a victorian would look at cerf's wife kicking up her heel for his kiss with a sense of scandal; we see it as the innocent sophistication of a bygone era.
@xXxXBleedPurpleXxXx actually at the beginning of the video, it is pointed out that while mrs. cerf is there on hand, it is also shown that they are both co-authors of a book they had written together.
Too bad women don't wear dresses anymore. No women with a big behind should ever wear pants and they especially should never bend over in pants to get something from the lower shelf in a grocery store. Cerfs wife is on the big side. Thank god she is not wearing pants.
@Indygoguy I agree. Women must wear dresses. They wear pants that are sooo loose that it looks like they are gangbangers from the ghettos. BTW Mrs Cerf is not on the big side. Not atleast compares to today's fatsos.
@Vitte4 Women of the era did so in the belief that it would provide a counter-balance. Kissing a hot hunk like Bennett Cerf can really knock a girl off her feet, as I can personally attest.

It never fails to fascinate -- and horrify -- me to hear women referred to as "creatures" in that time & place (see 6:00). Sounded like something from the Black Lagoon!
You actually think that they were less courteous to women back then than they are now based on this one facetious statement between Bennett and his wife?
Well I suggest that you remove or withdraw your previous reply because I believe it is an excessive mistake since I have never seen anything close to discourteous on this show, not to mention the times.
Bennet Cerf and his wife had two sons, both of whom became writers. His son Christopher was one of the founders of the National Lampoon. The two Cerf brothers were teenage and college (Harvard) friends with their neighbor Peter Gabel, son of Arlene Francis and Martin Gabel.
Thank you so much for adding the orginial What's My Line video's to youtube! I've resently been watching them on GSN and have really developed a fondness for them since I've missed them the first time around.
soulierinvestments: haha, thanks for posting the trivia about accidental prone Arlene. I was thinking "was that an EYE PATCH at the end there?!" poor thing, but she's still cute as a button like always :) omg, that comment you made about Bennett made me laugh even more than watching it haha..
Thanks for sharing this hilarious sequence from What's My Line? =)
Mrs Cerf was kind of cute :)

There were many bad things about the '50s but "What's My Line" certainly wasn't one of them.

After Bennett died (1971), Phyllis married Robert Wagner, the former NYC mayor in 1975. She passed in 2006 at age 90.

Ginger Rogers cousin Phyllis! It would've been cool if they had been on that show together. Bennet would've been surprised :)

Why do so many women of that era kick one leg up when they kiss a man? Phyllis Cerf does this w/ her husband at 7:05.

he was referring to his wife (husband/wife banter most likely), i don't think he meant it to be sexist in anyway..
just my opinion
BuFu62294 2 years ago 43
Of course it was not sexist per the standards of that time & place. Don't think he would *ever* say that today, in any context!

@marcolopolis55 No. That's not my point at all. We have simply found new ways to be less courteous today.

That was tons of fun!
I like Cerf a lot, and I just loved the way he inquired if one of them were married to him.
And Arlene looks quite handsome with that eye patch...although she must've been uncomfortable with the eye infection.

Thanx for posting this hilarious sequence.
1957. Accident prone Arlene Francis that year broke a foot and suffered an eye infection. This is the third of four times she appeared on WML patched.
Ustinov was both witty and terribly bright. I wish G-T had used him on the panel more often.
Kilgallen is a model of questioning technique, especially the way she used negatives to eliminate the least likely lively arts.
Oh Bennett dear: "one of these creatures" LOL Where he sleep that night?

WML at it's best. It takes one of the
regular panelist family members who has the
panelist twisting in the air, although they
don't realize it until they figure it out.
