Making the comment that okuri-ashi is non-existent in a kata where there isn't supposed to be any okuri-ashi is rather ill-advised. I realize proton made the comment several years ago, but it is clear that he was a newcomer to kendo as he was clearly unfamiliar with Seitei-gata. Since this was three years ago, I'll assume he knows better now.
Well. I suppose in real fight moves wouldn't be so perfect , smooth etc. But it surely helps when you master a lot of techniques and you can use them instinctionally. By the way i think it is the best way to calm down and rest a little - to swing a sword.
The Okuri-ashi is there. You just have to watch carefully. Hes not a noob, forced to do big sliding steps. Technically this man is doing almos perfect technique with smooth calm and soft touch. Look at his first cut. It actually cuts. Its so difficult to make a cut with such short cuttingarea. Superb!
Do you guys remember how Ueshiba wore a white belt up into his master years? He was saying that nobody is exempt from learning more. Our sensei are students themselves. That includes Ogura-sensei here. He does deserve respect for the years of hard work he put in and the students he has taught, but that doesn't mean he cannot improve anymore. I think it is good that the other commentators have something to add to the video besides just cop-up praise.
It's not so much the denying of his technique as pointing out any points of improvement, which has nothing to do with ego. In fact if your senseis practice the same art they would appreciate it if they have the mind of an infant and want to learn, because EVERYONE makes mistakes somewhere, somehow. So yeah...
I think it is stupid to comment on "what he does wrong", as this is only from the ego. I see several things he does that I have been told specificaly not to do. But if he where to teach me, I would follow his every move as well I as can. Thus keeping the mind of an infant, and the spirit of bushido. And then I would learn much more, than if I where to deny his technique. (sorry for any spelling error, englsih is not my primary language).
For Pipercub, yes it's somewhat presumptuous to be pointing out the faults in the forms, but if they're there they're there. As I said on another form, everyone practicing has some flaws. I know I'm nowhere near Ogura-sensei's level, but I know my sensei have their own individual problems also. If anyone comes here looking for an example of how to do the 全日本剣道連盟 forms, it's important that they have this information.
I think I disagreed with Proton earlier, but after watching it again, I have to concur on this one. I noticed it a bit the first time, but if you watch his feet it's very pronounced. Correct okuri-ashi would be to pivot the hips before placing the feet. It makes for a much more directed movement. It's hard to do at this speed, but nonetheless. Ogura-sensei looks like he's moving from his feet, not from his center in this form.

Ueshiba never recognized coloured sashes as indicative of ranking.
And he used obi of a variety of colours, including white.
If you believe belts to mean anything, you should stay away from posting.

Okuri-ashi, absolutely nonexistent. Not good for someone at his level. His timing isn't particularly smooth, either. Lots of openings.
