ya know, ive checked out about 10 videos on how to make a pleated skirt, but, just because she wasn't using the actually stuff, and was using normal words,i actually understand this.THANK YOU.lol
I think it is amazing how you can teach a newbie like me how to sew a pleated skirt through paper props! XD
I just have one quick question though - when attaching the waist band, do you insert the pleated part all the way to the top of the inside of the waistband? Or just part-way?
Going to do this for my Enma Ai :) I found a great vintage sailor shirt pattern and the shirt came out amaaaaaazing. I guess that was the hard part eh?
I love this video!! But when I got. To the sewing part I stopped because I hand sew not machine sew so do you need a machine to sew the skirt together or can you hand sew it? Which would work better? (thanks to this I can make my Miku cosplay thank you)
I had my grandma make mine and she made it differently(i told her to do it your way >:O!) and my pleats wont stay!! i iron and iron but i have thidk rough fabric! help please!
i found your sailor fuku tutuorial....it was great, but i needed to also find a pleated skirt one,,,,found this....yayyyy know i can work on lucky star cosplay! But does anyone know how long it should take to make these skirts and uniforms?
So i want to make a white pleated skirt but i'm unsure of what kind of fabric to use since no matter what kind of white fabric i look at it seems to be see through? Any suggestions :/
@tarieness Cotton or polyester cotton? I suggest you go to a bigger fabric store and feel the drape and opacity of the fabric yourself. Or get the store owner to recommend.
Thank you so much!!! Me and my friends are going to Otaku Recon in November for my Birthday and the costume i ordered was totally wrong! You TOTALLY save the day for me!!
@TheDementedpixi the pleats size are one thing, the fabric hidden underneath are another thing. Meaning to say, 1" might work if you give a lot of fabric allowance for the pleats underneath that are not seen. Why don't you try it with paper?
thanks!!!! it actually helped me more when u used paper instead of cloth. O.o" lol cute paper zipper!!!! this helps for school rumble's fuku, vocaloid's hatsune miku, and lucky star's fuku! :) im making those cosplays and i thought 'what a coincidink i ran into this vid!' i REALLY needed it! ^w^ if i didnt find this vid, i would have had a major cosplay failure! AoA, XD
You're really good for beginners!! I didnt' need quite as much explaning since I've been sewing for awhile, but I love watching your videos anyways! I think the paper diagrams help A LOT!! That was a very good idea :)
Thank you soooo much, Kaika! I had no idea pleated skirts were so easy. You've saved so many people so much money with this tutorial~really, thank you!!!
Question: I want to do one of those sexy school girl skirts that you know you wouldn't wear in public. Could I use everything here but make it shorter? My guess is yes. Thanks
@yulxlover4 Alot of people do the pleats and such first, but I personally find it easier to do the hem first. Often if you do the pleats first, it will be difficult to keep the hem at the bottom flat, which can result in crooked seams. Really, after you've done a few skirts different ways, you then decide which way you prefer. Hope that helps.
I LOVE YOU!!! xD it's just that i did a pleated skirt a while ago but actually it was not that easy :S so, your tutorial was really helpful :3 thank you very much!!! :)
I actually used to have a pleated skirt pattern, I think it's out of print now. I made it in high school. The instructions said to baste on the fold of the pleat, and then you iron and take out the stitches when the entire skirt is complete. This information may be helpful with certain fabrics. -shrug-

@xichigoXkunoichix I'm not sure if doing a pleated skirt with stretch band will work. Because the top of the pleats usually have to be sewed down and be forced to retain its pleats. Which in turn does not allow its width to be stretchable. hope u get it..
@elpheal Ah, well I have an old pleated skirt that's almost just like the one you made so if I need extra help I can take a look at it and take it apart if I really need to. But the design seems simple enough for me to handle. Well good thing I won't be making this outfit for a while so I didn't mess up trying to make it. >.<
@xichigoXkunoichix Use velcro starting halfway up from the bottom, up to the top with a button on the waist band. Its what I did and it worked just fine.

Question: I want to do one of those sexy school girl skirts that you know you wouldn't wear in public. Could I use everything here but make it shorter? My guess is yes. Thanks
SexyNole07 1 year ago
wouldnt it be better if i did the hems first and then ironed down the pleats second? right?
yulxlover4 1 year ago
@yulxlover4 Not really. Unless you are very sure you will get both sides of the hem at the very precise length.
1) Usually, we pleat the fabric first
2) then sew the side (to form a tube, with pleats )
3) then lastly, hem the entire skirt.
Doing the hems last ensure both sides of the fabric at the (2) sewed side are the same height.
elpheal 1 year ago
@yulxlover4 Alot of people do the pleats and such first, but I personally find it easier to do the hem first. Often if you do the pleats first, it will be difficult to keep the hem at the bottom flat, which can result in crooked seams. Do you have a tutorial on how to make the second skirt?
DroveThemInsane 1 year ago
Hi! Me and my friend want to make this but we dont quite get the measurements @_@
You say: (Length of skirt + hems) x (waist length x 2.5) fabric
For us that would be (19"+1") x (36"x2.5) =1800 (we added alot of extra inches on just in case -__-;;)
But that would make 1800 inches for the length? Isnt that a bit too long?
And for: 4” x (waist length +2”). Is that the width? We are very confused @_@
InnoTwin 1 year ago
@InnoTwin Oh noe, I just realised the mistake in my written instruction. It looks so misleading! Thanks for pointing it out, have changed it.
The cloth for the pleatse should actually have:
Width : (Length of skirt + hems)
Length: (waist length x 2.5)
-------------------------------------------
4” x (waist length +2”). = this is actually the cloth for the waist band ^^
elpheal 1 year ago
@elpheal Oh I see :D Thank you very much !
InnoTwin 1 year ago
@elpheal so for the waist band i we have 36" x 2.5 = 90" would that be the area of the fabric?
