I knew I didnt imagine it - i lived in Poole as a child. No one I know since I grew up can remember it so I thought I had dreamt it......... But it used to scare me something rotten so maybe I nightmared it!
I never thought id ever see this again in my life, the theme tune has stuck with me all of my life, great stuff coming home from school and watching this in front of the coal fire yes thats right a coal fire lol
Wow - I've waited 40 years to see this again! Thanks so much for posting. It's brought back some memories - some bad ones though as the witch used to scare me! The theme tune was great to hear after all this time - I still remember it clearly. Would love to see some more episodes.
I can remember watching this at my nan's house in Ipswich. I can rememember the theme tune to this day. I was so scared of that which. I only saw it in black and white in those days, so it looks a bit strange in colour. Great to find some footage of this after not seeing it for 40 years!
Just noticed that the end titles credit camera work done by Guido Paulussen. Coincidence?
Also superb english voice characterisation. The badger was reminiscent of Spike Milligan in the Goons and was that Ringo Starr voicing one character pre Thomas The Tank Engine days.
I am the only person i know who remembers this.INCLUDING MY MOM! At times have wondered if i had imagined the whole thing, then i would start singing the theme tune...
I see it was first released in Holland i 1967, i wonder when it was on tv here? I would have been 2 then.
43 years old, and along with everyone else could still sing this tune prior to finding this clip. Why did a crap looking wooden puppet of a witch scare us so? Wouldn't happen nowadays...
I remember this so clearly. the witch chasing paulus back to his tree house, i'm sure he lived there with his dad. It used to scare the life out of me. I'm nearly 44 , so must have been watching this when i was about 2 or 3 as my older brother had just started school and was home alone (with my mum of course) but no siblings. Still scared me now , what a wimp LOL
I too was convinced this was some alien implanted memory but I'm pretty damn sure me and my twin brother had 'Paulus the Gnome' wallpaper on our bedroom wall. (No bleeding carpet... don't think we were posh!)
yes, no wonder im scarred now mentaly i was shit scared of that witch! ithink we were subjected to cruelty by our parents for allowing us kids to wach this stuff haha hohoh!!!!
like everybody else here i was frightened to death of the witch when I was a kid but none of my mates ever heard of it. Ive got a mate who talks just like paulus. I wonder if you can get the theme as a download.
I used to cower under the cushion on the settee whenever she apperard. Scared crapless, this witch is evil personified, and the cackle... the hairs on the back of my neck are standing up just thinking about it. GREAT kids TV, not like this fluffy, very PC garbage my grandaughter has to watch nowadays.
OMG! I remember trying to convince my contempories that this evil show existed. That refrain "she's out to get you, out to get you" stuck in my head for years. What I saw of this show terrified me, even watching it now. Argh. 'Hoppity' was another one that scared the pants of me.
I am 44 and can remember it too. I think it was repeated and was shown at the same time as "Ace of Wands" and "Magpie". I remember the theme tune and have carried it around with me for years.
i am 41b and remember it - maybe it was rerun on different neworks? i remember it as i was terrified of the witch - i only have one friend a couple of years older - his name was paul and he was nicknamed paulus from this
I loved this... as did many other people it seems! Just one thing puzzles me a little, in some recent comments ( not comments that were made 2 years ago) it's just the recent ones... people have said they were 41 or 42 years old remember watching this? Well it was broadcast during 68/69. That's 40/41 years ago at least, so they must be older... i'm 46 and just about remember it!
I'm so pleased this is on here!!! I too thought I had dreamt this programme.... I was terrified by the witch.. At 41, really brings back memories.....
Hey - At last - I can prove to friends my memory of this was not down to hallucinatory drugs (Calpol!) as a kid! The "behind the sofa" or "peeking thru the bannisters on the stairs" was caused by the evil witch! But great to finally relive the memory!
this is weird!! i have a photographic memory, and at 43 years of age, i always knew that Paulus existed!! Do you know the amazing thing? As soon as the image flashed up just now, I was surprised it was in colour! Of course, i only had a black and white TV!! I even remember it being in black and white. Not one person i have ever asked, of the bloody many, remember it. It was 1968/69. i was 3 or 4. that witch scared me to death too.
I remember this very well but no one else I have ever spoken to does. The witch used to scare the hell out of me and I think my mum tried to stop me watching it because it scared me so much - even the theme tune with the warning for Paulus "she's out to get you, she's out to get you, she's out to get you beware!" It scared me to death!
Well ffs all these years and all i remembered was the name Paulus,i'm in my early forties and all these years i have been asking people of the same age if they remember Paulus and NO ONE did,i knew it was real and not some childhood nightmare....Thanks.
I was asking my parents if they remembered this puppet show on TV that I used to watch as a child..with a scary witch in it. I was only 2 or 3 when it aired. I couldn't remember the names of any characters, nor the name of the show (I remembered it had a G somewhere in the title - that must have been the gnome part lol) but I could describe some of the characters. They just looked at me blankly... Thanks so much for proving I am sane =)
Great, just great. Bring back this to Tv. If you remember this, then check out Sahra and Hopperty on Youtube, how many remember this Classic. We may not have had Computer Games in our days, but with Classics like this, did we really miss out, I think not.
Oh yes, I remember the theme too! Dubbed from the Dutch "Paulus de Boskabouter" and screened in the UK in 1967-68, apparently. Good to see a kids' TV lead enjoying his pipe in the intro - happy days!
isnt it spookey how weve all had simular expieriance of no one else knowing it was it only broardcast on a certain brainwave!! note the dialog was it an experiment in hypnosis to bring us all together in our fortys spookie!!!
great, i thought i was a little older than 3 or 4 im 44 now and figment of my imagination was agreat sentment as id meet no one yet that had seen it thanks

So many of us thought we were the only ones who could remember this programme. We were not alone! Loved the show myself but it (probably Eucalypta) did scare some kids. Amazing how the theme tune and its words have stuck in the memory.
My mum spent years claiming that this TV show was real!! We found it! She has had exactly the same experience as you. She still remembers the theme song- and I can sing it too!
you kindly sent me an email a while ago and I've only just realised I had an inbox on you tube! Then I found I could not actually reply to you because of your settings.. you said in your email it had an attachment for the Paulus the Little Gnome song..... but I can't see how I can use it, I am not sure if it's on there.. although I might be having a blonde day!
My mam used to watch this, she said the man who voiced Paulus is also the man who voices the old ad for the coastguard, anyone remember that one, his wife's name was Petunia.
I think it's recently been shown again with a bit of a makeover.
I haved looked for this for so long....but always ended up finding others I remembered cause I couldn't find it...me, my sister and two brothers all aged 3,4,6 &7 used to sing this in the car on day trips out..but have never come across ANYONE who knew what we were on about!! was looking for Tinger and Tucker the other day.. nothing on here though can anyone remember it, there was a presenter called Aunty Jean and Katie cuckaburrow, it was Australian?
oh THANKYOU SO MUCH FOR THIS, I USE TO WATCH IT WHEN I WAS A LITTLE GIRL AND WHEN THE WITCH CAMEON I WOULD HIDE BEHIND THE SOFA. WHEN I TELL PEOPLE I USE TO WATCH IT THEY SAY I AM MAKING IT UP AND CALL ME A LIAR, WELLWHO'S BLOODY LYING NOW. CAN'T WAIT TO SHOW THEM THIS , THANKS AGAIN, YOU ARE THE BEST.
I just had to watch this, another who was terrified by that witch! Great seeing the intro (it was still scary) brought back so many memories of a show so few seem to remember!
Thank you so much for putting this clip on. It's nice to know so many others remember Paulus too.I remember watching this when I was little. Brings back lots of good memories.
Oh my God, I watched this when I was about 2 or 3. One of my earliest memories is of the witch which I was convinced lived under my bed! I still, at 40 would rather be covered in a sheet in bed, you never know!!!!
At last I have proof! Whenever I talk to people about kids stuff and reminiscing and mention this they all look at me like I've just beemed down from planet Zog! I used to watch this when I was about eight and my younger cousin used to run out of the room screaming and crying at the opening credits when the witch appeared! Laughable nowaday's when you think of some of the stuff kids watch!
ditto everyone else's comments.i was terrified of the witch and just seeing her face now freaked me out!!!the tune is just how i remember it.i can vividly remember the witch chasing him through the forest. awesome footage.oh to be 4 again.
This is such a great site.....i have only ever met 2 ppl who remember this and 1 of them is my twin!!! we were begining to think we must of made it up, it takes us right back to being 6 again...........we are now 42 HA! HA! ENJOY IT !!!!!!
I thought I was the only one too who remembered this. It must be 1969/70 I have not seen it since then but remembered all the worlds. How strange is that? Thanks for sharing this clip. Marc
Thankyou thankyou thankyou, I thought that I was the only one who remembered this from the late 60s & early 70s. Innocent times, shame we have to grow up isn't it?
fantastic really scared me when i was a kid no one remembers it when i have talked about it well done i would love a copy and scare the grandaughter.lol.
Incredible!! You're a star - so many memories, and like many others, I can now confirm the show did exist and I wasn't mad lol! Funny how the characters all sound inspired by the Goons!
Now, can you help me track down a UK childrens show called "Toys In The Attic"? Gabriel Woolf appeared and narrated it - but like Paulus, nobody knows anything about it...except me of course!
I just cant believe I have found this video. I have spent a couple of years on here looking for footage of and information about Paulus. I agree, everyone thinks he is in my imagination and didn't watch it, but they dont know what they missed! Truly wonderful, thanks for posting it.
Fantastic! Gosh this takes me back. Oh happy days. I too thought this was a figment of my imagination cos nobody I know my age remembers it. Thanks sooooooooooo much for sharing.
I am eternally grateful to whoever posted this! I thought I was the only person to have ever seen this 35 years ago! I've had the theme music in my head driving me crazy for decades...of course it's not exactly what I turned it into in my mind. These days it was more hi-tech in my mind. The real thing sounds so .... old!
i dint't want to voice my feelings about the freaky horse thing with horns on its head and wobbly feet and legs regardless of their power LOL, quite scarey when i was 7 years old
Yes. This, Marine Boy and the opening titles of The Avengers and The Prisoner were the first things I remember seeing on telly.
Looking at this now The voices and the witch seem familiar. The power of a catchy theme tune - its the only thing I remembered about it across all those years.
I was looking for the theme tune for this, what a bonus it was to watch an episode. After 44 years I still remember the last bit where Paulus waves bye bye.
Brilliant! I also thought that this was a figment of my 42 year old imagination. The one character whose face I remember is Eucalypta, who terrified me as a child.
Wow - I never thought I'd ever see this again, or indeed hear the theme-tune which has stayed with me for the past 40 odd years!! I still think Eucalyptus was a pretty scary witch for kids!
Thanks for sharing this - it's brought back fond memories, and also reassures me that Paulus the Gnome wasn't just a figment of my imagination!
Oh fab! For years I've been going round with that witch's voice shouting ''Paulus!''
in my head and thinking I might need professional help because I had imagined it was from a telly programme..

Thankyou thankyou thankyou, I thought that I was the only one who remembered this from the late 60s & early 70s. Innocent times, shame we have to grow up isn't it?

Paulus smokes a pipe at the beginning, brilliant.
