMEONE MENTIONED ERNIES RECORD SHOP....I ORDERED MY 45s C.O.D FROM THERE...HAD TO SHIP OUT OF STATE...BUT IT WAS WELL WORTH IT...STILL HAVE ER' ONE OF THEM...

  • FOR real!! Er' one? Those were the days

  • Classic joint right here

  • WOW!!! This is the version I was looking for... its my fav. one :) LOVE IT!!!!

  • I had heard many versions of this: Perlean Gray, Etta James, Bonnie Brammlett...this one pre-dates them all and made #3 on the r&b charts

  • i listened to theola when i was 15 yrs old out of wlac nashville tn ernies record mart. i didnt even know any blacks then--there were none in the small town i lived .i just knew this was my kind of music

  • Ed Townsends re-wrote the song. Theola was too shy to step foot in any direction without Ed's wishes. That's why people never heard of her. This song landed him a producing job with Septer Records, I should know, he brought me along as a song-writer co-producer. I wrote songs for The Shirelles in their version of The Mad,Mad, World Album by Mac Davis (the first and older M.D.) Yes, I've been around a long, long time. Thank God! Bless you all, Alvin Stewart ( The first Al Stewart )

  • Holy Moly!

I never thought I would hear this great song again!

    When Soul Was Soul!

This Song derived from a Spiritual, The Love of My God".

A great singer that White DJs on radio use to refer to as The First Blue Eyed Soul Sister (Tami Yuro) Had a tune Derived from from this one, called "The Love of A Boy!

    What memories! "Thanks"

  • This is the dynamic artist Ed Townsend produced for Septer Records! Ed wrote this song that belongs to Theola Kilgore, as no other female recording artist has made an effort to challenge her superb rendition! On her brief stay in New York, it was my job to keep her company, as she didn't care for big city life!

  • You are lucky!

    Are You musical?

The instant I heard Chubby Checker on radio singing The Twist, I said it wasn't Hank Ballard. Hank said he listened to the whole song, thinking it was himself.

This song is a (Direct Copy) of a Gospel song THE LOVE OF MY GOD!

I knew it in 1961, saw Theola on TV in the 80s,

    and heard her say it!

Timi Yuro The First Blue Eyed Soul Sister slightly changed the Tune.

But you could hear where it Came From,

    THE LOVE OF A BOY!

Theola basically Only "Changed" a few words

  • Yes, jor99912, I am and also a poet and stand up comic. "Better Late Than Never" is my Cd Album

now on market, and my comic Video is here on

U-Tube. I knew Hank Ballard and spent much free time with him in New York City. Met Chubby

there also! God Bless, thank you, Alvin Stewart

  • Lucky Man!

But by musical I didn't mean knowing music people!

Can you hear what I heard?

Distinguishing Chubby Checker from Hank Ballard

The moment Chubby said, COME ON BABY!

And understanding Ed Townsend may have gotten copyright credit, The tune was written actually by the Gospel Writer!

    Again, my "Ears would speculate

REV JAMES CLEVELAND. just a Guess!

And can you "Hear" the First Strumming of the Guitar" in the Vibrations tune "THE WATUSI" and know they were copying LETs Go LETs GO LETs GO

  • Jor99912, allow me to add that Hank Ballard was a great songwriter as well as a great soul singer!

His "The Twist" is among the all-time performing songs including sales! "Let's Go, Let's Go Let's, Go" was my favorite! Super party lines " House party way cross town. Put on yo pretty red dress. I'm outa here, friend!

  • This is stunning but I can't help preffering the Pearlean Gray and the Passengers version, one of my favourite songs, so emotional!

  • LOVE IT. Here is a song with a voice that matches it. What a great song to listen to on a cold day. Sugar for my coffee. She ACED it. THANK YOU. wow

  • Awesome! A classic! 1000%!

  • I have always loved this song. I grew up with her, Baby Washington and Mitty Collier

  • GREAT TUNE!!

  • You Really grew up with them?

Did you get any of their "Soul"?

  • Haven't heard this in years. Never forgot it. Thank you!

  • Never heard of her, but WOW,,, she's wonderful, great song..

  • Cool.

  • Oh man, I remember this one well. Out around the same time as Baby Washington's "That's How Heartaches Are Made," a singer somewhat comparable to Theola. There was so much great soul music in 1963. What a voice she had -- thanks so much for brightening up my evening with this song!

  • I love it!! I heard it all day yesterday! :)

  • Thanks for the great song! Great soul kinda sound.

  • is there anyway this song can be found on a cd?

  • It appears on an English release from 1994 called "Sweet Sound of Success", issued by Kent records. You could get it by mail order from Amazon, Play, etc probably.

  • It is also available from Amazon on:

The Heart of Rock 'N' Roll 1963

  • I remember this song, I alway thought it was Etta James, this sister can blow.

  • It's a shame that you and many others never heard of her- she was a elite talent.

  • I've never heard of her. She's a good singer and this is a good song. Thanks for the post
