I knew someone who was Haitian American because she was born in Haiti. She didn't consider hersef African American. Yeah, her ancestors at some point came from Africa, but if go you back in time long enough, so did mine (and everyone elses). And I'm ridiculous pale white. I'm Aussie, descended from a variety of cultures, but as for the English Irish convict heritage, i don't go around saying "i'm Irish Australian" or "English Australian" when it all happened 200 years ago. The only connection i have with Europe in that regard is my caucasian appearance, and obviously the customs that Australian culture adopts that are the same or similar.

In my opinion being African or American is just a nationality. Therefore I was born in America which is my nationality but my race is black which makes me a black american. But if an African was to come over to America by choice their race would still be black. But their original nationality is African which would make them an African American. What separates African Americans from Black Americans is whether or not they were born in Africa or America. It's simple as that.

Africa is not a country! Do I have roots somewhere in Africa? Yes, but I don't know from which part. I wish I did so I could connect to it more. Black people who live in America are in a unique situation where we do not have that connection to our ancestors' home land. I feel like if people want to identify themselves and African American to connect to that, that's fine. If not, I think you have the right to choose how you want to identify yourself. Most black Americans are mixed anyway.

African-American relates to the history of the 'Black/African' race of people brought to 'America' that adapted foreign cultures and belief systems and formed another culture and belief from them. When you say you are 'Black' - where did your true ancestors come from? Italy? Madagascar?, France? Asian people don't commonly say they are 'White' - they refer to their race's ancestry of origin. When we label or categorize ourselves, we accept the definitions those labels mean as well.

The Focal point of this issue is not "SLAVERY". It's about how the western society has DISTORTED the image of Africa. I knew someone who was Haitian American because she was born in Haiti. She didn't consider hersef African American. Yeah, her ancestors at some point came from Africa, but if go you back in time long enough, so did mine (and everyone elses). And I'm ridiculous pale white. The ancestors of this guy here probably came to America long before my German great great grandparents. I understand that he feels no more African than I feel German. Classifications, while sometimes necessary, are subjective.

I kind of get what you mean. I'm Aussie, descended from a variety of cultures, but as for the English Irish convict heritage, i don't go around saying "i'm Irish Australian" or "English Australian" when it all happened 200 years ago. The only connection i have with Europe in that regard is my caucasian appearance, and obviously the customs that Australian culture adopts that are the same or similar.

In my opinion being African or American is just a nationality. Therefore I was born in America which is my nationality but my race is black which makes me a black american. But if an African was to come over to America by choice their race would still be black. But their original nationality is African which would make them an African American. What separates African Americans from Black Americans is whether or not they were born in Africa or America. It's simple as that.

Africa is not a country! Do I have roots somewhere in Africa? Yes, but I don't know from which part. I wish I did so I could connect to it more. Black people who live in America are in a unique situation where we do not have that connection to our ancestors' home land. I feel like if people want to identify themselves and African American to connect to that, that's fine. If not, I think you have the right to choose how you want to identify yourself. African-American relates to the history of the 'Black/African' race of people brought to 'America' that adapted foreign cultures and belief systems and formed another culture and belief from them. When you say you are 'Black' - where did your true ancestors come from? Italy? Madagascar?, France? Asian people don't commonly say they are 'White' - they refer to their race's ancestry of origin. Im white. My entire family are from Croatia... I eat Croatian food. Speak the language and visit when I can. ALL my black friends and friends of friends have never spoken the language of their ancestors. Nor have they eaten the food. Heck! They dont even know where their roots reach. Nigeria? Congo? Mouritinha? Ivory Coast? Its impossible to say African American when you dont know. I know my roots so I realize how grounding and good this is on many levels. Wish my black brothers find theirs

@soccerskilj Iunderstand your LOGIC. However u, being white/Croation will NEVER fully understand this subject. U'd have to be black, born outside of Africa. I say that because when black people born outside of Africa step foot on the Afrian continent for the first time, we experience a spiritual rennaisance and soul connectio that we never realized was missing until we got there. U immediately understand the people, culture and perspective.

Please consider that most America whites dont know NOTHING about their heritage. Blacks were taken out of Africa unjustly. Most Whites came to America from Europe out of a promise of a new beginning and freedom. Whites in this country know very little to nothing about their own heritage (European most likely). I dont see it as a black issue at all. I know this cause I have seen it all my life. Most whites, like most all blacks, (black people more) are rootless. Its a human problem in America.

Going to the land of your families birth grounds and centers you. Its a total connection. I feel this way about Croatia 10000 percent. Malcolm X harped on Pan Africanism. For American Blacks to return to Africa to open a relationship with their homeland. He was a wise, intelligent man. He understood to conquer people you must cut out their sense of identity. My ex wife didnt know that she was Dutch, Irish and English. Most Americans are shut off from their culture... none more than black people

U made a good explanation but u cursed alot. If u want to make a serious speech, u should try to talk professionally. I liked the video alot though, I'm white but I am completely against when people discriminate Black Americans. I have alot of friends who have darker skin and I love being with them. As what you were talking about, its a real shame that alot of Black Americans can't carry their culture to The states. U wanna be freinds.

Look me in the eye and tell me that a first or second generation African living in America has the same cultural values and traditions as a person with African heritage whose ancestors settled in the land centuries ago? Your points are incorrect. 1. He doesnt have dreadlocks. 2.History books are written by the victors and are highly debatable. 3. I think this guy is great and honest and makes good points in all his videos. He doesnt need to be a beacon to anybody but himself and all of his responsibilities like his family and friends not to a race of people. face it... American blacks are in no way connected to African blacks on most every level (culture, language, perspective, experience etc...)

You aren't an "African American," and neither am I. I am Nigerian and you are a Black American. I think everyone is so afraid of being politically INCORRECT, they forget to be correct. If a Black British girls walked the streets, is she now an African American b/c she decided to visit the U.S.? And FYI, the only time I have ever seen a lion was here in NYC, at the Bx zoo. Africa isn't what you see on the "donate to hungry children" commercials.
